Any contribution to technology, no matter how big or small, helps set the course for technological advancement.

A horribly pretentious collage.

The title, of course, comes from Harold Wilson. What has it got to do with an overgrown compound, you ask? Well, the technological revolution landed at Northampton Transport in 1996. Six gas buses (CNG powered) came, amid considerable rhubarb and razzmataz. Their spectacular fall from grace is well documented. By 2005, all were withdrawn. This is all that remains of the project, and that will soon be gone.

Large scientific facilities and instruments often possess their own aesthetics. These aesthetics are solely driven by the limits of technology and engineering constraints.

This image shows the multi-unit spectroscopic explorer (MUSE), one of the many astronomic instruments that are installed at the Very Large Telescope (VLT) of the European Southern Observatory in Chile. It is an optical sensor, that allows the astronomers to observe mysterious objects such as dense globular clusters and super-massive black holes in the center of galaxies. The open telescope dome and the secondary mirror with its support structure can be seen in the background, providing context for the instrument.

Its development had to meet ambitious demands while staying within budget and size limits. Some of the design choices that were made to achieve this can be seen in the construction. The repetitive elements are 24 spectrograph units, which were used to reduce construction costs and maintenance efforts.

Broomball season is in full swing! Students are enjoying one of their favorite Tech traditions.

After upgrading my tripod and ballhead, I needed a new panoramic setup that was Arca-style plate/clamp compatible. After quite a bit of research, I was able to piece one together pretty reasonably.

The pano above shows the main entryway for Tennessee Tech's Roaden University Center (UC for short). I've always loved that spiral staircase.

Copper skull from the Precambrian of Michigan, USA. (public display, Seaman Mineral Museum, Michigan Technological University, Houghton, Michigan, USA)

A mineral is a naturally-occurring, solid, inorganic, crystalline substance having a fairly definite chemical composition and having fairly definite physical properties. At its simplest, a mineral is a naturally-occurring solid chemical. Currently, there are about 6000 named and described minerals - about 200 of them are common and about 20 of them are very common. Mineral classification is based on anion chemistry. Major categories of minerals are: elements, sulfides, oxides, halides, carbonates, sulfates, phosphates, and silicates.

Elements are fundamental substances of matter - matter that is composed of the same types of atoms. At present, 118 elements are known (four of them are still unnamed). Of these, 98 occur naturally on Earth (hydrogen to californium). Most of these occur in rocks & minerals, although some occur in very small, trace amounts. Only some elements occur in their native elemental state as minerals.

To find a native element in nature, it must be relatively non-reactive and there must be some concentration process. Metallic, semimetallic (metalloid), and nonmetallic elements are known in their native state as minerals.

Copper is the only metallic element that has a "reddish" color - it’s actually a metallic orange color. Most metallic elements, apart from gold & copper, are silvery-gray colored. Copper tends to form sharp-edged, irregular, twisted masses of moderately high density. It is moderately soft, but is extremely difficult to break. It has no cleavage and has a distinctive hackly fracture.

The copper skull shown above comes from northern Michigan's Portage Lake Volcanic Series, an extremely thick, Precambrian-aged, flood-basalt deposit that fills up an ancient continental rift valley. This rift valley, analogous to the present-day East African Rift Valley, extends from Kansas to Minnesota to the Lake Superior area to southern Michigan. Unlike many flood basalts (e.g., Deccan Traps, Siberian Traps, Columbia River), the Portage Lake only filled up the rift valley. The unit is exposed throughout Michigan’s Keweenaw Peninsula, in the vicinity of the towns of Houghton & Hancock.

The Portage Lake succession thickens northward through the Keweenaw, up to >5.5 km worth of section in places. The dominant rock type is basalt - vesicular basalts, for the most part. Most of the original vesicles (gas bubbles) have since been filled up with a wide variety of different minerals. A vesicular basalt that has had its vesicles filled up with minerals is called an amygdaloidal basalt (try saying that five times quickly). Keweenaw amygdaloidal basalts have long had significant economic importance because native copper (Cu) is one of the more common vesicle-filling and fracture-filling minerals.

Interbeds of conglomerate also occur in the Portage Lake Volcanic Series. During times of volcanic quiescence, erosion of the uplands adjacent to ancient rift valley produced an abundance of coarse-grained, poorly sorted gravel, dominated by volcanic clasts. These sediments were deposited in the rift valley between basaltic lava flows. In these conglomerate beds, native copper occurs as intergranular cement and as coatings around large clasts (pebbles and cobbles). With the clast removed, the copper coatings form shells, or "copper skulls". Northern Michigan is apparently the only place on Earth where skull copper occurs.

Copper mineralization occurred during the late Mesoproterozoic, at 1.05 to 1.06 billion years ago. The Portage Lake host rocks (basalts and interbedded conglomerates) are 1.093 to 1.097 billion years old.

Everyone knows! At present, the melt-blown cloth and mask industries have entered a critical period of industrial adjustment and technological upgrading, and high quality is the mainstream of the market.

Public information shows that melt-blown material has 25g and 50g, filtration efficiency has 90%, 95%, and 99%, and other several levels are usually referred to like 90%, 95%, and 99%, respectively on behalf of 90%, 95%, and 99%, of the non-oily particles. Current EU standards require melt-blown at 95L/min flow conditions under the test, the filtration efficiency should be more than 94%. From this point of view, PFE less than 90% of melt-blown cloth has not met the export standard requirements of masks.

So, how to save the low-filter melt-blown fabric?

Qingzi Nano "nanofiber melt-blown machine", through the processing of the filtering effect 90% melt-blown cloth, the final filtering effect (PFE) can reach 95~99%!

When the filter effect is less than 90%, the melt-blown cloth can increase the profit many times after the equipment processing reaches level 95 and 99.

Qingzi Nano has designed three solutions for the air filtration industry combined with our nanofiber mass production equipment.

1. Nano antibacterial membrane, antibacterial efficiency up to 99.99%. It can be added to the vehicle-mounted filter screen, filter element, air filter, and HEPA to filter bacteria in the air.

2. Add a layer of nanofiber film to melt-blown cloth, hot air cotton, etc. to improve the filtration efficiency, which can reach PFE 95-99% stably, the filtration efficiency will not reduce, and the service life will be longer.

3. Spin a layer of nanofilm on a spunbonded cloth to make a pure nanofilm with high filtration efficiency and low wind resistance. Monolayer nanofilm PFE 65-85% with the resistance of 17-25 Pa. It can be used in a window screen, air purifier, and other products.

