Working Alone: Tips and Techniques for Solo Building (1999) by John Carroll. 152 pages.

Pretty much what the cover says: clever ideas for accomplishing a variety of construction and carpentry tasks without assistance, and suggestions as to which tasks should not be attempted without assistance.

The gist: clamps of every kind, brackets, and jigs.

Helpful information, but also makes me realize how much I don't know and will never know when it comes to... well, not just to building things, but everything! Kind of discouraging in that regard.

Author John Carroll continues to contribute articles to Fine Homebuilding magazine and website and to the Journal of Light Construction (jlconline.com) website.

This is the 4th book I have read in my effort to read 100 books.

Documenting fonts. This one is simple - I call it Twobytwo since it is based on a simple grid where one pixel is a 2x2 brick. Details on Swooshable.

More to come soon. The end result is to build a LEGO font tester where you write text and get it in a few different LEGO fonts. Like Google Fonts.

This was the first tank I built that had a frontal turret built with angled plates.

This is just a photo showing the flexibility of the technique.

Leco ON736 - Carbon and Sulfur in Inorganic Materials by the Combustion Infrared Detection Technique

The Leco ON736 family of Elemental Analyzers is designed for routine measurement of oxygen and nitrogen content of inorganic materials, ferrous and nonferrous alloys, and refractory materials using the inert gas fusion technique.

Request by Peter Hsieh

National Energy Technology Laboratory - NETL-Albany, 1450 Queen Ave. SW, Albany, Oregon.

Reference by Peter Hsieh

Trace amounts of carbon, sulfur, nitrogen, and oxygen can make a big difference in the structure and properties of many alloys. Combustion analysis can be used to measure the concentration of carbon and sulfur in a number of different ores and metals. A small amount of the sample is first combusted in oxygen. The amount of carbon

dioxide and sulfur dioxide produced from the reaction is then measured with an infrared detector.

A similar approach is applied to measure the amount of nitrogen and oxygen present in each sample. The sample is placed inside a graphite crucible and heated rapidly. Oxygen present in the molten sample reacts readily with the graphite crucible, and the amount of carbon dioxide formed from the combustion reaction is measured with an infrared detector and used to calculate the amount of oxygen originally present in the sample. Nitrogen gas escaping from the molten sample is measured with a separate thermal conductivity detector, as it is invisible to the infrared detector.

By measuring the composition of alloys down to parts-per-million levels, it is possible to work out how changes to ingredients and processing conditions affect their composition.

Taken this for the tag team photo blog for this week.

I thought I try out the blak field technique. Not really worked properly as I hope. Will re read and try again another time.

Harris shutter technique.

(Shot using a 24 mm homemade lens. This is one shot that might actually be better had I used a commercial lens. Imagine that!)

Just liked the abstractyness. Gotta love the fiddy.

Technique:

- Original dark moody photo. Add black and white adjustment layer. Adjust opacity as needed - this one is at about 50%.

- Create a new layer, use the fill bucket to make it a light beigy color. Fill the layer, set the blending to overlay (though I usually play around with most of the blending settings before choosing one. I really loved the color burn setting on this photo, but wanted to keep it simple), and adjust opacity as needed (this one is at about 40%).

Yeah ... that's all. :) I considered adding a raindrop texture, but again, just wanted to keep it simple. I think it's cool in its own right.

Oh! And I almost forgot. My friend Rhoda is rather new to Flickr and has started her own 365 project, so go check it out and make her feel loooooooved. :D

Not sure it entirley worked in this shot, taken on our camera by our friend Toma. In short, a long exposure during which the lens is zoomed from maximum wide angle to maximum telephoto.
