Maurice Morrow MLA and Arlene Foster MLA have presented a cheque to the charity ‘Help for Heroes’, after a collection made at a local Democratic Unionist Association carol service held in Ballygawley Presbyterian Church Hall.

They are pictured here presenting a cheque to Neil Somerville who is a volunteer worker for Help for Heroes.

Maurice Morrow said:

“It is telling that so many people are keen to show their gratitude to the men and women who honourably serve our country, whether at home or abroad. Help for Heroes is aptly named and has received widespread support for the work that it carries out. It is only right that we try to give back to our troops the appreciation and support that they so deserve.

Right across Northern Ireland there are many families with loved ones in uniform and we stand with them as we wish our troops a safe and prompt return home. We hope that this donation will play its part in not only providing for the servicemen and women who need it but also as an encouragement to the families patiently awaiting the end of each tour of duty.

The members of the Fermanagh/South Tyrone Democratic Unionist Association kindly donated £761.00 to this very worthy cause of helping our heroes. I would also like to thank Ballygawley Presbyterian Church as their Committee did not charge for the use of their hall and kitchen facilities meaning the additional money saved could be added to the Help for Heroes fund, at the request of the church.

I would call upon all of us to remember our heroes and thank them for serving our country with such professional dignity.”

I honestly had a hard time figuring out what this one was all about. "BEAT 4 ALS"? Beat what for whom? HUH?

The Lou Gehrig line was helpful when I finally got close enough to read it. (Luckily I could guess that ALS was an acronym.)

You can buy your very own BEAT 4 ALS magnetic ribbon here.

Philadelphia: Local officials and military-connected organizations honored a World War II veteran on Friday, June 11 at a patriotic event hosted by Cherry Hill Dodge and the New Jersey Employer Support of the Guard and Reserve (ESGR) program.

Eighty-nine year-old honoree Edward Martino of Cherry Hill is a Purple Heart recipient who served in the 309th Combat Engineers in the Army's 84th Infantry Division. He was wounded by shrapnel in the bloody Battle of the Bulge amid snow, sleet and rain in March 1945.

"Our owner Charlie Faulke is a Korean War veteran and we have gone out of her way to support active and former military, so when the opportunity to honor a veteran came long, we jumped at the opportunity," said dealership manger Bryan Lasater, an Air Force veteran.

Donna Clementoni of Barrington, an ESGR advocate ad spokeswoman, said ESGR is a mainly volunteer Department of Defense organization seeking to create a business culture in which all American employers value and support the military service and sacrifice of their employees.

Mel is Co-Chair of Move America Forward (www.moveamericaforward.org/)

She is also a radio talk show host on San Francisco's KSFO AM560 Lee Rodgers Show. She initiated the recall of Gov. Gray Davis in California, pushed the ecological issue of banning MTBE in the gas there, and has earned her place in America's heart as a patriotic political activist.
