Taken on the Dyssini Estuary, Tywyn, Wales. Quite a distance away, hence not as clear as I would have liked.

These weird-looking birds with oversize body and small head are called guineafowl (sometimes called guineahen). They belong to a family of birds in the same order as the pheasants, turkeys and other game birds and are native to Africa. They feed on insects and seed; are ground-nesting birds.

Amazing Tonia Couch and Sarah Barrow in the middle of synchronized diving

At a friend's house last night, our daughters enjoying a late summer swim.

A pair of brown-headed cowbirds having a drink at the heated water bowl in the yard.

The pond froze over and this will be the water source for the rest of the winter.

In winter, Brown-headed Cowbirds may join huge roosts with several blackbird species. One such mixed roost in Kentucky contained more than five million birds.

Now this actually looks synchronized. Often they all assume the same position. Truly cooperative feeding.

Freddie and Katie having just watched synchronized diving on the Olympics were inspired to do this tail thing.

And yes, Melanie, your sharp eye did pick out that little piece of the shy Kate's tail in a recent pic. Congrats.

Tonight the glorious sky was a backdrop from any location chosen on this refuge. The constantly changing sky colors and bird formations filled out the images. Evenings here are usually truly special! The ear candy equals the quality of the eye candy... these guys are constantly chattering! Tonight the sky was especially glorious and the birds were numerous. These birds are committed to landing on the small lake we're watching. They are wheeling around on their final approach and one bird has its landing gear already deployed.
