Once you make these moves, once you start to open yourself to that you fear, the synchronicities start to come in, a divine force starts to open up before you and life starts to fulfil itself. But only, generally only if you’re not selfish, if you’re in service to others - then things all work out. The moment you’re trying to figure out what you can do for you, then everything becomes complicated, nothing falls together. But if we learnt that once we’re in service to others that the universe provides everything that you could possibly need without you needing to figure it out yourself - that’s the big moment that humanity takes a leap in the divine on planet earth.

The BMW Oracle America's Cup USA Tour visiting San Francisco. What fun! April, 15, 2010.

This is another image I was able to nab after a quick change of prime lenses, while shooting up at Battery Spencer in the present-day Marin Headlands section of the Golden Gate National Recreation Area in Marin County, California.

As seen through the Golden Gate Bridge, this was before the sailboats headed out to sea. You can see the San Francisco fireboat Phoenix, which docks under the San Francisco Bay Bridge at its station on the Embarcadero. They don't make such a salute everyday or for any ship's visit. Fleet Week is a good time to see the ships of San Francisco, also.

Note: Yes, I know the image is inverted. Haha, just screwed up in the scanner!

Another suburban 'Bell is closing

Grandma saw the writing on the wall

We have to shout above the din of crispy tacos

Brother'll eat everything and all

No worries Grandma, you can see a new Bell is rising at 1117 Main St., next to the retiring one at 979 Main. I know, that's 2 city blocks between numbers for buildings right next to each other, go figure!

Anyway, here's the 2nd very interesting thing I found on this early September 2012 TB visit:

2) New curbing was being installed, linking up with the existing curbing, therefore adjoining the old parking lot to the new. Hmmmm, they wouldn't be doing this if they were planning on demolishing the old 'Bell, would they? To me, this is evidence pointing to the strong possibility the old Mission style building will only be decommissioned as a Taco Bell and not turned to dust after all!

The Noble Eightfold Path describes the way to the end of suffering, as it was laid out by Siddhartha Gautama. It is a practical guideline to ethical and mental development with the goal of freeing the individual from attachments and delusions; and it finally leads to understanding the truth about all things. Together with the Four Noble Truths it constitutes the gist of Buddhism. Great emphasis is put on the practical aspect, because it is only through practice that one can attain a higher level of existence and finally reach Nirvana. The eight aspects of the path are not to be understood as a sequence of single steps, instead they are highly interdependent principles that have to be seen in relationship with each other.

1. Right View

Right view is the beginning and the end of the path, it simply means to see and to understand things as they really are and to realise the Four Noble Truth. As such, right view is the cognitive aspect of wisdom. It means to see things through, to grasp the impermanent and imperfect nature of worldly objects and ideas, and to understand the law of karma and karmic conditioning. Right view is not necessarily an intellectual capacity, just as wisdom is not just a matter of intelligence. Instead, right view is attained, sustained, and enhanced through all capacities of mind. It begins with the intuitive insight that all beings are subject to suffering and it ends with complete understanding of the true nature of all things. Since our view of the world forms our thoughts and our actions, right view yields right thoughts and right actions.

2. Right Intention

While right view refers to the cognitive aspect of wisdom, right intention refers to the volitional aspect, i.e. the kind of mental energy that controls our actions. Right intention can be described best as commitment to ethical and mental self-improvement. Buddha distinguishes three types of right intentions: 1. the intention of renunciation, which means resistance to the pull of desire, 2. the intention of good will, meaning resistance to feelings of anger and aversion, and 3. the intention of harmlessness, meaning not to think or act cruelly, violently, or aggressively, and to develop compassion.

3. Right Speech

Right speech is the first principle of ethical conduct in the eightfold path. Ethical conduct is viewed as a guideline to moral discipline, which supports the other principles of the path. This aspect is not self-sufficient, however, essential, because mental purification can only be achieved through the cultivation of ethical conduct. The importance of speech in the context of Buddhist ethics is obvious: words can break or save lives, make enemies or friends, start war or create peace. Buddha explained right speech as follows: 1. to abstain from false speech, especially not to tell deliberate lies and not to speak deceitfully, 2. to abstain from slanderous speech and not to use words maliciously against others, 3. to abstain from harsh words that offend or hurt others, and 4. to abstain from idle chatter that lacks purpose or depth. Positively phrased, this means to tell the truth, to speak friendly, warm, and gently and to talk only when necessary.

