This is my first attempt at working with an alternative process. As I later found out, I started with a "difficult" photo so it took some trial and error to figure out the exposures and the digital negative. It all worked out in the end. I learned a lot so next one will be much easier and less time consuming.
Techie stuff: This photo of a shop-window detail was taken with a Holga 120WPC pinhole camera. Arches HP 140 lb watercolor paper was sensitized using Formulary liquid cyanotype solutions. The exposure, under a UV light box was about 8.5 minutes. After developing in water the photo was dipped into a weak hydrogen peroxide solution to make the blues pop.
In the Sharpless catalogue as SH2-206. Sometimes called the Fossil Footprint Nebula.
This is an emission nebula just under 11,000 light years away in the constellation of Perseus.
HII regions of space such as this are formed when the ultraviolet radiation generated by hot stars ionizes the surrounding gas, causing it to glow in the visible light.
You often hear tell that stars are made from dust & gas, well the dust is also affected by this radiation too. The radiation makes the dust glow in the infrared light.
Boring techie bit.

OH!! GO ME!!!!!! I DID it! I used CS5 and did not blow up my computer....or lose everything on it! I am SO proud of me.....yes, inept, non techie, can’t find my way out of a paper bag, blond me! (OK...so my hair is darker than it was, blond is really a state of mind!!) Hmmm, maybe it is because i put a little red in it....redheads are pretty smart i hear!!
OK....sooooo, i made my own pink gradient, and applied it. then i deedled around with the opacity and such....then i added another layer of black to white gradient and deedled with that and then i added a text layer and i made the text have a sort of faint reflection behind the words of the same words..........Damn!! i am SO tickled that i was able to navigate CS5 without blowing my head off!!!
Pardon me while i do a little “I am so proud of me dance" for a teensy minute!!!

OK...i am back...you did not miss much in the dance department....i am really bad at that too! (but better than singing!)
I am in a much better frame of mind than i was with all the raindrop tears last night. I went to my "inside me" place... i pondered and i prayed. I got about 3 hours sleep, so i was anticipating a long and rather crummy monday since i had to go in at 9:00 and stay all day with the eels and the vicious beasty child. It actually went really well with the little fellow i was in charge of for the morning....the beasty child had an issue and tried to bolt, but i managed to get between her and the door so she was stuck in the classroom! 4 more days and counting......the ocean and beach never looked so much like Paradise as it does right now. OK...i lied...........it ALWAYS looks like paradise to me!!
Have a fantabulous Tuesday....................and YAY ME!!!!!! CS5 here i come!! i am smarter than i thought.............maybe!!! What’s different in CS6, Larry?? do i NEED the upgrade!???