Air Filtration

Although the traditional fiber air filtration materials can effectively intercept the micron solid particles, the filtration efficiency of the submicron solid particles is low. Nanofibers have the characteristics of small diameter and large specific surface area, which can further enhance the interception of suspended particles. By electrospinning technology system of the preparation of nanometer fiber membrane with good fiber uniformity, controllable pore size distribution, the characteristics of the structure can be adjusted, according to the actual use of the environment demand to choose different polymer materials, which could be prepared for the different particle size of solid particles of high-efficiency low resistance air filtration material, do the special environment of application scenarios have larger development prospects.

High-Temperature Filtration

PM2.5 Masks

High-Efficiency Cartridge Filter

Haze Screening

HEPA Filter

Air Conditioning Filter

Application of Nanofiber Membrane Masks

The production principle of the nanofiber air filter is different from that of melt-blown cloth. Contrast melt-blown fabric with air drawing process, nanofiber air filter material using electrostatic wiredrawing, the fiber is finer, and the new product upstream materials will not be limited to polypropylene, as long as it is able to dissolve in the solvent of polymers, including polyurethane, eps olefins, polystyrene, etc. It can be used for textile, much lower production cost than traditional melt-blown cloth. Nanofiber membrane adopts advanced electrospinning nanofiber technology, and the pore diameter of the nanofiber membrane is about 100~500nm. Compared with the fiber prepared by the melt-blown process, the pore diameter is smaller and the antibacterial property is better. It effectively blocks filtering dust and PM2.5 particles with filtration efficiency up to 99.99% and effectively inhibits more than 650 bacterial viruses such as the influenza virus, MERS, SARS, and bacteria.

A. Nanofiber membrane replaces melt-blown cloth as the core filter layer of masks, with the following advantages:

1) The resistance, BFE, PFE, etc. are superior to the melt-blown cloth.

2) Instead of relying on electrostatic adsorption, physical interception is adopted, relying on the principle of physical pore filtration, that is, finer 'mesh' is used to achieve filtration effect. No static electret treatment is required, longer protection effect, no static disappears.

B. Nanofiber film melt-blown composite

1) Melt-blown cloth composite nanofiber processing, easily on 95+, stable 95+, to solve the export problem, easily oily, salt test!

2) Through equipment processing up to 95, 99, solve the problem of low filtration efficiency melt-blown inventory backlog, effective use of existing resources, and can increase the profit of many times! (At present, the price of low-quality melt-blown cloth on the market falls to about 1,465 USD. After processing the melt-blown cloth with the Qingzi Nano production line, it can be sold directly according to 95+ and 99+ melt-blown cloth, and there is no static electricity to disappear. Customers do not need to worry about the product being randomly inspected and disqualified after export.)

3) The processing cost of one ton of melt-blown cloth is the only US $879~ US $1465!

《感動的公平與正義》

TianLiang Maa, alternative spelling: Tianliang Ma, also known as Theophilus Raynsford Mann; Ma, Tianliang; Chinese: 馬天亮; 马天亮.

SUMMARY

TianLiang Maa is a naturalist, occultist, Buddhist and Taoist. In 1982, Maa developed a technique for abstract photography, applied “Rayonism” into photographic works. Maa staged 32 individual, extraordinary exhibitions around Taiwan, who was the first exhibitor around Formosa. Maa’s works is the beginning of modernization in the modern abstract arts in the world. At the University of Oxford, Maa’s attractive topic was “A View of Architectural History: Towns through the Ages from Winchester through London Arrived at Oxford in England”; also an author at the University of California, Berkeley and the University of Michigan in the United States; an alumnus from Christ Church College at the University of Oxford in England, the University of Glamorgan in Wales, and National Taiwan University in Taipei on Taiwan. Maa’s works have been quoted by the scholars many times, making Maa one of the highly cited technological, artistic, and managing public administrators in the academia. Maa was listed in “Taiwan Who’s Who In Business” © 1984, 1987, 1989 Harvard Management Service.

Early Life and Record of Genealogy

TianLiang Maa possesses both Taiwanese and German surnames from birth. Usually, whenever anyone asks Maa about where he comes from, he would reply “Formosa” as he grew up and was educated in the Far East and lives in Taiwanese and Japanese lifestyles. Moreover, he often teaches and educates younger generations based on the methods of the Far Eastern teaching he experienced when he was young, though he does not oppose the Western ways of teaching and thinking. Maa takes great pride in his roots, which go back 150 years (since 1864); Maa’s ancestry originates and creates generations, and prepares younger generations to succeed their personality and ethical standards and integrity.

Education in Taiwan and a Brief of Latest Generation of History in Taiwan / Formosa

In 1980, Maa obtained his postgraduate certificate from the Graduate Institute of Electrical Engineering of National Taiwan University in Taipei; successfully completed another graduate studies in Information dBase III Plus and Taiwanese Traditional Chinese Mandarin Information System at National Sun Yat-Sen University in Kaohsiung in 1989.

In history, the Portuguese explorers discovered and called the island (Taiwan), “Formosa” (meaning “Beautiful Island”) in 1590. They are non-Chinese people; it was long a Chinese and Japanese pirate base. Fighting continued, between its original inhabitants of Taiwanese and the Chinese settlers, into the 19th century. In 1894-95 first Sino-Japanese War that ended in Manchus of the Qing (Ching) dynasty defeat, the late Manchu Qing Government forced to cede Formosa to Japan. This result was made by the Treaty of Shomonoseki in 1895 and remained under Japanese control until the end of the Second World War. Early on, Taiwan was conquered by the Qing in 1683 and for the first time became part of older China dynasty. However, today, the home country of Maa’s origin has around 165 institutions (93 universities) of higher education, which now has one of the best-educated populations in Asia. Among the major public (state) ones are the National Taiwan University (NTU) at Taipei, and National Sun Yat-Sen University (NSYSU) at Kaohsiung. NSYSU is also called National Chun-Shan University; according to Times Higher Education 2010-2011, NSYSU ranks as the 3rd university in Taiwan, 21st in Asia, and 163rd worldwide. National Taiwan University is ranked 51 to 60 ranks on Times Higher Education World University Rankings - Top Universities by Reputation 2013, the United Kingdom (see www.timeshighereducation.co.uk/world-university-rankings/...); King's College London (KCL) (21st in the world and 6th in Europe in the 2010, QS World University Rankings), the University of London, and University of Southern California (is one of the world's leading private research universities, located in the heart of Los Angeles), afterward.