4. Right Action

The second ethical principle, right action, involves the body as natural means of expression, as it refers to deeds that involve bodily actions. Unwholesome actions lead to unsound states of mind, while wholesome actions lead to sound states of mind. Again, the principle is explained in terms of abstinence: right action means 1. to abstain from harming sentient beings, especially to abstain from taking life (including suicide) and doing harm intentionally or delinquently, 2. to abstain from taking what is not given, which includes stealing, robbery, fraud, deceitfulness, and dishonesty, and 3. to abstain from sexual misconduct. Positively formulated, right action means to act kindly and compassionately, to be honest, to respect the belongings of others, and to keep sexual relationships harmless to others. Further details regarding the concrete meaning of right action can be found in the Precepts.

5. Right Livelihood

Right livelihood means that one should earn one's living in a righteous way and that wealth should be gained legally and peacefully. The Buddha mentions four specific activities that harm other beings and that one should avoid for this reason: 1. dealing in weapons, 2. dealing in living beings (including raising animals for slaughter as well as slave trade and prostitution), 3. working in meat production and butchery, and 4. selling intoxicants and poisons, such as alcohol and drugs. Furthermore any other occupation that would violate the principles of right speech and right action should be avoided.

6. Right Effort

Right effort can be seen as a prerequisite for the other principles of the path. Without effort, which is in itself an act of will, nothing can be achieved, whereas misguided effort distracts the mind from its task, and confusion will be the consequence. Mental energy is the force behind right effort; it can occur in either wholesome or unwholesome states. The same type of energy that fuels desire, envy, aggression, and violence can on the other side fuel self-discipline, honesty, benevolence, and kindness. Right effort is detailed in four types of endeavours that rank in ascending order of perfection: 1. to prevent the arising of unarisen unwholesome states, 2. to abandon unwholesome states that have already arisen, 3. to arouse wholesome states that have not yet arisen, and 4. to maintain and perfect wholesome states already arisen.

7. Right Mindfulness

Right mindfulness is the controlled and perfected faculty of cognition. It is the mental ability to see things as they are, with clear consciousness. Usually, the cognitive process begins with an impression induced by perception, or by a thought, but then it does not stay with the mere impression. Instead, we almost always conceptualise sense impressions and thoughts immediately. We interpret them and set them in relation to other thoughts and experiences, which naturally go beyond the facticity of the original impression. The mind then posits concepts, joins concepts into constructs, and weaves those constructs into complex interpretative schemes. All this happens only half consciously, and as a result we often see things obscured. Right mindfulness is anchored in clear perception and it penetrates impressions without getting carried away. Right mindfulness enables us to be aware of the process of conceptualisation in a way that we actively observe and control the way our thoughts go. Buddha accounted for this as the four foundations of mindfulness: 1. contemplation of the body, 2. contemplation of feeling (repulsive, attractive, or neutral), 3. contemplation of the state of mind, and 4. contemplation of the phenomena.

8. Right Concentration

The eighth principle of the path, right concentration, refers to the development of a mental force that occurs in natural consciousness, although at a relatively low level of intensity, namely concentration. Concentration in this context is described as one-pointedness of mind, meaning a state where all mental faculties are unified and directed onto one particular object. Right concentration for the purpose of the eightfold path means wholesome concentration, i.e. concentration on wholesome thoughts and actions. The Buddhist method of choice to develop right concentration is through the practice of meditation. The meditating mind focuses on a selected object. It first directs itself onto it, then sustains concentration, and finally intensifies concentration step by step. Through this practice it becomes natural to apply elevated levels of concentration also in everyday situations.

