Review Gemma Langdon in India Jaipur Teaching Program September 2014.

"Volunteering for a project in India is one of the most valuable experiences you will ever gain. I was teaching in a school that is under resourced and underprivileged in comparison to schools in UK but once you get into it and look past that you will see children who are just adorable! Their eagerness to learn is overwhelming, the children can literally not wait to see the books or resources I had brought and looked over these repeatedly. Yes the project was challenging, both mentally and physically, but anything worth doing never comes easily! The people here are amazing and I can almost guarantee that although your project has come to an end you yourself will not be ready to leave”

As a Communication Studies major, much of my time at Clemson has been spent on the 4th floor of Daniel Hall. No day of classes would be complete without a trip to this building.

Day 44 - Teaching

Teaching is always something I have enjoyed doing. When I was doing Music full time, I used to take on students (usually from Middle School age) and teach them how to play their respected instruments of choice. It was a lot of fun and rewarding. Now that I am doing photography, I enjoy teaching people how to understand and take photographs.

When my friend Jackie came to me last week asking about photography, I couldn’t resist offering to help her out beyond the simple “What camera should I buy?” advice. She is one of those super creative people who has done vocal performance, cosmetology, painting, writing, drawing, and now is a Fashion Designer. She wants to take up photography so she can create her own vision with her designs. It’s just one of the many facets of Jackie. So I had her come over today and began teaching her photography from the beginning. It was a lot of fun and good for me having to describe how each thing works. You really realize how much you know or don’t know about something when you start teaching it. I also showed her my lighting kit and how to set everything up. She is hopefully going to be assisting me on upcoming shoots so she can learn as much as possible.

Interestingly enough, this photograph for today was when we were outside going over one of the lights and C-Stands. It wasn’t adding much to the exposure, but what I did learn is that she is very shy and doesn’t like being in front of cameras. In almost every frame I took, she would not look into the camera. It was as if the camera was going to steal part of her soul (haha). This is actually not the first time I have heard this from people who want to be photographers, or are already. Some people are just better behind the lens than in front.

Enjoy

In June 2018, The Gardens at Texas A&M University celebrated the completion of its first phase: The Leach Teaching Gardens. These seven acres serve as an outdoor classroom where faculty and staff can teach students and the public about food production, landscape beauty, and the natural environment. The Gardens as a whole is meant to be a peaceful sanctuary on campus, a place where everyone at Texas A&M and in our community can relax, enjoy nature, and learn

Teaching 4-H kids at work- some of them get it, some of them don't. Some take it to extremes. This kid is taking a photo of the contrasting purple and yellow flowers, but even better, he also shot it up and got the building out of my shot in it as well. He (and others) do me proud.

The kids how to paint with light while we were waiting for the fireworks to begin! They found this fascinating! :) Ok, so my son found this fascinating, my daughter did it once and said I'm done and then watched her brother do it! hehehehehe

A small, brief exhibition of work done by my bookarts students this term. The theme was music, and they spent the first 6 weeks of term learning letterpress and then the next few weeks playing with stuff they'd printed.

This program introduced the audience to the storytelling element of Bharatnatyam, the 2000 year old Indian dance. Teaching-artist Surapsari expresses multiple characters through her facial expressions, movement, poses, and symbolic hand gestures called mudra. The stories are usually taken from popular Hindu myths and epics. Nava Rasa (the nine fundamental emotions) was explored through lively enactment of storytelling in dazzling costume.
