"The clouds methought would open and show riches
Ready to drop upon me, that when I waked,
I cried to dream again."― William Shakespeare, The Tempest.
The only time we hit 5th gear that day....dashing over the bay, chased by a storm.

This is an image from my project Aftermath.
Aftermath is a photography series I created during the pandemic, using a range of experimental techniques to explore the human condition in times of crisis. By employing methods such as film soup, developing color film with black-and-white chemistry, and innovative and alternative darkroom printing, I aimed to reflect the uncertainties and disruptions of the era. The work delves into themes of resilience, vulnerability, and the broader existential challenges posed by capitalism, offering a layered social commentary on our shared experiences during turbulent times.
We had a storm a couple weeks ago that brought some insane clouds.
HDR. 5 exposures. Tone mapped using Photomatix.
For Project 365, 2022 Edition: Day 315/365
Several weeks ago I gave up drinking a litre of green tea every day from this stainless steel mug.

Old scene, new camera - my first published photo taken with the Nikon D800E.
This shot represents the first serious application of my previously-mentioned new workflow. It took over 8 hours to process and edit this the way I wanted, but I’m hoping this time can come down for future shots, as I grow accustomed to some of the new techniques I’m taking advantage of.
Putting together the panorama was more difficult than I was expecting on this one. Automatic blending didn’t work; this one required manually blending the two photos correctly, and getting that seamless wasn’t a quick process.
Quite a bit of the time spent on this one had to do with mixing the color correctly. The original exposures were almost grayscale, with a blueish hue. Bringing out that latent reddish color took some effort to do in a way that looked natural, but was, in my opinion, the reason this photo works.
Perhaps the most time consuming part of this was processing the city itself. The camera managed to capture so much detail in that city, but it really had to be coaxed out - If I’d done the quick-and-dirty brightness/contrast adjustment masked over the city - as I would have done on my old camera - it would have looked really terrible and unnatural at full resolution. There is just too much detail here, and it required a much more nuanced editing job - and a vast increase in layers.
The result looks great at any size - from full screen Retina display on the new MacBook Pro, to a full poster-sized print.
This one was my first serious panorama taken with the D800E, and was generated from 2 parallel 5-exposure HDR files, processed in Photoshop and Photomatix.