Synchronicity, LSAD photography and lens-based media 3rd year exhibition, Sailor's Home, 8 O'Curry St., Limerick

This month has been full of synchronicity. While I was away in Palm Springs, I was contacted by a company interested in my pictures of our solenoid system at our custom MCM ranch on the hill.

When I returned home, the May 1961 issue of Architectural Forum had arrived. I'd purchased it for different reasons but look what we found inside.

Am sharing and including with the house pix -- hope this information helps other homeowners who are looking for details on this system.

Whilst setting up for a light painting shot, a guy comes hurtling down the 70m+ long jetty, in the dark, shoots past three photographers all setting up cameras and tripods and then proceeds to stand around for 10 minutes! Just enough time for me to take a few long exposures! Shot at Lytham St Annes.

Turnstones flying towards a sunset

That's Edinburgh -- those little bumps in the horizon just left of centre.

I took this photo when I was on a train to Inverness for a work thing the next morning, thinking how I'd much rather be spending Sunday night at home than on a train to Inverness.

And then, as I looked across the Forth, my iPod -- like some sophisticated piece of symbiotic technology from a science-fiction novel -- shuffled The Fall's Edinburgh Man onto my headphones, and suddenly there's Mark E Smith saying, "I tell you something, I wish I was in Edinburgh", which was exactly what I was thinking.

It was a small miracle. But, according to an old Cambridge mathematician, the fact that it occurred isn't at all surprising. Here's a bit of the wikipedia article on Littlewood's law:

"Littlewood defines a miracle as an exceptional event of special significance occurring at a frequency of one in a million. He assumes that during the hours in which a human is awake and alert, a human will experience one event per second, which may either be exceptional or unexceptional (for instance, seeing the computer screen, the keyboard, the mouse, etc.). Additionally, Littlewood supposes that a human is alert for about eight hours per day.

As a result, a human will, in 35 days, have experienced, under these suppositions, 1,008,000 events. Accepting this definition of a miracle, one can be expected to observe one miraculous occurrence within the passing of every 35 consecutive days – and therefore, according to this reasoning, seemingly miraculous events are actually commonplace."

How appropriate to have a white horse passing the White Horse pub!

Synchronicity means meaningful coincidence , or two or more events occurring at the same time and do not have among themselves a cause, but of meaning. This term was coined by Swiss psychiatrist Carl Gustav Jung and the case of synchronicity that most intrigued him was that of Gold-Bug: "My example refers to a young patient who, despite efforts on both sides, proved to be psychologically inaccessible. The difficulty lay in the fact that she always know more about everything. Her excellent education had a gun equipped with a tailor-made for this purpose, an exquisitely refined Cartesian rationalism with an idea of reality impeccably "geometrical." After several failed attempts to sweeten her rationalism with a somewhat more human understanding, I had to reduce to the hope that something unexpected and irrational happened, something that would break the replica intellectual who had referred. Well, one day, sat in front her back to the window, listening to the flow of his rhetoric. He had an impressive dream the night before, where someone had given her a golden scarab - a piece of expensive jewelery. While she was telling me the dream, I heard anything by gently tapping on the window. I turned and saw it was a fairly large flying insect knocking against the window, trying to enter the dark room. This seemed strange to me. I opened the window immediately and caught the insect in the air when he entered. It was a family of Escarabídeos beetle, which attacks the rose bushes, whose green-gold color looks a lot like a golden scarab. I handed the beetle to my patient with the words, "Here is your scarab." The experience opened the necessary gap in his rationalism and you break the ice of intellectual resistance. Now I could continue treatment with satisfactory results. " (Taken from "The Road Less Traveled" by M. Scott Peck) The odd thing is that in symbolic language, scarab means "transformation." Curious also that the world of dreams seems to be involved in a lot of synchronicities. I've talked here about once a dream I had with the music of Schubert , something completely unknown to me. Now, on Friday 03 days, I had another dream in music, was actually a false awakening, where I swore I was waking up, feeling light, mood, full of vitality. Played softly in the background music of Sam Cooke "Having a Party" (perfect for wrapping up one morning). I looked at the clock, which marks exactly 9:00 am but when I went to the window the sky was blue-yellow, just like Vanilla Sky . I found a bit odd, but it was so beautiful that I was contemplating the landscape a bit, already thinking of using my sudden willingness to go morning walk on the beach. Meanwhile, the music was already under way, a totally instrumental part. Wait! Instrumental? I was there I hit upon the fact that it could not be real because there is no instrumental part in the original music. Then we all became confused and PUF, in fact I woke up completely "nailed" in bed and not in the mood for anything ... I confess that I almost cried in this body to be heavy. I make my coffee, and the music of Sam Cooke did not come out of my head ... could still hear in my mind the details of the instruments forming the layers of sound ... I had all this will be the original music? I went to the computer, check my MP3 collection, and put it there to hear the music. Disappointment. The music, being old (1962), was drowned, standing only a (beautiful) voice of the singer. So do I invented an elaborate arrangement for music? I decided to find the net a remastered version of the same song, and found. Listening to her, I could only smile in dismay: was exactly the same arrangement that I heard in the dream, where even the balance had melody / vocal and height of the violins (which could barely be heard in the version I had!). I would not even put it in the text, since the post of Schubert gave the talk (do not I can not dream without being criticized?), but every time I hear the remastered version, I get more and more amazed at this. .. "Thing" that I do not know how to explain. It would be an access to the Akashic Records? The collective unconscious? A synchronicity? I have no explanation.

