Teepees on Taos Mesa

My friends gave me a choice. Which would you pick? I decided on the teepee that way I wouldn't wake up my friends when I snuck off kayaking at odd hours. In return for their gracious hospitality for a few days I made them a print to hang on their wall, they really appreciated it. Love this gem of a lake, the next night I watched elk swimming across from my kayak....a real breathe easy place. When the mist finally gave way you could see the whole mountain...:-) A far cry from when I first woke up I couldn't see anything. Taken from my yak.

From the archives: A Western Meadowlark takes a break from its song atop a Teepee ring.

While drift boat flyfishing the Madison River in Southwestern Montana in 2015, I shared with our guide Tim, how I collected Indian artifacts since my childhood. He smiled and said he had something to show us. A few miles downriver he pulled into the bank and took us trekking up through the tall grasses of the great plains. It was like being back in time as there were no chem trails in the sky nor trace of human existence to be found.

After a short walk we came upon a few large stones. Tim told us to step up on them and look. Due to the height of the grass, the pattern of the rocks could not be seen just standing on the ground. I was amazed to have a several large circles of rocks immediately come into view.

Tim went on to explained that the Plains Indians were very mobile and the teepee was merely large long poles and animal skins. Each section of hide between the posts had a large flap that extended away from the structure across the ground. The Indians would roll the large rocks over the flaps to hold the teepee in place.

What a gift it was to stand and view 360 degrees of absolute heaven on earth around the camp that was used by generations of Indians as they loved their children, mourned their dead, rejoiced in success and worried about failure and the future. All the while following the vast herds of buffalo for survival.

Like a bonus gift, this meadowlark jumped up on one of the rings and began singing.

Something different for fence Friday! Nod to another time.

We have so much rain over the past month.Obviously so much wood has washed down the rivers. Maybe making beach structures is a thing.

let's have a powwow.

In search of a good photo location for Edmaier's Secret not far from Buckskin Gulch, I climbed this rocky mountain (named: Teepee Dome) and was very surprised at what you can see from up there: Coyote Buttes North with the Wave and Top Rock as well as a complete overview of Edmaier's Secret were the highlights (see first comment):

Some folks made a tepee out of driftwood and left it on the beach at Point Betsie.

Originally started as a gas station in the 1940's, when Route 66 was widened, the gas pumps were removed and the teepee was added in 1959. Shortly thereafter the neon was installed. The store continues to be a popular place to purchase Tucumcari Route 66 souvenirs. I got a cup and a magnet there.

Happy Truck Thursday!

I think this one lends itself to a texture, also.

Just as Second Life is a home to so many people from all walks of life, Indie Teepee aims to be the roof under which these same people may discover, enjoy and appreciate the diversity and creativity that could only previously be experienced in the real world.

Indie Teepee brings people together through their love of song and art – breaking down barriers and providing a haven for music genres like indie, alternative, rock, electronic dance music and hiphop. This year, we take it a step further to include into our home, live music performances, theatre acts, machinimas, original mesh designs, photography and a creative forum.

The success of our inaugural event in 2015 has inspired us to make sure that 2016’s Indie Teepee is a far more welcoming and cosier dwelling for everyone. In this home, there are no strangers, just friends you haven’t met yet.

Detail of one of the huts in Teepee-land.

Teepee-land is a cultural project, an urban utopia emphasising sustainable urban development, collaboration between artists across Europe and alternative forms of nomadism. It's a community of about 15 people who live here in self-built huts on the banks of the river Spree in former east Berlin. Alcohol and drugs are not tolerated. Residents cook together and most stuff is shared.

The sign at the entrance reads “Love loves freedom".

The young hawk was chasing after squirrels. His timing's still off, but he's learning fast. His mom was a proficient killer of squirrels in her first autumn.

Somehow, I think I like this one in B&W, with a texture best.

A wood waste burner, also known as a teepee burner in the United States and a beehive burner in Canada, is a conical steel structure used to dispose of waste wood in logging yards and sawdust from sawmills by incineration. The burners are prohibited from operation in Oregon due to air pollution. The majority of wood waste is now recycled and used as a component in various forest products, such as pellet fuel, particle board and mulch. This one is located along OR 126 near Mapleton, Oregon.

A river was the lowest I remember it being and the muddy surface on both side was not very slippery so I found a place to cross and did some exploring and found this pair of Hoodoo Teepees. I have not seen any other photos of these formations. Has anybody else ever seen them or photos of them?

Miniature reed and algae-mat structures created by a flood.

Flooding raised the water levels, raising floating algae mats above the plants. When the water eventually receded, it left the mats draped over the stalks and the weight of the wet mats bent them. Eventually, the algae mats dried and shrank, pulling the stalks still closer together, resulting in the "teepees".