Backing to Maa’s early school-time of Taiwan Provincial Kaohsiung Industrial Senior High School (Kaohsiung Municipal Kaohsiung Industrial High school), the professional technical education, which is equivalent to Advanced Level General Certificate of Education, commonly referred to as an A-level in the United Kingdom; China Electronic Engineering College, the distance learning programme, which is in equivalence as UK’s Diploma of Higher Education / Undergraduate Diploma (as an Associate Degree in the United States). An additional, his middle education was taught by the Kaohsiung Municipal Chihjh (Ci Sian) Junior High School; and Kaohsiung Municipal San Min Elementary School was his first school in Taiwan.

Early Career

In 1989, Maa instituted Maa’s Office of Electrical Engineer, he settled himself in electrical technology and industries as a chief engineer in his early years. He put his professional and precise knowledge to good account in business management. A formal business management with business relationship established to provide for regular services, dealings, and other commercial transactions and deed. He had many customers having a business and credit relationship with his firm then he was a successful engineer.

Study Abroad and Immigration into the United Kingdom

In 1998, Maa studied abroad when he arrived in Great Britain; he studied at School of Built Environment, the University of Glamorgan (Prifysgol Morgannwg) in Merthyr Tydfil, Pontypridd, Wales for a master of science in real estate appraisal. Until the summer of 2000, Maa completed an academic course on “Towns through the Ages” from Christ Church College at the University of Oxford (is ranked the 2nd place worldwide on The Times Higher Education, World University Rankings 2012-2013

www.timeshighereducation.co.uk/world-university-rankings/...) in England. Afterward, Maa immigrated into the United Kingdom in the early year of 2004.

PHILOSOPHICAL VIEWS

Maa is a naturalist; he trusts spiritual naturalism and naturalistic spirituality, which teaches that “the unknown” created this wonderful world. “The unknown” arranged the nature with its law so that everything in nature is kept balanced and in order. However, human beings failed to control themselves, deliberately went against the law of nature, and resulted in disasters, which we deserved. He also is an occultist, a Taoist, and a Buddhist; but in Britain, he frequently goes to Christian and Catholic churches, where he makes friends with pastors and fathers as well as churchgoers. In his mind, he recognizes “Belief is truth held in the mind; faith is a fire in the heart”. He is always a freethinker, does not accept traditional, social, and religious teaching, but based on his ideas: a thought or conception that potentially and actually exists in his mind as a product of mental activity - his opinion, conviction, and principle. If people have not come across eastern classics and philosophy, we are afraid that people would never understand TianLiang Maa. People cannot judge an eastern philosopher based on western ways of thinking. He studies I Ching discovering eastern classics of ancient origin consisting of 64 interrelated hexagrams along with commentaries. The hexagrams embody Taoist philosophy by describing all nature and human endeavour in terms of the interaction of yin and yang, and the classics may be consulted as an oracle.

Back in the 1990s when Maa just arrived at England, he had been offered places to do Ph.D. and LL.M. degrees (degree in Law and Politics of the European Union) by several western professors in the Great Britain. He has met all the requirements for postgraduate admissions to study at UK’s universities.

During his time at Oxford, he learnt a lot of British culture and folk-custom while carrying out research with many British and Western professors, experts, and archaeologists. This proves that Maa understands various aspects in British society, culture, and lifestyles. Of course, he does not fully understand about the perspectives of thinking of a typical British. For example, what would be the most valuable in life for a British person? What would a British want to gain from life? What is the goal in life for a British? Is it fortune or a lover? Alternatively, perhaps honour? On the other hand, maybe being able to travel around the world and see the world?

FAIRNESS and JUSTICE

As TianLiang Maa’s (馬天亮) saying are:

“Touching Fairness and Justice”

Feel good about themselves, but do not know the sufferings of the people...

Who can get easy life like them?

What is profile of modern society?

What type and style is truly solemn for this society identify?

Where “the characterization” is? Who can see? Did you see it?

Jurisprudence and Political Philosophy and Perspectives

Maa ever studied judicial review and governmental action, the impact of law and legal techniques, constitutional mechanisms for the protection of basic rights, and ensuring the integrity of commercial activity, the impact of law and legal techniques on government, policymaking, and administration, as well as the creation of markets. He tries to understand these critical trends in the political development of modern state. Maa will combine both theoretical and empirical approaches, and the conditions for democratic transition and the nature of state development in the ‘post-industrial’ era of globalisation and economic integration.

According as Maa’s legal experiences, he comprehend that “the knowledge of the law is like a deep well, out of which each man draught according to the strength of his understanding”, and, law and arbitrary power are in eternal enmity. He is also sure law and institutions are constantly tending to gravitate like clocks; they must be occasionally cleansed, and wound up, and set to true time.

The government issues a decree - an authoritative order having the force of law, which charged with putting into effect a country's laws and the administering of its functions. Any of the officials promulgate a law or put into practice relating to the government charged with the execution and administration of the nation's laws then they announce and carry out the creation of any order or new policy that will be responsible for the people.

Maa had knowledge in connexion with construction law; he also understands architectural arts, and as well learnt the forms by combining materials and parts include as an integral part concerning modern construct. I ever built urban buildings and rural architecture in different styles under new housing and building projects by the governmental administration and construction corporations.

Right now, Maa studies the problems caused by ethnic disputes and human armed conflicts in the modern society resulted code of mixed civil and criminal procedure. He wishes an agreement or a treaty to end human hostilities - the absence of war and other hostilities around the world. The interrelation and arrangement of freedom from quarrels and disagreement become harmonious relations living in peace with each other. Actually, erect peace in more friendly ways of making friendships for modern human society is comfortable in my ideal. It is like building monolithic architecture: houses and buildings for the people. Maa would like to do “something beautiful for `the unknown`”.

In the ethnic disagreement and armed conflicts as concerning the poor people and children notwithstanding they live through a bad environment on any of poor or crowded village or town in a particular manner - lived frugally. However, after years of industrialisation as a more educated population, becomes more aware of global plenum, continuing to be alive. Environmental groups are increasing and lobbing government will legislate to stop bad environmental and social practices. The establishments of human rights’ wide and untiring efforts will be alleviated people’s suffering. And as well the poor people shall meet and debate sustainable development and for a concerted government led action towards sustainability is an example that the younger generation are concerned for the future. It shall be making the younger easier for their life and make better on their lives, and help them to build a better future.

In present world, Maa really knows the full meanings of “Fundamental Human Rights and Equal Opportunities for the People”. He thinks ethics is the moral code governing the daily conduct of the individual toward those about him / her. It represents those rules or principles by which men and women live and work in a spirit of mutual confidence and service. Without going into the question of how an ethical code was formulated or why anybody should obey it, we can look at the matter in a common-sense fashion with reference to its influence upon our legal affairs. In brief, from the law point of view, a reputable ethical code embodies the qualities of accuracy, dependability, fair play, sound judgement, and service. It is based upon honesty.

