A couple of tips for anyone that is thinking of doing a shot similar to this:

1) Use warm water.

2) Go pee BEFORE you dump warm water on your crotch.

For all the techies out there...

Behold! My latest custom creation for the Scorpion. The next step towards the Sinister Six.

This proved to be quite the challenge compared to Lego's design and other fellow figglers. I used several inspired concepts from some comic books and video games to form this villain.

After a couple trial and errors, I chose this helmet. The chin strap kind of had a resemblance to the mandibles of the arachnid, in a high techy kind of way.

It's almost finished. I'm painting the helmet and the claws to match up with the suit. The tail may also get some tweaking as far as the tip is concerned. I'm super pleased with how this is turning out.

Any feedback is welcome!

Enjoy!

I have been experimenting with HDR through CS5. This is actually a single RAW image processed as a HDR.

For my birthday my wife got me a CS5 book by Martin Evening. Now I am a Kelby fanatic, but I must admit that this book is quite good. It is for the more advanced Photoshop user and goes into real good detail about setup and such.

Now I am normally not too into the "painterly" HDR look, BUT, I am seeing that it for a change of pace, some images it works nicely on.

Techy: Nikon D700, Nikon 14mm f/2.8, RAW image, processed ALL through CS5 with a splash of NIK.

Picked up a T-shirt with the Leopard 2A6 emblazoned across it, a DVD reference material package (LAV III next?) and a record on German AFV's that was printed in '69.

Oh, and my Leopard 2A6M CAN won the bronze award in "Tracked, Modern"! Not an easy task when every other model on display is an excellent kit that has been weathered and the like.

Needless to say, it was an excellent day :D

P.S. Why the poor photo quality? Because my macro optimised lens is somehow stuck on my camera and I can't figure out how to get it off. Guess I'll be taking a trip to my local techy soon.

I heard about these falls lately and eventually found my way to them. Compositions are limited by geography - it's a pretty steep gorge, and once you're past the safety fence it's a little shady.

Next time, which is likely to be next year, I'll maybe go to the other side and try and work my way down.

Techy stuff - I used a smaller aperture than usual here to increase the sunburst.

There are quite a few of these colourful geese at the Ifield Mill Pond. I am so fortunate to have this lovely place within walking distance ...

Not the finest of images I know, as my techy skills with this lens isn't that brilliant - however I try to make up with the more 'artistic' skills!

It’s March, snow has fallen and a damp fog shrouds the station at Banbury. A spare loco stands in the bay, little used these days but never abandoned because it's convenient for emergencies and so on. The red light is the signal for the northbound main line to Birmingham. Many years ago when the connection to the Banbury Branch for the GCR's London Extension was in place, this bay was used for the "Banbury Motor", the local service with Woodford & Hinton (later Woodford Halse) and the two small halts along the way. It's a relic of times when Banbury was a very busy junction station.

Best seen large.

Techy stuff: Loco is 25 154 in BR blue livery. March 1981. Ambient light, approximately 30-sec exposure with tripod-mounted OM-2 on Kodachrome. Scanned and green hue from the fluorescent lights reduced slightly.

This slightly unworldly post-processing is an effort to reproduce an effect that I achieved with the Palazzo Pubblico in Siena last year. Unfortunately, I seem not to have kept the intermediate file so I am trying to reproduce it from scratch. Almost there now. For the techies, I basically layer a monochrome copy at 50% and then a coloured copy with the "overlay" blend at about 30%, then adjust the curves. I'll automate most of this once I have it down.

I had no idea i had captured these people like this and the fact that the face is out of focus to me just adds to the depth of meaning in the picture. There is anonymity to what is otherwise a very public display of affection and concern and this shot doesn’t intrude - almost like those times you catch a part of someone else’s personal phone conversation and get the gist but without prying. I don't know what the people were talking about and I just ignored them at the time allowing them to get on with their day but when this one came back from processing I fell in love immediately.

On a techy geeky note I also love the blue cast my vintage lens and Ektar film combo provided. i think of this set as quite timeless in a way.

Sometimes these guys will just wander around and ignore you as you walk by other times they take flight quickly.

Seems like I am always On The Road Again. . . and though I like Willie's song, it was his long time harp player Mickey Raphael that got me blowing tunes. . . I am still learning. . .

I've been meaning to get out and photograph the parks in her winter clothes. I missed the last meetup with Charlotte because I was sick, but I was able to head out last night with the group to meet Matt Pasant. We had a great time hanging out and shooting at our leisure.

Since the techies were getting ready for the monstrous event that is New Years Eve at the Disneyland Resort, they had the castle lit in a lovely lavender with gold highlights. A welcome change from bubblegum pink. The hub was also completely dark, allowing for a silhouetted Walt and Mickey.

I hope all of you have a great time tonight and have a wonderful New Year!

.

