GB Railfreight 92033 arrives at Warrington Bank Quay for a crew change whilst working 1Z24 London Waterloo - Blackpool North on the night leg of GBRf's "Out of the Ordinary" rail tour. 73141 and 73107 were on the rear, making a now very rare sight at Warrington.

One from a few weeks ago that I've only just got around to processing, Colas Rail 37254 arrives at Sheffield working 1Q50 Derby RTC - Doncaster West Yard. Celeb LL beast 37025 was on the rear much to my happiness.

All in all this trip took around 6 hours from leaving my flat to arriving back again, god I miss my car being at uni!!

An immaculate DB Cargo 67005 ‘Queen’s Messenger’ accelerates away from a short stop at Acton Grange Junction working 1Z39 back to Wolverton, seen here at Moore (Warrington) with classmate 67006 ‘Royal Sovereign’ on the rear. 8th April 2019.

The train ran up from Kemble during the night and stabled in Carnforth HS before running to Penrith to drop Prince Charles and Camilla. The train then ran to Carlisle for reversal before heading south back to base at Wolverton.

I dont often see swifts grabbing a drink, and this one was very unexpected as i walked along the canal. This was the closest one to me to grab a drink,a REALLY tough shot to get on the length of the canal,As they grabbed a drink randomly along the canal,so trying to guess where they would get a drink was almost impossible. If you could find a smaller pool of water where swifts drink it would make a shot like this easier.

Network Rail 97303 thrashes away from the tamper siding at Warrington Bank Quay along the up goods working the delayed 3Z16 Warrington Bank Quay - Coleham ISU (CE) with a UTU set and 97304 'Ffestiniog & Welsh Highland Railways' in tow. The pair sounded fantastic accelerating away and could be heard for a good few minutes after disappearing into the darkness.

The pair were cancelled here the previous night for some reason?

Colas Rail 37521 makes a very brief stop at Warrington Bank Quay before making a spirited departure working 6C91 Crewe Basford Hall - Kirkdale with 5 autoballasters and 37116 in tow. 25/11/18

Bit of luck with this one, just about finding a patch of sun in an otherwise largely cloudy sky, GB Railfreight's triple grey livery 92044 'Couperin' passes through Acton Bridge working 6L48 Garston Car Terminal - Dagenham Dock.

A shot you've probably already seen about 20 times but here's another for good measure. Locomotive Services Limited 87002 'Royal Sovereign' passes a busy Winwick, Warrington, working 5Z87 Carlisle - Crewe H.S. with 47805 'Roger Hosking MA' and a mixed rake of coaching stock in tow. June 25th 2020.

At this stage, 88009 was bearing down at an alarming rate, passing the 87 at the M62 motorway bridge just south of this spot! June 25th 2020.

The only consolation of a frustrating trip to Helsby, 67010 arrives into Helsby station working 1D31 Manchester Piccadilly - Llandudno.

DC Rail's 60029 'Ben Nevis' passes Warrington Bank Quay working 6Z23 Humberstone Road - Carlisle Kingmoor V.Q. with empty JNA wagons in tow. 22/10/20

The last time I saw this loco it was stored demic outside Crewe Diesel Depot which is itself now very different too.

Unfortunately, I made a bit of a hash of the original but after far too long on photoshop it has polished up okay.

EWS 90039 leads DB Schenker liveried 90040 through Winwick Jn working 4M25 Mossend Euroterminal - Daventry IRFT. Alas 040 wasn't leading and a sunny leading shot of it evades me once again, although i'm pleased with this effort of 039 which was another less important tick.

Unbranded DRS 68022 'Resolution' leads 3 coaches from the former WB64/NC64 'Pretendolino' set and an ex AGA buffet working 5K28 Warrington Bank Quay - Crewe CS. The working is operated by TPE for practical handling training on 68s 68027 on the back.

One from back in March in a lucky patch of sun, GBRf Aggregates Industries livery 66711 ' Sense' passes Winwick Jn with the power handle wide open to get the heavy 6E10 Liverpool Biomass Terminal - Drax AES back up to speed.

WCRC 47826 powers through Red Bank working 1Z30 High Wycombe - Carlisle Statesman Rail charter. 47746 'Chris Fudge' was on the rear.