Ooo look at me getting all techie :)
For absolutely yonks I have wanted to create an image with a light-leak. According to Wiki:
"A light leak is a hole or gap in the body of a camera where light is able to "leak" into the normally light-tight chamber, exposing the film or sensor with extra light. This light is diffuse, although parts within the camera may cast shadows or reflect it in a particular way. For most purposes this is considered a problem. Within the lomography movement it is seen as a positive effect, giving photos character.
One frequent source of light leaks in 35 mm cameras is around the film door due to degrading foam. Replacing the foam is a simple matter. Medium format system cameras or large format cameras may have leaks between their various interchangeable parts or in old leather bellows. Electrical tape is often used to repair light leaks in these cases."
So, I tried a couple of websites to get the gist of how to do it. Check over the image for links. Currently I am a whole lot more Lightroom girl than I am Photoshop girl, so I did mine in LR.
I'm pleased with the result- I also remembered something I saw Rosie Hardy say on a tutorial she posted a while ago that she hated green in a picture and opted more for brown/warmer spectrum shades. So, whilst I don't hate green (though Peas are green) I tried to give a more washed out, vintage look to the image reminiscent of film.
This was on Sunday at Shakerley Mere. Despite dogs not being allowed in the water, Reuben still chased the geese- it was pretty funny.
What wasn't funny is the amount of bites I got on my legs (I do have tights on too!) so bad I had an allergic reaction!! Boo :(
Here is a song that fits the mood that I can't get enough of at the moment.
PERHAPS THE BEST SUMMARY I heard in relation to the impact of Steve Jobs came from a Canadian journalist who summed up Steve Jobs life with the techie term, 'disruptive innovation'.
Through that 'disruption' Steve changed the world for the better.
iTunes, the iPod, the iPhone, the iPad, the iMac, etc ~
I certainly don't do Windoze…
THAT SAID, all was not well with the much-ballyhooed man who was synonymous with Apple Inc.
In the end our habits own us, and we shouldn't be too surprised that Steve's habit of inter-personal severity owned him, and the resentful petulant man who was forever upset with underlings that failed to impress, but more so upset by being put up for adoption as a baby, later refused every opportunity for amends to be made by the once offending, now, contrite.
Through the years, Steve nursed his rage against his biological father.
Steve did forgive his birth mother for the great heave-ho, and later acknowledged a daughter he too initially rejected—but forgiving an aging father with outstretched arms proved to be too much, too overwhelming for the fastidious nerd who changed the world. And who—eventually learned to take regular showers.
Still, I guess being surrounded by paid accolades who bow to your every whim at 1 Cupertino Loop can set one up with a false dichotomy, whereby your petty personal viewpoint is always right, and the whole rest of the world is terribly wrong.
Except, Steve's father, John Jandali, wasn't another computer or software brand, he was, well—his father.
The man who gave Steve life.
Yeah, that guy.
Whatever false, morally relative construct Steve used—throughout the long years—to shield himself emotionally from his father, will, happily, never replace that seemingly innocuous and obvious command to honour one's father and mother. And with that eternal directive, came the general, temporal promise, of a long life.
Or could it be, as it is in most cases where father-son, father-daughter estrangement occurs, the divorced/separated/offended mother fuels the on-going separation and hostility of her offspring—against their biological father. I do not mean Clara Jobs here. I mean Joanne Carole Schieble, Steve's biological mom.
Or was it a tandem thing? Mother and daughter (Mona Simpson) against John Jandali? This is also often the case.
Steve, and his biological sister Mona (the other offspring of John and Joanne) became best friends after having not known each other until their late 20s. Such can be the fall-out from adoption, and disappearing into the night. After their brother-sister relationship solidified, Mona encouraged Steve to reach out to their mother, now Joanne Schieble Simpson, and Steve later invited Joanne to some Apple events. Mona paved the way for Steve to reconcile with mom, Joanne. However, Joanne had likely so sabotaged Mona and John's continued relationship, from the earliest of times, that the foundation had already been laid for Steve to later follow suit. And so, he too, joined with Mona in rejecting father John.
Good one, Joanne. Good one, Mona.
Divorced fathers this is likely the most famous example you will ever have, of the effects of the negative power-play, your former spouse can exert over your mutual offspring.
If its a stormy break, she'll turn the kids against you. Forever.
It's her one final way to hurt you.
Hurt, unstable mothers, are working behind the scenes, sabotaging your chances to keep an ongoing relationship with your son or daughter. The provincial family courts in Ontario, Canada are quite wise to the potential for this extended Mommie-dearist tactic and strongly encourage mediation.
Courts elsewhere—not so much~
Steve Jobs: Incredible visionary! Spectacular inventor!
Good son?
Lousy son.
Well, two out of three, ain't bad.
Closing off a homily one Sunday at Mass, I remember one of our parish priests noting, that whatever disasters befall us—short of death—we never did have the right to expect perfect parents.
But apparently, Steve did.
Good-bye, Steve.
Thanks for the presents.
Your dad never had your presence, but he has one of your iPads. And he lined up like everyone else to get one.
Roll that image through the theatre of your mind, folks.
The closest John Jandali (Steve Job's father) was able to get to his son—was to buy one of his son's products—from one of said son's stores.
ABSOLUTELY disgusting. Monumentally saddening.
While Steve Jobs, being a Buddhist, never had access to the treasure trove of Christian admonishment to act otherwise, still the moral law is written on the hearts of all men—even those outside of the influence of Christian revelation.
Still, Jobs loved the Beatles, and he should have, at least, listened to them.
"For well you know that it's a fool who plays it cool
By making his world a little colder"
(Hey Jude)
How many letters and postcards from father John Jandali (through the years), went unanswered, Steve?
I hope someone in the Jobs or Simpson family will FINALLY take the high road and reach out to John Jandali, Steve's estranged (not-by-choice) father in these, his twilight years.
But since we're dealing with Buddhists and pagans here—don't hold your breath.
You can't reason with pagans.
The world may praise Steve Jobs all they want. And he certainly deserves their praise—for the amazing Apple products that were brought to fruition under his leadership—for those eager, and consuming masses.
But, and there is always a but… Steve's final denial of his father, even from his deathbed, certainly gives me, great pause~

It's alive, and it's got a name!
Meet Flash'ard :-)
There is some logic to the name, I doubt I need to explain the first part, but the "Ard"? Well it's based on Arduino. In this case it's a wonderful little board called a Jeenode(V4), which comes complete with the wireless module I need to make a remote trigger.
Anyway, it works, and it's now providing lighting for it's own photographs. Currently max sync speed is 1/160th, but I'm working on getting that up higher.
The board has two optoislator triacs (the little white chips with 6 pins each) which keeps the delicate 3.3 volt circuit safe from the 300 volt trigger circuit on the Vivitar 283. It has two isolators because it is connected into two circuits on the flash. One that fires it (which is what a hotshoe trigger fires) and one that stops it (called the quench). Controlling the timing between sending the "Fire" and the "Quench" allows you to regulate the power of the flash. I believe all flashes work like this. When you drop the power you don't turn down the brightness, you're reducing the duration of the flash. (Whether you can get to the quench circuit or not is another issue entirely though!).
A full power 1/1 flash is about 1300us (micro seconds, there's a million of them to a second), a 1/32 is about 30us.
Close up of the board: www.flickr.com/photos/steve_snaps/4567175228/
Update
Sync speed now up to 1/320th, the limit of my D300. This was achieved by increasing the baudrate of the wireless data communications, so has also reduced the range. I am currently testing to see how this will impact the functionality. If it does impact it then I can slow it down a few steps before it come down to the level it was at when 1/160th was the limit.
Thanks to this up and coming DJ who offered to have his shot taken in Leake Street graffiti tunnel underneath Waterloo Station. He was having a break from a professional shoot at the time.....
So this is my take - hope Ali is pleased with the result.
Thanks Ali and his photographer - appreciated.

The view from a crofters cottage we stayed in. Rubbish isn't it.
Boring techie details
Comprises 12 shots using Sigma 10-20mm. Each raw file was processed with Photomatix as a single file HDR, then stitched in photoshop. Having played with single file HDR a few times now I'm very pleased with the results. I originally shot three exposures for each section of the panorama but it was too breezy and the ghosting artifacts in the grass made a mess of it all. Still this seems to work quite nicely.