“I can see the destiny you sold; Turned into a shining band of gold”

Wrapped Around Your Finger: The Police, Synchronicity

This is one of the darker of songs in The Police’s library, but one of the more brilliantly written as well. I always wonder what a novel or collection of poems by Sting’s hands would be like. The sounds in the song are very brilliant, clear and distinct. It carries the song very well with a dark back ground and a clear ringing through it. Sing’s voice is laid perfectly on top of all of the tones and sounds to make a wonderful song.

I will admit that this song is probably about something different than what I take out of it, but that is the beauty that I often find in music. What it means to one is something different to another. For me this song speaks on deep levels of the master and apprentice, be it God and the Devil, Husband and Wife (though who is the master in that scenario is always different!), Doctor and Intern… the list goes on.

I like the symbolism that the master was once an apprentice bound by a symbol- in this case a ring. It is part of what we do when we learn either from a teacher or a “Master” of someone wiser than we are to submit to their knowledge- binding ourselves to them in a small or a large way. There are so many levels to this, but I think this song (in my interpretation) portrays this well musically and lyrically. Sometimes the ones we submit to and give out trust and fate have our best interests at heart and sometimes they do not. I think in this song I get the feeling that it is not the case of best intentions.

*** Artist Notes ***

I wanted to use a really over sized “ring” since it was a really strong bond in the song: almost as if the ring was something clamped down on the finger of the apprentice / master.

Lyrics:

You consider me the young apprentice

Caught between the Scylla and carbides

Hypnotized by you if I should linger

Staring at the ring around your finger

I have only come here seeking knowledge

Things they wouldn't teach me of in college

I can see the destiny you sold

Turned into a shining band of gold

I'll be wrapped around your finger

I'll be wrapped around your finger

Mephistopheles is not your name

But I know what you're up to just the same

I will listen hard to your tuition

And you will see it come to its fruition

I'll be wrapped around your finger

I'll be wrapped around your finger

Devil and the deep blue sea behind me

Vanish in the air you'll never find me

I will turn your face to alabaster

Then you will find your servant is your master

And you'll be wrapped around my finger

You'll be wrapped around my finger

You'll be wrapped around my finger

The figure is originally a silver, featureless sculpture at the STL art museum but I added many layers of my own work (hence the name). The eye is from a reflection of another object that occurred naturally from the angle I shot the figure. Those footprints are from a collection of petroglyphs I photographed in Utah, the water is from a fish tank at the zoo and there are grainy particles from a cup of black coffee. Then there is also a weird tree thing that I drew.