DB Cargo 67005 'Queen's Messenger' arrives and stands at Warrington Bank Quay for a crew change working 1Z20 from Manchester Victoria to Cardiff with the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge on board the royal train behind. 67006 'Royal Sovereign' on the tail end. The working originated the previous evening from London Euston, heading north to Mossend and onwards to Edinburgh. The move stopped off at Berwick today, heading south to Batley with a stopover in Marsden before arriving into Manchester Victoria for the final engagement of the day. The train is seen here on its final run of the day down to South Wales ahead of tomorrows proceedings. 7/12/20

Having left Clitheroe 104 minutes late, GB Railfreight 66749 passes Winwick Jn about an hour late working 6V35 Clitheroe Castle Cement - Avonmouth. The working was a mere 2 minutes late by Hartford owing to the amount of slack in the path. 28/01/19

So far this year every sun shot I've managed to pull off bar one has been here. Winwick has been quite the sun trap!

With the New Measurement Train currently out of action, the Colas 'skip' twins are currently out covering.

67027 'Charlotte' coasts through Red Bank, Newton-Le-Willows working 1Q18 Slateford Depot - Crewe C.S. (L&NWR site) with 67023 'Stella' on the back. 27/5/20

*The photogenic GSM-R mast sprouting out of the loco has been removed.

With its origin of Drax Power station seen in the background, pristine GB Railfreight 60095 applies the power at Claypit Lane on its first trip back to Tyne working 6N61 Drax AES - Tyne Coal Terminal.

Big thanks to Tom for the lift.

Note: Photo has had the top of a mast photoshopped out which was sticking out of the loco.

Another rainy day swifty.

Making a rare appearance in the Warrington area, GB Railfreight's London Transport black livery 66718 'Sir Peter Henry CBE' passes Winwick Junction with a short rake of PCA cement tanks working the additional 6M35 Gloucester N.Y. - Clitheroe Castle Cement.

With the weather having been fairly miserable all day, the sun finally cleared the squiff and cloud a matter of minutes prior to the image. 27/3/19

Colas 56096 and 56302 lead 6E32 Colas Ribble Rail - Lindsey Oil Refinery through Lostock Hall Jn with some blasts on the horn for the gathered crowd by the driver. April 19th 2018.

Preserved 86259 'Les Ross/Peter Pan' leads 1Z86 London Euston - Carlisle past the gallery at Moore, Warrington on 21st September, 2019.

Having arrived at about 0915, the shadows were well across so it was a relief to see it clear out just in time.

There once was a Hummer named Swifty

Who thought that my Bee Balm was nifty

So diving right in

I don't normally bother with these shots but with 73/1s being very rare this far north it's well worth recording. GBRf 73141 and 73107 tail 1Z24 London Waterloo - Blackpool North at Warrington Bank Quay. 21st September 2018.

Oddly, their hidden sign (on the back wall in the alley) has a much cooler typeface and mascot, but this is still pretty nice too.

Preserved class 40s 40145 and 40106 'Atlantic Conveyor' pass Moore working 0Z46 Crewe H.S. - Bury E.L.R. CFPS 40145 began its journey at Barrow Hill yesterday, taking LSL 37190 to Kidderminster S.V.R. and picking up 40106. The working being crewed by LSL. 22/7/20

Lucky with the light for a change!

News filtered through this afternoon (thanks Swifty) that DRS 88007 was in trouble on 4S44 and was to be taken off at Basford Hall. Chiltern liveried 68013 & TPE liveried 68029 were commandeered to take the train forward 74L and I got it with literally seconds to spare. Once a common sight north of Crewe, its rare for us to get a pair of 'Cats' on this working.

* Here is 68013 on another rescue mission: www.flickr.com/photos/45021513@N08/49060204656/in/photoli...

Oh man am I ever glad I found these. Enjoy.

66707 'Sir Sam Fay' shatters the summer evening peace as it passes through Moore at full power working 6E24 Liverpool Biomass Terminal - Drax Aes.

Much to my annoyance, Warrington box held this in WBQ for absolutely everything and went from early to late! By this stage, the light was getting very close to going but thankfully it held on just long enough. By the time I was about 20 metres into the walk back to the car, the light then gave up for the rest of the day.

It looked so promising, if I recall correctly there was 3 tugs on Tuebrook and just two 66s. The other 66 was on something else and 775 was working back from Drax. It was as good as nailed on to be a 60 and the sheets said 60087.

