The National STEM Guitar Project, in partnership with NSF Advanced Technological Education (ATE) Centers with funding provided through a grant from The National Science Foundation (#1304405), hosts innovative Guitar Building Institutes around the United States. The 5-day institutes, combined with additional instructional activities comprising 80 hours, provide faculty training on science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) for middle, high school, and post-secondary faculty. The institutes present and teach participants hands-on, applied learning techniques to help engage students and spark excitement for learning STEM subject matter.
Nationwide, there are increasing concerns from businesses about the supply of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics trained workers. Science and math test scores in the U.S. are among the lowest around the world.
The goal and objective of the STEM Guitar Building Institutes is to showcase a new way to present learning for students with applied methods.

In fabricating a fictional institute and its archive, the artists imagine vernacular technological practices operating across the African continent. The artists embed archival footage and 3D scanned elements within game-engine and AI-generated pixel landscapes to traverse new geopolitical imaginaries: with portable ‘backpack laboratories,’ the crop field, smelting furnace, forest or river becomes a mobile laboratory, a workshop.

Child’s jacket, trousers and shoes, 1800–1900
China
Cotton, silk and fur
This chequered design, derived from opera costumes, was believed to confuse the eye and thus keep evil forces away from the wearer. The patchwork is created from lozenges, sewn into a three-dimensional cube effect. The shoes are made in the form of tigers, symbolising courage and protection. In China, the word for ‘tiger’ is pronounced the same as ‘to protect’.*
Child’s hat in the form of a fish dragon, 1850–1900
China
Cotton, silk, embroidery and gilded thread
The creative energy of many Chinese mothers in the 1800s was channelled into making headwear for their children, especially their sons. Embellished caps were worn on auspicious occasions such as New Year, but could also be protective talismans. They are embroidered and appliqued with extraordinary imagery, like this dragon with horns, fish scales, whiskers and bulging eyes, sewn with a long tail at the back.*
Everyday life
By the 1850s, China’s population reached a staggering 450 million. Some ninety per cent of people lived a basic life, negotiating the devastation caused by conflicts and natural disasters. Average life expectancy was just forty years old. Despite these struggles, cities rapidly developed as displaced yet resilient people migrated for safety, work and food.
A growing body of entrepreneurs developed businesses using new technologies and materials, some even taking over state roles. Handicrafts were industrialised and further commercialised. Wealthy people’s homes and fashion reflected these political, cultural, technological and environmental changes, which included interactions with foreign communities*
From the exhibition
China’s Hidden Century
(May 2023 – October 2023 )
China’s hidden century
Manchu armies from the northeast of China overthrew the Ming dynasty, founding the Qing dynasty and ruling China from 1644 to 1912. By 1796, the Qing ruled over one-third of all humanity and established one of the most prosperous empires in world history. In 1912 imperial rule collapsed. The dynasty’s final years were challenged by natural disasters, internal uprisings and foreign invasions.Despite this, the nineteenth century was an era of extraordinary cultural creativity, and of political, social and technological innovation, as people across China lived resourceful and resilient lives.
In 1796, the Qing ruled over one-third of all humanity and was one of the most prosperous empires in world history. By 1912 it had collapsed, bringing an end to some 2,000 years of dynastic rule and giving way to a modern Chinese republic. The Manchu dynasty that ruled at that point was challenged by internal uprisings and foreign invasion. Despite this, the 19th century was an era of extraordinary cultural creativity and of political, social and technological innovation.
In the shadow of these events lie stories of remarkable individuals – at court, in armies, among artists, in booming cosmopolitan cities and on the global stage – which this exhibition brings to life. An impressive 300 objects and paintings from 30 lenders are arranged into five themes: the court; the military; artists; urban life; global Qing; reformers and revolutionaries.

Technological improvements have resulted in cybercrime. It is a serious crime that involves the use of computers and the internet.
A technological oddity from 2007. This was a card dedicated to handling physics simulations (water, cloth etc). It plugged into a spare (now very rare) PCI card on your motherboard and mostly made a lot of noise.
It is worth remembering that this was a time when our home computers had one core, sometimes two. These days even your phone has more than one core. 😂
Unfortunately the card didn't catch on, but the company was acquired by Nvidia and the technology incorporated into its graphics cards.
Dzata: The Institute of Technological Consciousness is an artistic research project by South African artists Russel Hlongwane, Francois Knoetze and Amy Wilson. In fabricating a fictional institute and its archive, the artists imagine centuries-old vernacular technological practices from across the African continent. The work takes the form of video, a creative-critical text, sculptural masks, costumes and devices, and a youth workshop series.
There is a richer and more diverse technological history than the dominant narrative of invention, development and progress. The artists situate their enquiry at the point at which the social, the cultural, the spiritual, the political intersect.