No person can have an ethical code that concerns him / her alone. Living in society, as he / she must, a person encounters others whose rights must be respected as well as his / her own. An honest regard for the rights of others is an essential element of any decent code of ethics, and one that anyone must observe if anybody intends to follow that code. After all, ethics is not something apart from human beings. Indeed, there is no such thing apart from our actions and us. It is the duty, therefore, of every man and woman in legal affairs to see that his daily associations with others are truly in conformity with the plain meaning of the Ten Commandments: “Thou shalt not barratry, thou shalt not bear false witness, thou shalt not receive illegal fee and the rest”.

The knowledge Maa has, in connection with legal affairs, was usually come from his precious experiences of his past over ten year’s law and political careers. In an interval regarded as a distinct period of 1980s, he studied mixed civil and crime, and the code of mixed civil and criminal procedure for the problems caused by ethnic disputes and human armed conflicts in the modern society. He was especially one who maintains the language and customs of the group, and social security in Taiwan.

Since 30 July of 1988, Maa settled himself in law as a chief executive and scrivener at Central Legal, Real Estate, and Accounting Services Office; it is in the equivalent to a solicitor of the United Kingdom. The Office provided full legal, accounting, real estate, and commercial services to the public. He did his job as a person legally appointed by another to act as his or her agent in the transaction of business, specifically one qualified and licensed to act for plaintiffs and defendants in legal proceedings and affairs. Over and above Maa was a chairman and executive consultant at Taiwan Credit Information Company®, founded in 1994. The company offered services to the public in response to need and demand in the area of credit information.

Maa had excellent experiences in political and law work was pertaining to mixed civil and crime, the code of mixed civil and criminal procedure, construction, and commercial law abroad. The experiences of legal services related to the rights of private individuals and legal proceedings concerning these rights as distinguished. In the criminal proceedings, he did many cases for the defendants. Although an act committed or omitted in violation of a law forbidding or commanding it and for which punishment is imposed upon conviction; but he also laid legal claim, required as useful, just, proper, or necessary to the defendants under the human rights in the meantime. This provision ensures to the defendant a real voice in the subject.

The men whose judgement we respect are those who do not allow prejudices, preferences, or personalities to influence their decisions. Profit and self-aggrandisement are likewise ignored in their determination to reach an equitable and fair settlement. What are the basic principles upon which good judgement is founded? A keen intellect, a normal emotionally, a through understanding of human nature, experience of law work, sincerity, and integrity.

Developed a Technique for Abstract Photography and Abstractionist

In 1982, Maa developed a technique for abstractive photography, which applied “rayonism” to the photographic works. In November of 1984, Maa was 26-year-old, he instructed many professors and students of National Taiwan Normal University in photography of abstract impressionism and rayonnisme in Taipei, Taiwan. The word “rayonnisme” is French for rayonism - a style of abstract painting developed in 1911 in Russia.

Maa staged 32 individual, extraordinary exhibitions and annual special exhibitions on photography of abstractive image and Rayonnisme around Taiwan / Formosa. Maa was the first exhibitor around the country. All of the invited displays were by the Chinese Government, cultural and artistic organisations, and sponsors. Maa’s earliest exhibition took place in the National Taiwan Arts Education Institute (Museum) on 19 December 1983 when Maa was 25 years old; Maa was the youngest exhibitor in the history of the Institute in any solo exhibitions. The Institute that was opened in March 1957, kept a collection of Maa’s work. It is currently updating the Institute’s internal organisation and strengthening co-operation with leading institutes and museums around the world. Meanwhile, it widened the institute’s scope to increase its emphasis on Taiwan’ regional culture and folk arts.

Modernization in the Modern Abstract Arts of Taiwan

Maa’s works is the beginning of modernization in the modern abstract arts of Taiwan, China and greater Chinese society in the world. The use of “modernisation” as a concept that is opposed to “Traditional” of “Conservative” ideas began with the approach of the 20th century. It spreads rapidly through academic circles, and was broadly accepted as a means to reform society. Chinese Manchu Qing (Ching) dynasty’s first steps toward modernisation began in the Tung-chih era (1862-1874) with the “Self-Empowerment Movement”. During the late 19th century, as late Manchu dynasty was confronted on all sides by foreign aggression, voices throughout society debated the most effective means to reform and strengthen the country. Some advocated “combining the best of East and West”, while others went so far as to call for “complete Westernisation”. Taiwan was at the centre of these waves of reform. Faced with direct threats against the island by foreign enemies, the Chinese Ching dynasty court took special steps to push Taiwan’s modernisation.

In a role just like that of a gardener wanting to create a rich and fertile environment for the seeds of culture, one in which Maa may sprout, grow and bloom. Maa aims to provide an educational stimulus for society by introducing his works - Maa can express the neo-romantic spirit deftly from various creations and supporting international artistic exchanges. Maa believes that the first step in creating such a new and independent state is the real emergence of culture and arts, for which the art and science of designing and erecting buildings, and fine arts (including photography and motion picture) of the civilization is a good measurement of success. For the foreseeable future, Maa should be continuing to forge ahead, working diligently and unceasingly towards its mission of raising China and Formosa / Taiwan’s culture in his spare time.

Became an Author and a Scholar

In 1980, TianLiang Maa completed his first book - scenario original “The Soul's Sentimentalizing”, also named: “Hun Yun : Jin Qi Tu Rui” 電影原著《魂韻》(衿契吐蕊) then Maa was at the age of 22. In 1983, The General Library of the University of California, Berkeley in the United States of America, collected and kept Maa’s writings - scenario original 「魂韻 : 衿契吐蕊」“Hun Yun : jin qi tu rui”, included a musical composition of his own – “Sonate Nr. 1 C-dur op. 3 für Klavier (piano)”, composed on 3rd April 1977 then Maa was 18 years old. The works were published in 1980; the theme was based on “The Soul's Sentimentalizing”. Another masterpiece was an Album of Academic Work for News Publication “TianLiang Maa (Theophilus Raynsford Mann) Photographic Exhibition of Rayonnisme / Rayonism”, published in 1985. The Hathi Trust Digital Library, the University of Michigan also collected and kept Maa’s writings.

Authorship

Maa’s articles and writings were published in more than 200 different kinds of domestic and foreign magazines, newspapers, and periodicals, in the period between May of 1972 and 1990s. It was all started when Maa was just 13-year-old. Many of which have been very influential. These have been quoted by Western and Eastern scholars many times in the last few years, making Maa one of the highly cited technological, artistic, and managing public administrators in the world in the late 20th and early 21st century. The Ministry of the Interior in Taiwan had registered Maa’s professional writings and given him two certificates of copyright. The numbers are 33080 and 33081 on 4th July of 1985; and Taiwan’s Gazette of The Presidential Office issue No. 4499, featured his writings on 4th September 1985.

