On Sunday, I took away my usual velcro patches for the yellow ribbon.

Veterans Day — Thursday, November 11, 2010
I have many family members who have served in the military. Most came home, some did not. I dedicate this image to those that served, those that lost their lives and for those that have chosen to serve and protect; including my daughter Rachel.
I am proud of her decision.
~
*This is a photo of Rachel from her Corps School Graduation Ceremony. The flag is from an image I took for my Project 365 on Memorial Day last year; and the words inscribed across the flag are from the "Enlisted Oath."
I apologize for the double post today but I really have many things to be thankful for.
Something about the baseball hat, the support for veterans 'ribbon', and the goat having a dump over the cliff inform this car owner's choice of a personalized license plate somehow, IMO. Fortunately I was able to photograph this at a stop light, as it was very hard to keep up with the driver otherwise! I almost "lost him"--but was glad for the light. Hang in there, bro.

I recently learned that the husband of someone with whom I work was deployed to Iraq. They are relatively new in town and have 4 children. I believe in giving back to those who serve us, so it was easy for me to offer a session to do photos of the kids and to make an album that they will send to him in time for Father's Day. Below are a few more shots from our session.
Have you done anything to help support our troops lately....?

In honor of Veteran's Day and the 100th anniversary of the end of World War I which killed 10 million men in fighting that involved 32 countries around the globe 🌎, we are posting Kaufman's Army & Navy in Hell's Kitchen. Kaufman's was founded in 1938 and is one of the oldest military supply stores in the U.S. 🇺🇸 and the oldest in NYC. We love their #handpainted #signage which the owner told us was commissioned by his mother during the height of the Vietnam War. Photo and full interview with 3rd generation owner appear in book "Store Front II-A History Preserved". Thank you all who have served and to those on active duty! 🇺🇸 #veteransday #veteransupport #signcollective #signsunited #everything_signage #insta_america #americana #insta_america_americana #signgeeks #fontastic #typevstime #supportourtroops #ig_signage Kaufman's Army & Navy #lettering #dailytype #seeyourcity
If you're an American citizen, so do you, whether you like it or not. Israel has been the largest recipient of US foreign aid for more than 30 years.
This was painted the week after we went to war with Iraq. I remember walking by it every day while going to high school. Years later it is still there and we are still at war with Iraq.
To me the war on Iraq was a mistake. To others, it wasn't. But regardless of party lines and personal opinions, we must think about those who have died--both Iraqis and Americans--and the sacrifices they made. This graffiti is, to me, a good realization of the loss. I like to imagine the woman in this house has a son in that war, or a husband overseas.

PEBBLE BEACH, Calif. - Keeping an annual AT&T Pebble Beach National Pro-Am tradition, members from the Defense Language Institute Foreign Language Center and Coast Guard Station-Monterey represent the military at the tournament’s 15th hole by tending a special pin adorned with the United States flag Feb. 7, 8 and 9, 2014. The 15th hole was designated as the location of the special “Support Our Troops” tent provided by tournament sponsors and organizers, providing free refreshments and a place to pause and relax for service members attending the tournament. Besides special recognition of military personnel at the 15th hole during the final three days of competition, Feb. 5 was designated as Military Appreciation Day, a special day set aside to recognize and honor the men and women of the U.S. Armed Forces during tournament week, Feb. 3 - 9.

Where were you when it happened? I think we all will always remember where we were.
My photo is dedicated not only to those who lost their lives and their families...but also to our troops who protect our country each and every day. My sister Jami is Airforce and my brother in law Joe is Army and both have served our country well, but have also given up things in their lives to serve us. So when you do see these service men and women while you are traveling or even going to the store please thank them-
Love today because you may not be here tomorrow.

BURY ME NEXT TO A MARINE
Bury me next to a Marine,
When my time comes to a end,
So I can spend eternity
Beside my brother and friend.
I’ve served beside them for years,
And they inspired me every day,
They’ve never ask for anything’
So a debt I can never repay.
None of them served for money,
None for glory or fame,
But they’ve served in every clime and place,
Heroes with but one name.
No one will ever out do them,
Their honor is never outdone,
They will go down in history’
As America’s favorite sons.
Marines will never fail you,
And their guard will never cease,
Please bury me next to a Marine,
So I may rest in peace.

The buses had just arrived at Camp Pendleton carrying our loved ones returning from service in Iraq. In all the confusion of mothers, fathers, wives and children looking for their returning loved one, my nephew's wife finally found her husband, and luckily I was there to photograph their first embrace. I'll never forget the look of profound relief, love and contentment on my nephew's face in this photograph. They just held each other like this for a long time before breaking their embrace (and then the kissing started :-)
It was truly magical to see this expression of true love. The look on my nephew's face says it all...

THANK YOU - September 10, 2007:
Thank you all so much for your kind and moving comments on this photo. I truly think of the thousands of photographs I've taken over my lifetime, this is the best one. I was so fortunate to "capture a moment in time" that was so very precious to my nephew and his wife and our family. A few days after I took this photo, I printed up a 8x10 of it and gave it to my nephew and he loved it. At first I thought this photo was too personal to share with the public on Flickr, but then I decided there must be many people out there (parents, spouses and other relatives of soldiers serving in Iraq, and the soldiers themselves) who may find that this photo makes them smile and gives them hope that they too will soon celebrate a similar home-coming. Thank you again for your kind comments, I appreciate it so much.