So, surprise surprise here is not 60087, better known as 66775 F231/HMS Argyll struggling up the bank towards Weaver Jn at Moore working 6E10 Liverpool Biomass Terminal - Drax AES. At least 775 is a bit different to the other sheds.

One day I may get a 60 here but I'm not holding my breath!

Please note this was taken well before the current situation

Colas Rail 56078 leads recently returned classmate 56049 'Robin of Templecombe' through Horbury working 6E32 Colas Ribble Rail - Lindsey Oil Refinery. 14/11/19

Horbury seems to be the place for luck this week, whilst the majority of the sky in this shot is squiffed up there was some gaps behind me and luckily the thick blob of squiffy cloud that was encroaching within arms length of the sun held out long enough to get the shot. Needless to say after the lengthly journey on public transport (2 busses and 2 trains!) from York I'd have been well peaved to get done! On the journey back north east I didn't see a single patch of clear sky that didn't have any squiff, very lucky move.

Preserved 37025 'Inverness TMD' passes Warrington Central working the monthly 1Q44 Crewe C.S. - Crewe C.S. PLPR test train with classmate 37116 on the rear.

As part of the Network Rail Infrastructure Monitoring contract reshuffle, the operation of this diagram (1Q41-45) has now passed to Freightliner. However, as of yet FL haven’t operated a full week of this diagram yet with this month Colas and GB Railfreight hiring staff to Network Rail to help out due to FL being unable to supply sufficient crew.

Under a threatening sky, preserved large logo 'tractor' 37025 'Inverness TMD' powers through Warrington Bank Quay working the delayed 3Q26 Crewe CS - Longsight via the North West. 37607 was originally due to work this but due to issues on the inbound working it was swapped for '025.

Direct Rail Services 37059 stands just prior to departing Sheffield working 1Q50 Derby R.T.C. - Doncaster West Yard with PLPR4 and 37259 on the rear.

16th January 2020.

The tripod police and an XC voyager very nearly put a stop to this shot. Luckily there was about a 30 second window (if that!) from the voyager leaving to the 37 departing.

A sight soon to change with 70s due to take over 6J37 when the 60s pass to GBRf. Colas Rail 60021 makes light work of 6J37 Carlisle Yard - Chirk passed the pegs at Helsby. Making the best of a real farce of a day, with the field at Godscroft Lane being full of over inquisitive cows it was a quick drive up the road to Helsby to tick it off here again, this time at a higher angle.

Swifties attend the Taylor Swift concert on July 22, 2023 at Lumen Field in Seattle, Washington, USA

My favourite sissy In SL

With the last remnants of snow on the ground, immaculate West Coast Railways 47772 'Carnforth TMD' applies the power passing Acton Bridge with classmate 47826 on the rear working 1Z46 Lancaster - Bristol Temple Meads. The charter was a positioning move for the following days 'The Looe Brush' railtour.

February 2nd 2019.

DB Cargo 67005 'Queen's Messenger' leads a failed 67002 working 1Z55 London Euston - Burnley Manchester Road, seen here at Winwick Jn 56 minutes late having lost around 75 minutes due to 67005 having to take the train back to Bletchley to run round. The working was a footex carrying Chelsea fans to Burnley.

DRS 37424 'Avro Vulcan XH558' stands at Cark before making a spirited departure on 2C31 Lancaster - Barrow-In-Furness.

Direct Rail Services 68023 'Achilles' leads a rare full blue and grey rake of Riviera stock and 68001 'Evolution' working 1Z89 Carlisle - Norwich railtour for Nenta at Red Bank, Newton-Le-Willows. 21/4/18

GB Railfreight 60095 basks in the low autumn light passing Askham Bar working 6H12 Tyne Dock - Drax loaded biomass.

It was a bit of an unnerving run down on the bus with Worst bus running late meaning I was cutting it rather fine...

On a rare midday working, Royal Mail's parcel units 325003, 325001 and 325016 scream through Winwick Jn working 1M23 Mossend Down Yard - Crewe IEMD for winter maintenance. Parcels units can be recorded in sun in this area in Summer but to record one early afternoon in winter is certainly uncommon. Thanks goes to Mr Moran for his trainspotting in Crewe to get the middle and rear unit numbers.

Work stained GB Railfreight 60056 rumbles through Acton Bridge with the early running 6E10 Liverpool Bulk Terminal - Drax AES with driver Nige happy in his work at the helm. 2nd October, 2019.
