Find some old techie who, as I did, came of age, not only before the PC but before the scientific calculator. Don't ask him IF he still has his slide rule, because he certainly does. Instead, ask him how long it would take, starting sitting at his desk, to get it in hand. For me, the answer is 5 seconds. I never use it, but it's always there.
[My apologies to the women viewing this. The only reason I use "he" and "him" is because, back then, almost all techies were men. Happily, that's no longer true.]
Alex took me out to a suprise dinner at the Noodle Shop to present me with my engagement ring. We got all dressed up and had a lovely (and tasty!) dinner, after which he subtly got down on one knee and proposed again. It was all very mellow (thank you honey!) and nice. :)
This is to show you the scale of my engagement ring against the peridot Alex got me for Christmas a few years ago. It's tiny.

Take Aim: Old, Ancient, Antique
Not all that old in chronological years but certainly ancient in techie time... I keep this old fax/phone in the closet for occasions when someone insists that I fax something rather than take a more modern route. I just hook it up, fax away, then return it to the shelf - happened to have it out for just such an occasion this week. ;D

Well, I can't get to my techie bookshelf at the moment, so here's a virtual one that I put together in Delicious Library. I might just do some other themed bookshelves soon (travel is a big one, Egyptology is another)
If you live here in Dubai (or in one of the cities that GeekFest has been organized in before), you will probably be familiar with the techie festival that brings together for an evening people with an interest for all things geek. The Sharjah version of the festival has been a long time coming and it’s finally happening on Thursday, 22nd of March at Al Qasba. The unofficial head-geek, Alexander McNabb has kindly asked me again to run a workshop there and this time I will be focusing on shooting with post-processing in mind. If you have any particular questions or issues that you would like me to talk about just leave a comment below.
While we’re on the subject of post-processing, a couple of nights ago I decided to head out into the desert to shoot a few long-exposure images of the desert environment with some star trails in the background. I’m not 100% happy with the results as the ambient light was really strong and there was a lot of light wash, but I did get the shot below with which I’m fairly ok. It was a 10 minute long exposure and I did quite a bit of work on it in Photoshop playing with a few curves to increase the contrast on the leaves and change the overall sky colour tones to something more pleasing.
Oh and if you want to participate in a little debate I was having about removing the electricity pole (the one in the background on the left), I would love to know if you think it works there or if you think I should have removed it. I will reveal my opinion (which might surprise you!) in the comments.

The windows were large enough to sit in. We watched undocking from our room before heading up to the sun deck to watch the ship go under the bridge.

Remember how i said that the cheerleader photographers who hired me for the Massachusetts and Virgina jobs had a FLEET of laptops and printed pictures on-site? Well, they made a good profit off it, and i was thinking of doing something similar. Well, i saw on craiglist a camera that i bought as a gift for my parents. Whilst there, they asked me if i wanted to buy a laptop. They had 5 of them for the family-old machines built to run on Windows 95 and 98. They upgraded most of them to Windows XP, but they were selling them now (practically giving them away). I agreed to buy all 5 (one is broken) and got them for $125! (The 5th one was included for free). I had to borrow a bit, but it's worth it i think. My mum and brother each bought one, and the other two will be for the business
