Paw Hole Tee Pees. Brown, textured cones of twisted sandstone. As awesome as they are, they are hard to shoot. It is difficult to find visual paths and position yourself in a way that makes for a meaningful composition. After probably more than 100 visits, and giving up a hope that there is a shot there, with the help of the clouds, the composition finally presented itself. I could use the golden spiral more often.

There is no real name for these but there what hold the canoes and they reminded me of Teepee, so I dump them canoe teepees, this is a Grant Village in Yellowstone national Park at the very end of winter right before everything got beautiful in summer, although even in winter Yellowstone stands it’s ground aesthetically speaking 5/17/17

The North and South Teepees are large, colorful domes east of Coyote Buttes. They rise up out of the plain in clusters about 250 x 350 yards in size.

Being outside the permit area, the Teepees can be explored freely, but it takes almost 4 miles each way from Wire Pass to reach them. I hiked from Steamboat Rock, which was about 2 miles directly west, but that road is very bad even for 4WD. Take your pick!

On my hike I walked about 9.5 miles total, seeing various points of interest between Steamboat Rock and the Teepees that are even lesser known.

Sky replacement was applied to this photo to add some clouds photographed the previous day.

April fools….. The #MacroMondays theme for 4/1 is April fools… silly, funny, punny. And I had a bit of a tough time figuring out how to do that in macro. Then I started thinking like the kids in my classes before I retired- being playful with language!! I think I’ll have three but I’ll need to stage the other two… I’ll put up the size verification in a bit.

I've seen other shots of this, but never an explanation... why a teepee, and what was this location at one time? I've read that the teepee was once a gas station, but the white building? I don't know.

I'm sure the teepee was a ploy to attract travellers along the Dixie Highway, but beyond that, it's just another roadside oddity that I wish I knew the complete history of.

I'd seen various locations given for this, but here's the exact location (which I updated on Roadside America too):

US-25, 2.5 miles south of Williamstown (or 9 miles north of Corinth), at intersection where KY Route 36 breaks off US-25 and heads east.

Now go see it for yourself. :-)

This large tee-pee over a picnic table is at the Dickens Spring in Dickens, TX. Was a wonderful night of shooting with some good friends; even got to see fire flies!

Clouds over Taos teepees. Our beautiful world, pass it on.

The teepee formations of the Coyote Buttes are fascinating to explore. We had a great time with our Action Photogs out here capturing shots with dramatic clouds and stormy conditions. Here's a new word for you - Virga. It is rain that drys up before it even hits the ground. It's very common in dry desert climates.

Shot outside of Moab, Utah using a Polaroid 230 and expired (4-2006) Polaroid 669 film.

the natives have all gone ... for sale

my friend's other (backyard) Teepee collapsed in a windstorm, so she had a new one built

Captured on the Moment 18mm wide angle lens.

Following my recent eye injury I'm in no position to be finding and editing out dust spots at the moment, or adjusting DSLR images in general, so I'll be focusing on iPhone images (or previously edited DSLR images) for a little while.

As i crept up on this tribe i found myself unusually nervous, not every camp is hospitable -- some ceremonies aren't open to the public and are very sacred. With a trickle of sweat running down from the brim of my hat it wasn't long before i was sussed out, there's not much you can sneak past a native, especially if you are downwind :)

Petrified Forest National Park

Hidden deep in a corner of a large field in Madison. Alabama. It was probably constructed by some children as a hangout or a camp. I spent many summer days in my youth building huts, cabins, and all sorts of shelters with similar age friends around the neighborhood.

What:

Barrett's Lumber Mill

A few logs in the ice and snow waiting to go to the mill?

Where:

Beaver Bank, Nova Scotia, Canada

About:

I pass this lumber mill everytime I go out to visit my buddy in Beaverbank. Mmmm...beaver ;-)

I keep meaning to stop and take a few pictures of this place. It just looks cool to my and there in a big pool of water in front of this...um...er...wtf is this thing anyway? Some kind of smoke stack I guess? (Edit: this is a "teepee" burner, used to burn the waste from the mill; thanks snohomish). Anyway the pool of water always looks cool and reflects that "thing" most of the time. Well last night on my way home to get ready to meets up with friends for sushi... Mmm,...raw fish :-) ...damn! I lost my train of thought! Oh yeah! On my way home the sunset was just too amazing that I just had to finally stop and get some shots. Obviously that pool was frozen solid as it's been almost -20C here which is about -55F ;-) for you Yanks! So anyway I just concentrated on the sunset and light on the snow and logs.

OMG, I sure do babble! Well I hope you like it. BTW, it looked much more vibrant before I uploaded it. The snow is much duller viewer on the web browser (I use Firefox & Flock) and this is the first time I really noticed it. I will have to check my settings I guess? If you have any criticisms just keep them to yourself! LOL

Tech crap:

I shot this in the typical 3 frame bracketed (-2ev_0_+2ev) in Aperture priority and dialed in +2ev ExpComp to compensate for shooting into the light.. It was getting quite dark so I used 30seconds as my baseline and the 2 more shots at +2/-2ev.

Merged the raw files in Photomatix. Layered in the -2ev sky in CS4. Did the usual layer of curves. Lowered the saturation (yeah, right! :-). Resized, sharpened etc... and it looked ok until i saw it on the browser, now it seems dull or flat to me. At least compared to the PSD file. I meant have another look and replace it although I don't like doing that.

Touch me and make my wood bigger baby!

(Don't even think about it Artie! :-)