Wind Mill in Kuzelov – technological monument

Copper crystals from the Precambrian of Michigan, USA. (SMM JTR 711, Seaman Mineral Museum, Michigan Technological University, Houghton, Michigan, USA)

A mineral is a naturally-occurring, solid, inorganic, crystalline substance having a fairly definite chemical composition and having fairly definite physical properties. At its simplest, a mineral is a naturally-occurring solid chemical. Currently, there are about 5400 named and described minerals - about 200 of them are common and about 20 of them are very common.

The copper crystals shown above come from northern Michigan's Portage Lake Volcanic Series, an extremely thick, Precambrian-aged, flood-basalt deposit that fills up an ancient continental rift valley.

Copper mineralization occurred during the late Mesoproterozoic, at 1.05 to 1.06 billion years ago. The Portage Lake host rocks are 1.093 to 1.097 billion years old.

Silver from the Precambrian of Michigan, USA. (public display, Seaman Mineral Museum, Michigan Technological University, Houghton, Michigan, USA)

At its simplest, a mineral is a naturally-occurring solid chemical. Currently, there are over 6000 named and described minerals - about 200 of them are common and about 20 of them are very common. To find a native element in nature, it must be relatively non-reactive and there must be some concentration process. Metallic, semimetallic (metalloid), and nonmetallic elements are known in their native state as minerals.

Silver is part of the gold-group of metallic elements. Silver is a precious metal, but is far less valuable than gold or platinum. Silver usually occurs as a silver sulfide mineral, but it also occurs in nature in its native state, often in the form of twisted wires. Silver is moderately soft and has a silvery-white color on fresh surfaces that tarnishes to darker colors. Elemental silver in nature is often found alloyed with other metals. Naturally alloyed gold-silver is called electrum.

The silver specimen shown above comes from the Wolverine Mine, which is hosted in northern Michigan's Portage Lake Volcanic Series. This unit is an extremely thick, Precambrian-aged, flood-basalt deposit that fills up an ancient continental rift valley. The old rift valley, analogous to the present-day East African Rift Valley, extends from Kansas to Minnesota to the Lake Superior area to southern Michigan.

Native silver (Ag) is sometimes found closely associated with copper.

Silver at the Wolverine Mine crystallized 1.05 to 1.06 billion years ago in an ophitic basalt lava flow, the Kearsarge Flow (Portage Lake Volcanic Series, upper Mesoproterozoic, 1.095 billion years). The principal mining target at this mine was copper.

Β. Σερπιέρη.

In 1864 the mines of Lavrion working again after several centuries. Poor workers from all over Greece arrived on the scene to work, among them many women and children. They worked from dawn to dusk without stopping, with unique group mice, unique animals surviving in the region and through the galleries. Most often workers die early from lead poisoning or pneumoconiosis, diseases that occur in people exposed for years to dust and deadly chemicals mine ....

The plants belong to the French Mining Company of Lavrion founder and owner of G. B. Serpieri.

The Minuteman ICBM program has its roots in the technological revolution of the late 1950s and 1960s. Though the US already deployed several hundred Atlas and Titan ICBMs, these used liquid propellant, meaning they would need to be fueled before launch, and their early-generation computers were inaccurate. Atlas and Titans by necessity carried huge megaton warheads and were mainly "citybusters," designed to cause maximum casualties; because they needed to be fueled first, there was the possibility that a massive Soviet first strike would destroy the missiles before they could be launched.

The Minuteman, on the other hand, was meant to be solid-fueled, which meant it could be deployed as ready to fire; it would only need to be refueled every few years. This cut down on the large support facilities the Atlas and Titan used, meaning the Minuteman could be widely dispersed, guaranteeing that a Soviet first strike would not be able to get all of them--enough would survive that a nuclear war would truly result in mutually assured destruction. The solid-fuel propellant tended to burn quickly, but a breakthrough in design in 1956, as part of the US Navy's Polaris submarine-launched missile project, solved this problem. The increasing use of transistors in solid-state computers solved the accuracy issue about the same time--whereas the Atlas and Titans would be lucky to hit within five miles of their target, the Minuteman could strike within a mile, which was good enough with a nuclear warhead. This also meant that the Minuteman could carry smaller warheads.

The Minuteman was the ultimate in ICBM design, and the first Minuteman I entered service in 1962. Subsequent improvements led to the more accurate Minuteman II, and then finally the Minuteman III in 1975, which was still more accurate and, most importantly, carried multiple warheads (MIRV), allowing one missile to hit three targets. Since the early 1990s, the USAF ICBM force has standardized on the Minuteman III, and with the retirement of the Peacekeeper in 2005, the only one in American service.

This Minuteman II is a hybrid of an actual LGM-30B and replica parts, and was never operational; it was used as a gate guard for the 44th Strategic Missile Wing's headquarters at Ellsworth AFB, South Dakota. When the 44th SMW was deactivated in 1994, the missile was refurbished and donated to the Fargo Air Museum in neigboring North Dakota.

It could probably use another round of restoration--rust is noticeable on the missile, and the paint has begun to fade--but it still serves as a gate guard for the Fargo Air Museum.

#ITSC2015 Technological relevancy between Autonomous Driving and Online Game

Chief Advanced Service Architect and Director at Intel Corporation

Visiting Associate Professor at Nagoya University, Japan

In a decade since 2000, almost all the PCs became connected to the Internet. In another decade since 2010, with the advancement of wireless communication technologies, many non-PC devices, such as Smartphones, Tablets, STBs, and even Vehicles will be connected to the Internet and many types of sensor data will be uploaded for Big Data analysis and sometimes for additional analysis using Artificial Intelligence on globally held mega-scale Data Center.

In early 2000s, at the emergence of ADSL, which provided always connected broadband network with low latency, MMORPG (Massively Multi-client On-line Role Playing Game), a category of on-line game, was made possible. Thousands of game players are connected to a cluster of game servers, on which avatars of players and computer-generated monsters backed up by Artificial Intelligence interact with others.

During 2004-2012, I applied MMORPG technologies for Telematics by replacing PCs with Vehicles and analysed the driving and traffic related environments such as traffic jam, strong rainfall and slippery spots and even used for battery management of Electric Vehicles. And, furthermore, the technologies are relevant to Autonomous Driving. One of the examples would be that the computer-generated monsters walking among human avatars in the cyber world could be analogous to computer-driven vehicle moving through people-driven vehicles in the real world. I would like to outline the relevancy between MMORPG and Autonomous Driving from various aspects.

