CP Rail's tech train heads east on the Watertown Sub as it approaches the Vettleson Road crossing just east of Nashotah, WI. The CP GP9u is a rather rare bird in these parts, which at the time of this photo was still dominated by Soo GP38-2's and ex-MILW GP40's and GP38-2's. Today it is all GP20ECO.
Luz Cristal S. Glangchai
From Stand-up to Start-up: Growing Girl Techies and Entrepreneurs
There aren't enough women techs and CEOs. University professor and entrepreneur Luz Cristal has observed how hard it is to get girls involved in science and technology. Many of her female students feel intimidated or insufficiently qualified to participate. Girls need to learn, even before they enter school and are shown what girls ‘should’ and ‘shouldn’t’ do, so they can succeed in these fields. Luz Cristal believes we need to give girls the confidence to believe they can do anything; 3D-print an engine, create software, or start a company. She teaches girls to think like entrepreneurs—by anticipating needs, innovating, creating, and taking calculated risks. When girls are exposed to entrepreneurial thinking, a profound change takes
place; they learn to problem solve, think critically and creatively, and become more confident in their ability to tackle challenges.

During NTEN's 2008 Non-profit Technology Conference a group of techies participated in several volunteer projects to bring technology to communities battered by the 2005 Katrina hurricane.
My group, comprised of consultants, non-profit workers, and Cisco Systems, traveled to a community center in St. Bernard Parrish to install wireless access points. St. Bernard Parrish was the hardest hit during the flood - only 6 houses were left standing out of 25,000 when the water rose 25 feet in 23 minutes.
It was an honor to be able to provide some help to this community and I'm grateful for the opportunity to talk with residents and keep the hope and momentum of positive work flowing.

With TogetherGreen funding, TogetherGreen fellow Jenna Hanson launched the Junior Audubon Society at the Trinity River Audubon Center in Dallas, Texas. Participants spent 10 months learning about nature and working on a grassland project to help create habitat for their mascot, the eastern meadowlark. These students led nature hikes, animal encounters, nature crafts, and gave special presentations. Thanks to Jenna, neighborhood children served as environmental educators for the surrounding community.
Thousands of techies sleep rough at HackSpaces all around the world. Please, if you have a spare room and high speed internet, help us help these poor geeks by adopting one today, and getting them off our bloody sofas!!
Total thanks to the techies at our last production!!

The key point here is to recycle. Now I've met some interesting and quirky people in my life and the people who created this creative masterpiece of turning old shoes into flower pots have both thumbs up in my book. Bloody genius! To me, I consider this a true portrait of my friends the doctors.
(Yes this does classify as a portrait. Reason being: portraits do not need to contain a person or yourself. They must however represent somebody or yourself and who they/you are as a person, this can include: a place, objects, animals...etc.)

When Trinity College students visited Barunga in the Northern Territory in September 2007 they were presented with a life-size papier-mâché freshwater crocodile. This is the work of Techy Masero. A gift to the College, the crocodile was created for the 2007 Barunga Festival.
