An airborne early warning and control (AEW&C) system is an airborne radar early warning system designed to detect aircraft, ships, vehicles, missiles and other incoming projectiles at long ranges, as well as performing command and control of the battlespace in aerial engagements by informing and directing friendly fighter and attack aircraft. AEW&C units are also used to carry out aerial surveillance over ground and maritime targets, and frequently perform battle management command and control (BMC2). When used at altitude, the radar system on AEW&C aircraft allows the operators to detect, track and prioritize targets and identify friendly aircraft from hostile ones in real-time and from much farther away than ground-based radars.[1] Like ground-based radars, AEW&C systems can be detected and targeted by opposing forces, but due to aircraft mobility and extended sensor range, they are much less vulnerable to counter-attacks than ground systems.[2]

AEW&C aircraft are used for both defensive and offensive air operations, and serve air forces in the same role as what the combat information center is to naval warships, in addition to being a highly mobile and powerful radar platform. So useful and advantageous is it to have such aircraft operating at a high altitude, that some navies also operate AEW&C aircraft for their warships at sea, either coastal- or carrier-based and on both fixed-wing and rotary-wing platforms. In the case of the United States Navy, the Northrop Grumman E-2 Hawkeye AEW&C aircraft is assigned to its supercarriers to protect them and augment their onboard command information centers (CICs). The designation "airborne early warning" (AEW) was used for earlier similar aircraft used in the less-demanding radar picket role,[3] such as the Fairey Gannet AEW.3 and Lockheed EC-121 Warning Star, and continues to be used by the RAF for its Sentry AEW1, while AEW&C (airborne early warning and control) emphasizes the command and control capabilities that may not be present on smaller or simpler radar picket aircraft. AWACS (Airborne Warning and Control System) is the name of the specific system installed in the American Boeing E-3 Sentry and Japanese Boeing E-767 AEW&C airframes, but is often used as a general synonym for AEW&C.[4][5]

General characteristics

Modern AEW&C systems can detect aircraft from up to 400 km (220 nmi) away, well out of range of most surface-to-air missiles (SAM). One AEW&C aircraft flying at 9,000 m (30,000 ft) can cover an area of 312,000 km2 (120,000 sq mi). Three such aircraft in overlapping orbits can cover the whole of Central Europe.[6] AEW&C system indicates close and far proximity range on threats and targets, help extend the range of their sensors, and make offensive aircraft harder to track by avoiding the need for them to keep their own radar active, which the enemy can detect. Systems also communicate with friendly aircraft, vectoring fighters towards hostile aircraft or any unidentified flying object (UFO).

I was surprised with the skies parted on Saturday it was supposed to be cloudy all day long. Our first snow of the year will arrive later today with 1-3 inches. Something worth photographing :) Five exposure HDR processed with Nik HDR Efex Pro 2

Key System articulated Bridge Car 177 (Bethlehem Steel 1937) running @ Oakland, Ca.

Kodachrome my collection, photographer unknown. (Jan. 1957)*

The canal system in England dates primarily from the late 1700s to the first part of the 1800s, and then railways began to take over their original task of moving heavy goods. The Lancaster Canal was originally intended to help supply Lancaster with coal from the Yorkshire coalfields, but it was never completed. Like most other canals, it is now used primarily for leisure purposes. On the right is a former canal pleasure boat that has been converted to a home. The bridge in the background is one of many on this canal that date from the mid-1790s. They are all Grade II-listed as being of historical or architectural significance.

One of my most intense experiences.

This place is located on a peak of Apls. It wasn't a rational decision to climb this snow mountain without any clear path at night. After I reached halfway and then realized it is just impossible to keep going on, but it's also too dangerous to go back. I was stuck in the middle and for the first time felt extremely desperate. It ends up with I slipped down by accident for over 10 meters. Bruises and scratches all over my body are evidence of the insanity of that night.

This place is epic, but for sure I won't risk myself doing something like this again.

I posted this image before, but was inspired to redo it when I came up with the clever title. :)

Once again, I used the new Nik software (as well as CS6), and am really quite pleased with the results.

To see the original image Click Here.

After finishing the lessons in Scott Kelby's "7-Point System for Adobe Photoshop CS3", I had to go back and revisit some of my older stuff.

I started with this JPG image, adjusted the foreground using Camera RAW and then made another image in Camera RAW and adjusted the sky.

I merged the two images in Photoshop and then darkened the sky, lightened the foreground, desaturated the blues and yellows a tad, etc.

It's not remotely realistic. The sky is pretty dark for an image that's looking right at the sun.

Oh... and if it looks familiar, it's because I did another HDR Version months ago.

This image features the southeast wall of a small crater located a few hundred kilometres to the north of the giant Hellas impact basin on Mars. The complete crater itself is about 12 km in diameter; this image shows a 5 x 10 km area.

The Colour and Stereo Surface Imaging System (CaSSIS) onboard the ExoMars Trace Gas Orbiter took the image on 19 October 2020.

When viewed with CaSSIS’ colour filters, the image shows exceptional diversity in colour. This diversity is related to the presence of various minerals that reflect light differently at different wavelengths. The light-toned deposits highlight the bedrock exposures of the area, which probably contain ancient clay-rich minerals that would have formed in the presence of water. Also visible are wind-blown sandy deposits that form ripples on the floor of the crater. Their distinctive tan colour implies that they contain iron-oxide minerals.

This build is my first major build for about a year and a half, so diving back into my hobby I chose to build something have much affection for: a racer from the racing game series Wipeout. I've built several Wipeout racers before, but since the latest addition Wipeout 2048 I've been dying to recreate one of the sleek ships that blend present-day racecars with the futuristic ships of the previous Wipeout games. However, only recently have I acquired enough red pieces to tackle a build of such scale. I wanted to include custom decals for the sponsors and logos on the ship, but being a purist I opted for strictly brick-built details.

This is an APS-H photo shot on Fujifilm APS Nexia A200 using a Yashica Profile 4000iX camera.

I did this because all the equipment involved was cheap and easy to get, but it sucked. It wasn't worth it. Here's my blog post about it.