Today, after the termination of mining operations, the area of Lavrion retains its historical significance, and its unique beauty. The facilities of the 19th century and its surroundings have been declared historic, monuments by the Ministry of Culture and is an important example of industrial and mining technology of the past, a monument of human toil and important chapter in Greek industrial archeology.

Here's another tiny-planet panorama. This one features the School of Nursing and Health Services building at Tennessee Technological University. It's been the backdrop of several of my images shot on the Quad.

The copper specimen shown above comes from northern Michigan's Portage Lake Volcanic Series, an extremely thick, Precambrian-aged, flood-basalt deposit that fills up an ancient continental rift valley.

Copper mineralization occurred during the late Mesoproterozoic, at 1.05 to 1.06 billion years ago. The Portage Lake host rocks are 1.093 to 1.097 billion years old.

Kodak Vest Pocket an ORIGINAL model Vest Pocket Kodak. The 1st camera to take 127 film which was introduced in 1912 by Kodak specifically for THIS camera. it has square cornered bellows this camera that went on to become one of Kodak's most successful items, selling over 2 million in various models up to the mid 30's. The compactness of the folded camera, 4 3/4 x 2 1/2 x 1" made it truly "Vest Pocket" sized, and it became a favorites of the US troops in World War 1, earning it the name of "The Soldiers Camera", something Kodak encouraged in their marketing of course, despite the fact that troops were not supposed to carry cameras. But this is the 1st of them all.

Condition; the early Ball Bearing shutter works, the trellis struts are all still strong and straight. The bellows are still firm and well formed. There are no dings or dents in the aluminium body. There is one missing screw in on the front panel. Comes with a leather case.

This camera an impact on photography as it was in 1912 and continued through the next 20 odd years.

Metalhead - Donatello's half-pint associate and technological creation. He is a feisty little Turtle-bot. He received a few upgrades since we last saw him, compelling the Turtles to test out his new moves. They all are impressed with him except for Leonardo, who is apparently still hesitant about Metalhead's dependability, was later convinced that he could indeed be trusted.

In the 1987 cartoon series, Metalhead first appeared in the episode "The Making of Metalhead" where it he imbued with thoughts and memories of the Turtles. This gave Metalhead an identity disorder until Donatello reprograms him to work for the Ninja Turtles. Metalhead replicated the voices of the Ninja Turtles, Shredder, and April O'Neil, meaning that Metalhead was voiced by Cam Clarke, Barry Gordon, Rob Paulsen, Townsend Coleman, Dorian Harewood (who was filling in for James Avery at the time), and Renae Jacobs. In this appearance, He was only seen again when Donatello tries to get him to vacuum their TV room in the episode "Big Bug Blunder".

In the 2003 series, Metal Head was part of the final attack on the Tengu Shredder. Metal Head appears in the "Fast Forward" season episode The Journal. Metal Head also appears in TMNT: Back to the Sewer. He shows up in the episodes "Super Power Struggle" and "Wedding Bells and Bytes".

In the 2012 Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles series, Metalhead was created by Donatello from a salvaged Kraang droid as a way to upgrade "his" weapons. Donatello could control Metalhead via a NES-like controller while observing through a TV monitor since there are cameras in Metalhead's eyes. Donatello can also speak through Metalhead voice box.

While Metalhead proved to be nearly unstoppable in combat situations, he was far too clunky and heavy to properly sneak around. Later in the episode, when his brothers became overwhelmed, Donatello sent Metalhead in to take care of the krangg. He easily defeated the Kraang attacking them, knocking off the control antenna in the process. One Kraang realized that Metalhead was made from their technology and detached from its robot body where it opted to control Metalhead. The Kraang-controlled Metalhead and attacked the Ninja Turtles, nearly killing them until Donatello showed up in person. Donatello managed to defeat Metalhead by crashing a support pillar on it.

In a later episode, Metalhead was rebuilt by Donatello where it aided the Ninja Turtles in the battle against the Kraang. Apparently now programmed with some degree of independence and operating without any sign of a direct controller, Metalhead drove the Shellraiser into the TCRI building lobby and subsequently attacked the Kraang guards while the Ninja Turtles used their new gliders to infiltrate the building from the roof.

Metalhead is reconfigured by Donatello in "Metalhead Rewired", in which he exhibits a personality similar to R2-D2 . After a battle with the Kraang goes awry, Leonardo, Michelangelo and Raphael vote to terminate Metalhead, who quickly escapes before Donatello can do so. Metalhead is able to find a portal to a Kraang prison where many mutants from the series have been incarcerated. later Metalhead saves the turtles by staying behind to close the portal and later self destructs.

Weapons-

He has extending and rocket propelled punches and kick attacks, as well as a machine guns in his chest and rocket launchers. he also is programed and skilled with strong ninjutsu capabilities.

Video Games-

Metalhead appears in Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Turtles in Time as the boss of the second level. Turtles in Time Re-Shelled; The instruction manual of the Super NES version of Turtles in Time erroneously refers to Metalhead as Mechaturtle.

Tianliang Ma

~ a Taiwanese social reformer, philosopher, photographer and film director

“Touching Fairness and Justice”

馬天亮

~ 臺灣的社會改革者,哲學家,攝影師,和電影導演

《感動的公平與正義》

這是個什麼樣子的社會?

Became an Academic and Film Director

Today, Maa is a professor at Space Time Life Research Academy, and a photographer, film director, and computer engineer now live and work in London.

With the booming popularity of nostalgic-styled motorcycles, Kawasaki drew from the vaults of history to create the W650. This addition to Kawasaki's line-up is reminiscent of the styling and technological design features of the Kawasaki W1 and W1SA parallel twin-cylinder motorcycles of the late '60s and early '70s. Swing a leg over it and experience some Good Times.

Improved comfort and handling for this classic remake.

Kawasaki drew from the vaults of its own history when it created the W650. Reminiscent of the styling and technological design features of the Kawasaki W1 and W1SA parallel twin-cylinder motorcycles of the late ’60s and early ’70s, the W650 piqued the interest of enthusiasts everywhere.

It only gets better in 2001. A new seat and redesigned tank pads enhance rider comfort, while revised steering geometry and front suspension changes improve handling.

The W650’s twin cylinder, air-cooled 676cc engine churns out plenty of responsive low- and mid-range power, due in part to its long-stroke 360 degree crankshaft that has both pistons rising and falling together. A modern four-valve cylinder head helps give the W650 a healthy top-end, too. The valves are actuated by a single overhead camshaft that is driven by a hypoid gear, where the bevel shaft is offset to one side of the gears for less noise and friction, and increased durability.

