From Stand-up to Start-up: Growing Girl Techies and Entrepreneurs

There aren't enough women techs and CEOs. University professor and entrepreneur Luz Cristal has observed how hard it is to get girls involved in science and technology. Many of her female students feel intimidated or insufficiently qualified to participate. Girls need to learn, even before they enter school and are shown what girls ‘should’ and ‘shouldn’t’ do, so they can succeed in these fields. Luz Cristal believes we need to give girls the confidence to believe they can do anything; 3D-print an engine, create software, or start a company. She teaches girls to think like entrepreneurs—by anticipating needs, innovating, creating, and taking calculated risks. When girls are exposed to entrepreneurial thinking, a profound change takes

place; they learn to problem solve, think critically and creatively, and become more confident in their ability to tackle challenges.

During NTEN's 2008 Non-profit Technology Conference a group of techies participated in several volunteer projects to bring technology to communities battered by the 2005 Katrina hurricane.

My group, comprised of consultants, non-profit workers, and Cisco Systems, traveled to a community center in St. Bernard Parrish to install wireless access points. St. Bernard Parrish was the hardest hit during the flood - only 6 houses were left standing out of 25,000 when the water rose 25 feet in 23 minutes.

It was an honor to be able to provide some help to this community and I'm grateful for the opportunity to talk with residents and keep the hope and momentum of positive work flowing.

This is "Whitey", my first ever L lens bought in 2008. Used but never abused, it has been such a joy to shoot with. Though it is not IS and the IS II has came out, I don't think I will be parting ways with Whitey anytime soon as I'm very happy with it.

Strobist info: 580exII at 1/2 power and at 14mm zoom in a softbox umbrella to the left of camera triggered by Flashwave and silver reflector to the right.

For the techies, I did a selection round the performer and made a new layer via copy and put another layer below for the background. For the shadow I duplicated the top layer, used threshold adjustment to make it solid black then free transform to shear, followed by gaussian blur and opacity reduction and moved the girl's layer back to the top.

This is the geeky/techy part of Tokyo. On Sundays (busy day) the main street is closed down and people can walk on the streets. This is also the only part of Tokyo where you can bargin and if you are a gaijin and show your passport you can buy stuff tax free.

If you are looking for Anime, Manga, electronics, maid cafes, video games, and illegal (but legal there) things like... tasers and ninja stars, you can find them here.

(in case you don't have enough tech—for tech's sake)