Another round of auroras🌏 (surely you’re not tired of them yet… are you?) I don’t know why we saw so many in the span of a few days, when I barely saw one during my entire first mission, but these last ones came with something extra. As the Moon was high and bright, it lit up the clouds from above, which created a distinct atmosphere… and almost turned the aurora blue. What’s next, Mother Nature? A yellow one? A giant rainbow?🌈 And no, photo techies, the camera balance was set the same as for previous aurora pictures ‍♂️ An aurora under the full moon, what could be better?

Eclectic Botanical Art — a photo featuring a rather delightful swirl of flowers, crafted with a dash of intentional camera movement. Made with Artisitic Intuition, not AI.

Photography is about emotions, patience and perhaps a bit of luck — none of which you’ll find in a bunch of code. Sure, the AI might add some polish, but it can’t replace the human touch. So, while the techies keep tinkering, let’s remember that true photography is an art form that belongs to people, not machines.

Here is the capture I took of this techy apple, but here taken at shallow depth of field at f/4 versus the original post below at f/11.

Preferences ????

Last light of the day down in the valley is marvellous, especially as the field on the left is being tilled again.

Half an hour after the previous picture, the sun is lower and sunset tones are beginning to colour the sky. A Voyager is heading south, its clean metallic lines hugely photogenic. :)

From my archives - another of my sometimes fanciful ideas. It may miss the mark when it comes to techy camera stuff , but I hope it passes muster for artistic fun.

📍 Penryn

Here's something a little different from me to break up my coastal stuff...

I was on the way home, driving down Bohelland Rise, when I was presented with a misty view over Penryn. I was seconds from home, so I had to grab my long lens. After shooting a few frames of the town, I turned my attention to the horizon - near the A39.

I was struck by the graphic shapes of these silhouetted trees, and what I imagine is a phone mast (techies please correct me if I'm wrong) - maybe a couple of miles away from where I stood. I also liked the separation as the mist knocked back the more distant forms.

Straight off camera, the colours were a little underwhelming. So I used some artistic licence - and colour graded the crap out of it!

For me, after watching the latest Attenborough documentary on Netflix, this picture tells a story of humans' dominance over nature and our planet. Trees strive to outgrow their neighbours to capture as much sunlight as possible. Yet here, this man made structure dwarfs them all. Watch the documentary - it's an eye opener!

This popped up on my Google Photo's this morning. Exactly 10 years ago. Parking lot NS train station Den Haag Mariahoeve.

Honda Civic 8th generation. This was a tuesday. Working at AEGON Asset Management at the time. Great colleagues. Good times. :)

Today (2023-01-15, Sunday): 7 degrees Celcius. Still hoping to get some snow this year. :)

This car was very special. It actually wasn't that comfortable... lots of understeer, it was underpowered, beam rear suspension, the entire suspension was kind of jittery, the seat was too high and the airco was noisy. But the steering was super fast and fun and playstation like and the wheel was nice and small. The gear box was clickity-clack and the interior super techy. The seats had a suede/ alcantera techy material. Loved that machine and the deep red lacquer!

Yay I found my missing photos! thanks to my genius son who 'commandeered my laptop" from his house across town... he was able to see that I had created a new name on a folder that actually created a new folder and got Lightroom all confused...LOL I could NEVER survive this techy world without him!

Although this was shot in RAW, I didn't do anything except crop a bit of overexposed bokeh and added a frame obviously..

It's been a little while since my last upload, I have a backlog of images partly processed from this winters trips to finish and should be uploading quite regularly over the spring and summer months

This image was made last week in Fuerteventura, where I was hosting a workshop

One thing that struck me, on reflection, is the vastness of locations like this, it's completely different to my normal situation, where I have defined subjects and quite often limited angles to shoot from, I usually find myself fine tuning compositions. Here the compositions are endless and that in itself is quite daunting.

I finally had an opportunity to photograph the new Guardians overlay to the former Tower of Terror...At night, this is attraction is stunning...Daytime, it looks busy and techy, but those who remember ToT, can see right through the facade.

As amazing as this attraction looks at night, it is totally out of place with everything else in DCA...Visible from many angles in the park, it just looks weird, and like it doesn't belong.

The ride however, is amazingly fun and immersive. Much better than ToT ever was, with more movement that is unpredictable and more intense.

Manually blended HDR photo from 3 base images at ISO 200, f.11 (3 seconds, 13 seconds, & 30 seconds) plus 1 dedicated for the sky at ISO 400, 20 seconds, to prevent star stretching, and 1 intended to mask out two groups of people, ISO 400, 10 seconds.

Shot wide with Samyang / Rokinon 14mm, then corrected for distortion and cropped closer

My children swear by iPhone photography and don't see the need for any other 'gadget'. I was just wondering if you think this is true, or think it is an age thing, or something else and I would be interested to hear your thoughts?

"As far as lens is concerned, both iPhone and DSLRs would have minimal difference in the quality. Settings, thus play a vital role. iPhone uses a bionic processor that allows for faster capturing and processing of images, better low-light autofocus, improved pixel processing and better noise reduction in images."