The pair of constant velocity carburetors are equipped with the Kawasaki Throttle Responsive Ignition Control (K-TRIC) throttle position sensor. Connected to the Digital Ignition system, K-TRIC varies ignition timing according to throttle position and engine rpm so that the ignition compensates for differing engine loads for crisp throttle response and better fuel efficiency.

Other modern engine features include a lightweight and compact rare-earth magnet generator rotor, wet sump, balancer shaft to help eliminate vibration, pushbutton electric starting and a slick-shifting five-speed transmission with Kawasaki’s Positive Neutral Finder that makes shifting into neutral when stopped a breeze. The W650 also runs much cleaner than the machines that inspired its design due to the Kawasaki Clean Air (KCA) system. Fresh air is fed into the exhaust just beyond the exhaust valves for reduced emissions.

The W650’s chassis design is clean and simple. A traditional double-cradle frame uses a hefty square-section backbone for rigidity. A half-degree increase in the steering angle plus a 2mm larger axle and new front hub featuring larger bearings improve handling. A steel swingarm and twin shocks with adjustable preload provide the rear suspension, while the ride up front has been improved with new fork springs and revised rebound and compression damping. Braking power is supplied by a 300mm front disc and rear drum.

This machine is finished off in classic Kawasaki W-model styling. A shapely gas tank features high quality paint and chrome with redesigned rubber knee pads that are thinner, lighter and have smoother edges. The shape of the long seat was slightly altered and padded ribs added to make it more comfortable. It still has plenty of room for both rider and passenger, plus it’s finished with a retro-looking white bead. A wide, chromed handlebar helps put the rider in an upright, natural position. Modern instrumentation that is re-angled toward the rider for better visibility includes a liquid crystal display for the odometer and trip meter.

The Kawasaki W650 recalls the great machines that helped to lay the foundation of Kawasaki performance. While its styling is a trip into the past, its modern features have the W650 pointed directly into the future.

2D GeoSEIS map of multifactor health risks, geophysical and geodynamical hazard zones is created by decoding and processing of SPOT image (space resolution: 10-20м).

The multifactor nonlinear correlation between solar activity and cosmic ray variations, geophysical, geodynamical, geochemical, atmospheric, technological, biological, socio-economical processes and oncologic case rate frequency, general and primary population sickness cases in Dnepropetrovsk City (1.2 million persons) are described by the multifactor predictive 3D GeoSEIS Model of geopathic zones that determines the human health risk and hazards.

THE MULTIFACTOR PREDICTIVE SEIS (GIS) MODEL OF ECOLOGICAL, GENETICAL AND POPULATION HEALTH RISK IN CONNECTION WITH DANGEROUS BIO-GEODYNAMICAL PROCESSES IN GEOPATHOGENIC HAZARD ZONES (ECO-INFORMA 2001// Chicago, USA, 2001)

* We have created the multifactor predictive 3D SEIS Tomography model for the analysis of multidimensional Phase-Metric SpaceTime nonlinear correlation and variations of rhythms of human health, ecological, genetic, epidemiological risks, demographic, socio-economic, bio-geophysical, bio-geodynamical processes in geopathogenic hazard zones.

* Space maps of vegetation index, anthropogenic-landscape and landscape-geophysical human health risk of Dnepropetrovsk City are presented based elements of multilayer GIS and 3D GeoSEIS Tomography model, which include multispectral images, maps of different geophysical, geochemical, anthropogenic and citogenic risk factors, maps of integral oncologic case rate frequency, general and primary population sickness cases for administrative districts.

* Structural map of large bio-geodynamical (geopathogenic) zones (Fig. 3) with marked desynchronization of natural and anthropogenic rhythms offers the most plausible phase-metric basis for their study and forecast of oncologic case rate frequency (1) of childrens / adults “NOV” (2) and hazardous environmental destruction processes.

i had a little technological breakthrough today. since the server side thingybobs came about in SL, free temporary textures haven't been available to upload, hence halting all development on the several half-finished garments i had on my hard disk. today, i found a way to upload them for free, so they appear for me, but are grey for everyone else. i can now tweak a few things and put these on sale...

they are:

1) Britannia - which i like, but i'm not ecstatic about the back. i might change it.

2) Alexis - the first one i designed, looked a mess around the sides, but now it's fixed.

3) Portofino - which is the most recent design. i think there's a hint of British Airways in there somewhere, but i rather love it.

*Britannia & Portofino now available in my shops or on marketplace.secondlife.com/p/Piper-Moda-Portofino-swimsui...

a nice pool, waterfall and photo-realistic jungle seems to have sprung up right in front of my house too. how lucky is that!

12 Sept, 2011. Adnan Abdul Khaliq is pursuing Telecom Engineering at Hajvery University. HU awarded scholarship to Adnan for a Study Abroad Semester at Fontys University, Netherlands. The Scholarship included Return Air Ticket, Comprehensive Insurance, and 5000 Euros Stipend Money for daily expenses among other things. The following essay is written by him, which presents a glimpse of his Experience of Studying and Living Abroad in Europe.

“I was studying in Fontys Hogescholen University, Netherlands in the Discipline of Electrical Engineering. Fonty’s is well Renowned & Famous University of Applied Sciences in the Netherlands, it’s located in the Technological heart of The Netherlands known as the City of Technology Eindhoven. This city also great historical value as Mr Philips- the inventor of Bulb, was born in this city, hence this city is known as the City of Lights.

Since the altitude of Eindhoven is below sea level it was much colder than the other parts of The Netherlands. Eindhoven is multicultural metropolis, attracting people from Turkey, Morocco, Algeria, Spain, Brazil, Tunisia, India, Iran and from Schengen Countries, therefore it’s is blend of many different cultures.

I found the people of Eindhoven to be co-operative, friendly and very professional. They have a positive attitude towards life, and are satisfied with the facilities available in their city. Most attractive thing of Eindhoven was its Architecture – the way this city was build, maintained and established further. I am quite impressed by how much they have advanced in the field of Technology as well.

At the Host University my classes began at 9 a.m. I usually had 3 classes per day and two Lab work classes. Mostly, I used to go back to my residence in the afternoon after completing the assignments with my class-fellows. I took Eight Courses: Power Electronics, Digital Techniques, Control Engineering, Frequency Analysis, Structured Design, Modeling of Physical Processes, Industrial Design for Engineering and Assembly, Embedded System and Term EXPO Project. And I successfully completed all these subjects.

I really enjoyed the festivities during their Christmas & New Year. They were the best, and most delightful days of my life. The whole city was lit and decorated in a very aesthetically pleasing way. There were HUGE Discounts in all prices of goods, clothing, electronics, and everything else. I did quite a lot of shopping during those days. I also purchased a Sony Vaio Laptop with the stipend money I got; it cost me 850 Euros and a Sony 14 Mega Pixel Digital Camera to capture these memorable days.

