Synthesis,

With Tom Burns and G.M. Stalker on my mind.

The Westerbork Synthesis Radio Telescope (WSRT) is an aperture synthesis interferometer built on the site of the former World War II Nazi detention and transit camp Westerbork, north of the village of Westerbork, Midden-Drenthe, in the northeastern Netherlands.

This is a synthesis of two photos taken by me. The first one is a little beautiful figurine exhibit, which is presented in the Aiane or Aiani Archaeological Museum, near Kozani city, west Macedonia, Greece. The second is a photo of a painting, taken and edited by me. It is a work of Vangelis Gokas in the context of the exhibition “omnia caritatis”, in Athens, Greece.

The pictured exhibit of the clay figurine is a find, showed at the archaeological site of Aiane, an important cultural heritage, consisting of the ancient city and its magnificent cemetery. There are some information about the site at: www.gtp.gr/TDirectoryDetails.asp?ID=14528

The ancient Greeks used clay to make little statuettes, or more properly figurines. Terracotta figurines were manufactured throughout Antiquity, from the Neolithic to the Roman period.

The ancient figurines are characterized by a wonderful diversity. They usually represent gods, heroes, mythical beings, humans and animals, either singly or in groups. The surface of the clay is very often painted with vivid colors, which render the details and heighten the decorative effect.

Figurines are found in excavations of sanctuaries graves and houses. In sanctuaries, they were presented as votive offerings to the deity. In graves they were deposited as grave goods, which are personal objects belonging to the deceased and gifts accompanying him or her to the next world. In the home, they were used either as dolls and toys or for devotional purposes In the family shrine.

The earliest figurines were fashioned by hand, but the technique of the mould was invented as early as the geometric period. Subsequently both techniques were used concurrently, with one often complementing the other.

The Archaeological Museum of Aiani displays the history of ancient Aiani, capital of Elimiotis which was one of the most important kingdoms of Upper Macedonia.

Important collections include finds of the Late Bronze Age (1500 -1200 BC) and the Archaic and Classical periods (600 -500 BC), which provide an important insight into the formation of the Doric-Macedonian peoples in the region and the civilian and political development of Aiani, particularly during the Sixth Century B.C.

The exhibition omnia caritatis is a selective flashback to the painting by Vangelis Gokas. It includes paintings from the last decade, focusing mainly on his recent work, a series of large-scale charcoal drawings. Studies, drafts and oils on postcards are also presented. As a whole, the exhibition attempts to show the evolutionary course, the personal idiom and the obsessions of the painter. The images of Vangelis Gokas -especially in his latest drawings- exude a sense of peace and reverence.

Vangelis Gokas was born in Korinthos, Greece in 1969. He holds a BA in Fine Arts from the Aristotle University of Thesaloniki, Greece and two Masters degrees in Fine Arts from the Athens School of Fine Arts and the School of Fine Arts in Barcelona, Spain. To date he has had seven solo exhibitions and has participated in numerous group shows both in Greece and abroad, including the Athens Biennale of 2011. Works of his form part of important private and museum collections including the Van AbbeMuseum in Eindhoven. Gokas is currently assistant professor at the School of Plastic Arts of Ioannina, Greece.

Branches stretching toward the sun, these canyon live oaks are colossi of their kind. Most of the oaks sport multiple trunks; each a couple of feet in diameter. The trunks spread out almost level to the ground before turning skyward. Their canopies form huge domes. The oak branches weave and bend in a slow, intimate dance in search of light.

Abundant sunshine, undimmed by other trees, fuels the growth and longevity of these great, old oak trees.

"Outstanding Universal Value

"Brief synthesis

"Located in the Occitanie region, the Pont du Gard is the major element of a 50.02 km aqueduct built in the middle of the 1st century to supply the city of Nîmes, the ancient Roman colony of Nemausus, from the Eure source located near Uzès. A three-storey aqueduct bridge rising to nearly 48.77 m, it enabled the water conduit to cross the Gardon River.

"This triple bridge, whose longest floor, at the very top of the edifice, measured 360 m, is a feat and a masterpiece of Roman architectural technique, but also a work of art whose presence transfigures the landscape. Set in a natural site that enhances its imposing appearance and its lines of force, the Pont du Gard rests on a rocky base, notched by the river spanned by its major arch. The gentle and symmetrical tapering of the arches, the span of the lower arches and the regularity of the upper gallery give it an extraordinarily airy appearance for a work of such magnitude.

"The Pont du Gard is an outstanding example of bridges built in ancient times. It achieves a triple performance with its three levels of arches of unequal dimensions and is characterized by the use, for the construction of the arches of the lower levels, of juxtaposed rollers composed of voussoirs bearing engraved positioning marks. In the series of Roman aqueducts, this exceptional edifice is the result of an extensive adaptation to the river regime of the Gardon whose floods are sudden and devastating. The lips installed in front of the piers are designed to resist high water, and the opening of the principal lower arch (24.52 m instead of 21.87 m for the arches of the extremes) facilitates the flow of water.

"Built, on the first two levels, of large stone blocks and, at the upper level, of small stone rubble which hold the abutting flagstones of the canal, the Pont du Gard is one of the most revealing monuments as to the construction processes of the early Imperial era. Ma chambre a la forme d'une cage

Le soleil passe son bras par la fenêtre

Les chasseurs à ma porte

Comme les petits soldats

Qui veulent me prendre

Me rend malade

Je ne veux pas travailler

Je ne veux pas déjeuner

Je veux seulement l'oublier

Et puis je fume

Je ne suis pas fière de ça

Vie qui veut me tuer

C'est magnifique être sympathique

Mais je n'le connais jamais

Je ne veux pas travailler, non

Je ne veux pas déjeuner

Je veux seulement l'oublier

Et puis je fume

Je n'suis pas fière de ça

Vie qui veut me tuer

C'est magnifique être sympathique

Mais je n'le connais jamais

Je ne veux pas travailler, non

Je ne veux pas déjeuner

Je veux seulement l'oublier

Et puis je fume

Pea in a bottle.

Well what to do for Macro Mondays Green theme?

Seriously. How should I know?

Now I could say that I was resolved to create a graphic artwork of profound relevance and artistry by using clever compositional devices (repeated circles, subtle green tones, bokeh, whatever) and for contrast I intentionally juxtaposed (don’t you just love the sound of that word?) the organic and the inorganic…

Or I could admit this was the first and, worse, the only thing I thought of because… well, both were green weren’t they?

And they say a good photograph conveys a narrative, a story for the viewer to create in their own minds… Well if you can think of a story with a pea and a beer bottle you are doing considerably better than I am. All is lost (as I have suspected for some while now).

MM is probably full of green bottles today; I haven’t dared check. But here, in any case, is my offering born of viridian desperation :)

The neck of the bottle is 1 inch across, and the pea is... a bit smaller ;)

Thank you for taking the time to look. I hope you enjoy the image! Happy Macro Mondays :)

[Set on a tabletop in my dining room imaging studio. Back lit with one LED torch; some fill-in light from the front with another (but I quite liked the high contrast effect so very little of the latter in this version).

Tripod; remote release; LiveView focus; VR off to reduce vibration.

All the developing and processing in Affinity Photo.

Because of the very high dynamic range I used an HDR merge of 12 images all at f40 with varying shutter speeds. This got detail into the highlights and the dark bits.

No real play with colour… Sharpened using Unsharp Mask, square crop to emphasise the circles, dark vignette to deemphasise the edges, a bit of cleaning up of stray pixels and that was it :)]
