Finally I am returning to join you again, and I will be posting for a few weeks, as I promised. This time we will see new photos of Italy and France from my archives: photos taken for the most part on my last two trips to Europe which will include Paris, southern France, Venice and Florence. Here I am on the beach in Nice along the French Riviera, all bundled up against the cold. It was February, and very chilly!

Infrared photography uses the infrared wavelength part of the Electromagnetic spectrum to record images rather than the visible wavelength part. Don't ask me to give techie details of the wavelengths involved (you can find this easy enough on the internet or on an infrared flickr group). The typical characteristics of such shots in B&W film are glowing white foliage and almost black water and sky (depending on the levels of sunlight), high contrast, tricky focusing (due to different focal distances). In colour film you get bright red foliage and other unexpected colours. Digital photography has allowed infrared to 'go crazy' with endless bizarre colour manipulations possible and crystal sharpness. Infrared can be achieved via the use of an opaque filter (blocks out visible light but lets infrared light pass) added to the front of your lens or by the use of a digital camera that has been 'converted' for use in infrared. A conversion renders the camera unable to take normal visible light images - so it becomes dedicated to infrared. It is worth it though because it means no more tripods, opaque filters, long exposure times and difficult focusing.
Here's my other cat, Alabama, or ... the cat from hell. You'd never know, looking at this picture. She managed to dig under the afghan on my bed, all by herself, and just be endearing. Actually, we've both been watching Jackson Galaxy's "Cat from Hell" program on Animal Planet the last week or so, and have discovered the bad behavior is all mine. I've been making some changes, added $100 of new toys, and she and Whitney are now both enjoying lots of playtime. In fact, through hard play, Allie has actually already destroyed two kitty teasers - she hangs on REALLY hard. The Jackson Galaxy brand toys are holding up well, and in fact, the chaser tease is the favorite of both cats. Techie note: Canon flash with Gary Fong diffuser. I love that thing.

This was my Red Cross then shopping outfit. The skirt has built in shorts, but my Red Cross techie held a blanket in the way while I climbed off the lounge chair.
Yes the lighting is a bit crap, but it's lighting with a point. The lighting was triggered by the board you see above... So I guess it deserves some strobist info :-)
Strobist info: Lit from above by hand held Vivitar 283 with 24mm adapter attached at 64th power. 16 microsecond quench time.
Flash fired and quenched by the board you see above. If you look really close you can see the electrons flowing in the right hand (sync) optoisolator :o)
The board is a Jeenode(V4) which is based on the ATmega328p microcontroller. Programmed in C with Arduino 0018 beta. The sync/quench routine is written with direct port access instead of the Arduino library calls as they are far too slow for the kind of response and timing accuracy I require for firing and quenching a flash in 32microseconds (That's approx 1/32 power) or faster.
Triggered via a similar board attached to the hotshoe of my D300.
You just wait until you see that one... With its LCD display and full menu/config system :-)

Well, old technology -- circa 1980's -- but techie enough for today's Daily Shoot:
Illustrate something technological in a photograph today.
What you're looking at is a small section of an MCC (multi-chip carrier) that was taken from a decommissioned Amdahl V6 mainframe computer where I worked in the mid 80's. The MCC has 41 of these processor chip/cooling tower combos on it, and each tower measures about 1/2 inch tall. What's really crazy about the MCC is that the back of the board is hand-wired, with hundreds, if not thousands, of individual wires connecting the various components. Maybe I'll post a picture of all of that spaghetti one of these days. ;-)

Strobist: I made a "light tent" with a bronze tinted reflector to the right, and a piece of white foamboard angled over the top. I bounced light from my Canon 430EX, full power, 105mm zoom, off of the reflector (and then off of the foam) to provide indirect lighting over the MCC board. Triggered with Cactus remote.