I travelled throughout Eindhoven using their public transport system of busses & trams. But it was quite expensive, so as I got familiar with the roads and towns, I bought a Bicycle for myself and travelled the city via Bicycle. I also used to go to the University via the bicycle. My friends & I, also from Hajvery University (HU) travelled a lot and did shopping together. It was a great and a fascinating experience for us.

I took this wonderful opportunity to visit some other countries as well. I went to Brussels Belgium, where I stayed for one night. I went to Paris, France and stayed there for one week, in my humble opinion, Paris is the world’s most beautiful country. I visited many Landmarks and famous places in Paris: The Eiffel Tower, Louvre Museum ( where the famous painting of Mona Lisa is on display), Parc Luxembourg, Concorde, Wheel of Paris, Arc De Triomphe etc.

I learned some basics of Dutch & French. I made many friends from different nationalities like French, Spanish, Dutch, Brazilian, Tunisian, Indian, Chinese, Turkish, German, Russian, Iranian etc. Getting to know their culture, religion and above all their approach to the education was a good experience. We also talked about our fields of Engineering, shared our knowledge and ideas on different topics. I am still in touch with them.

When I first reached there, I faced problems with my studies as I wasn’t used to studying 9 courses in a semester. Therefore, it was very difficult for me to cope up with the pace of courses there. I also had difficulties in the beginning with food and cooking for myself. But gradually I successfully faced these issues and all others which arose during the the semester.

This experience has had a great impact in my life. It has broadened my view towards life. I have acquired a wide variety of skills during the study experience in the European university environment. This experience helped me a great to expand my knowledge of Engineering as well as my knowledge about the world. This experience helped me a great deal to plan my future; I visited in many Universities for my Masters studies.

In the end I would conclude by saying that I am very Thankful to Mr Fahd and Hajvery University (HU) who believed in me, and in my skills and gave me this once in a life time, golden opportunity to study one semester at Fonty’s University, Eindhoven, Netherlands on a full scholarship.”

~ 臺灣的社會改革者,哲學家,攝影師,和電影導演

Since first constructed in 1975, the University Union has been considered the “living room” of the campus, but technological changes, code requirements and the demand for more space created a much-needed addition and renovation for the building. This 72,000 SF, three-story expansion provides an amenity-rich addition at the heart of the Sacramento State campus with more meeting rooms, student spaces and offices for University functions. Delivered using the University’s innovative Collaborative Design-Build method, this LEED Gold-designed project engaged stakeholders in workshops throughout the design process, ensuring University staff and student expectations were captured.

The design solution gives the building an essential identity in a new main entry with an expansive double height pavilion, outdoor gathering space, and retail to activate the pedestrian zone. A large Starbucks and relocated Peak Adventures retail store with bicycle repair shop, greet the public once inside. A modern Games Room has new pool tables, ping pong, and various video game consoles for students to use between classes. Lounge spaces, divisible conference suites and open offices for Union-specific and ASI-related departments are also included to meet demand.

By creating more permeable and light-filled spaces on the north side and a discernible main entry, the University Union expansion is not only designed to fit demand and meet modern code requirements, it allows the Union to be a beacon for student life on the campus again.

Lawrence Technological University was founded in 1932 in Highland Park, MI by the Lawrence brothers as the Lawrence Institute of Technology; it changed its name in 1989. The institute moved to Southfield, Michigan from its site in Highland Park, Michigan in 1955. I am still researching to see who designed the engineering building and architecture building; the Michigan Modern blog has that Earl W. Pellerin "led the teams" that designed the buildings. The Taubman Student Service Center was designed in 2006 by Art Smith of the firm Harley Ellis Devereaux.

Somewhere between technological singularity and ecological singularity

Quelque part entre la singularité technologique et la singularité écologique

francois-quevillon.com/w/?p=5231

The term ‘resolution’ is a determination of functional settings in the technological domain. While the term is often conflated into a standard numerical quantity or a measure of acutance, such as samples per inch, the term also entails a space of compromise between different actors (objects, materialities and protocols) in dispute over norms (frame rate, number of pixels, etc.). Generally, settings either ossify as requirements and de facto standards, or are notated as standardized norms by organizations such as the International Organization for Standardization (ISO). A resolution - or rather the resolving - of an image thus means more than just a superficial setting of width x height, or frames per second.

Besides a width and height, a screen also has a ‘thickness’ and ‘depth’ (Gonring, 2011). This thickness of the screen acts as a membrane, that shrouds the technology from its audience, while its depth can be understood as the space where protocols behind (or beyond) the screen organize settings, that in their turn inform the image politically, technically and aesthetically. Resolutions should be understood as a trade off between these standard settings; actors (languages, objects, materials) that dispute their stakes (frame rate, number of pixels and colours, etc.), following set rules (protocols).

The more complex an image processing technology is, the more actors it entails, each following their own ‘protocols’ to resolve an image, all influencing its final resolution (think: liquid crystal, CPU, compression, etc.). However, these actors and their inherent complexities are positioned more and more beyond the fold of everyday settings, outside the afforded options of the interface. This is how resolutions do not just function as an Interface Effect (Galloway, 2012) but as hyperopic lens, obfuscating some of the most immediate stakes and possible alternative resolutions of media. When was the last time you saw or thought about a video with 8 or 3 corners?

Unknowingly, the user and audience suffers from technological hyperopia. It has lost track of the most fundamental compromises that are at stake within resolutions. The question now is, have we become unable to construct our own settings, or have we become blind to them?

Determinations such as standard resolutions are as dangerous as any other presumption; they preclude alternatives, and sustain harmful or merely kippled ways of running things. This is why any radical digital materialist believes in informed materiality: while every string of data is ambiguously fluid and promiscuous, it has the potential to be manipulated into anything. This is how a rheology of data can take form, facilitating a fluidity in data transactions where actors themselves are at stake.

Resolution theory is a theory of literacy: literacy of the machines, the people, the people creating the machines, and the people being created by the machines. But resolution studies is not only about the effects of technological progress or the aesthetization of the scales of resolution; which has already been done under the titles such as Interface Effect or Protocol. Resolution studies is research about the standards that could have been in place, but are not - and which as a result are now left outside of the discourse.

Through challenging the actors that are involved in the setting of resolutions, the user can scale actively between increments of hyperopia and myopia. This is why we need to shift our understanding of resolution as the setting of disputable norms, which compromise more and move actively to the setting of more diverse resolutions.
