Stefania Ion, a member of Project H.A.N.D.S. (Helping Angels National Donated Support), packs the blankets, beanies, booties and scarves she has spent the past year knitting using donated yarn. The handmade items will be delivered to the less fortunate and homeless children to keep warm during the winter.
ethiopienne: Support We Read Too: A Central Resource for Books by PoC We Read Too is a mobile directory of books with PoC main characters written by authors of color. When We Read Too first launched, the directory contained 300 books. Since then, it’s doubled to over 600! The process of reviewing suggestions and researching books is time intensive and cannot be done alone. Since the launch, I’ve received over 1,600 suggestions. I worked with another student to go through half of those suggestions. Raising money through Indiegogo will allow me to hire someone to review suggestions on a regular basis. This year, my goal is to surpass 1,000 books. In 2016, the Cooperative Children’s Book Center (CCBC) at the University of Wisconsin determined that 12% of children’s books were written or illustrated by people of color. (View the full statistics of the CCBC here). Believe it or not, the CCBC has been collecting this data since 1994, yet no central resource exists. Before creating We Read Too, during the end of 2013, I spent weeks looking for a central resource for children’s and young adult books with characters of color that were written by authors of the same background. When I didn’t find that resource, I knew I had to create it myself. I want We Read Too to be the central resource where authors of colors can know their work is being celebrated and readers can find books with diverse representation. Thursday night I returned to Providence with bryanj87
and Macedo295 for some additional night shooting. We started at the Point St. Bridge and continued south from there. It was easy to manage the cold with enough layers but the wind posed quite a challenge. Camera shake and wind driven debris were quite common, changing lenses was not.
The moving clouds in this image caught my eye as well as the support structures. I used a halogen flashlight to illuminate the image a little.

To Support Displaced Youth from Fallujah
Inauguration of Temporary Premises of Fallujah University (Dorms and Classrooms)
in Abu Ghraib, Baghdad
On 23 June 2016, the temporary premises of Fallujah University, located inside the Veterinary College, Baghdad University in Abu Ghraib, were inaugurated. With the generous contribution from the Government of Japan, the temporary premises of Fallujah University were established by the United Nations Human Settlements Programme (UN-Habitat) providing 25 classrooms and 128 residential units that can accommodate 512 students, in addition to basic site infrastructure and an administration building. The project aimed at supporting displaced youth who bear enormous and long-lasting human, social and economic costs.
His Excellency Mr. Sohaib Al-Rawi, Governor of Anbar, who attended the event, commented that while the Anbar Governorate has been supporting institutions displaced by violence outside and within Anbar, including Fallujah University, the ongoing financial crisis has affected all aspects of people’s lives and limited the government’s capacity to support. The Governor acknowledged the efforts of UN agencies and the ongoing support of UN-Habitat on housing self-repair and shelter projects within Ramadi. He expressed his gratitude to all those who stand with people of Iraq, and specifically of Fallujah, in the midst of the hardship they face.
On UN-Habitat’s side, Dr. Erfan Ali, Head of Iraq Programme, pointed out that lack of access to education among youth is one of the key factors that fuel a cycle of poverty, hopelessness and frustration. He expressed his hope that these new premises of Fallujah University will enable young women and men from Fallujah to continue their education and play an active role as agents of positive and constructive change.
Mr. Hirofumi Miyake, Chargé d'Affaires ad interim, Embassy of Japan in Iraq, stated that Japan also has its own internally displaced persons, resulting from disasters of tsunamis, earthquakes, debris, and the latest nuclear accident, and therefore the people of Japan understand very well the importance of support to displaced persons in Iraq. He further emphasized that Japan will continue to sustain the efforts of UN-Habitat to improve the living conditions of the displaced persons in Iraq.
Dr. Ibraheem Abdulkareem, Deputy President of Fallujah University, stated that the completion of the new premises of Fallujah University has provided a glimpse of hope in the heart of displaced students, and he recognized that the inauguration is concomitant to the liberation of Fallujah.
On his part, Mr. Sattar Nawroz Khan, General Director of Migration at the Ministry of Migration and Displacement, praised the joint cooperation and partnership between multiple actors, including the Governments of Iraq and Japan, Anbar Governorate, Fallujah University, and UN-Habitat, that enabled the positive results of the overall project.
This project was implemented within the framework of larger programme titled “Humanitarian Support to Internally Displaced Persons in Iraq through Provision of Durable Shelter,” funded by the Government of Japan, aiming to improve the living conditions of internally displaced persons in Iraq through the provision of prefabricated durable shelters, and thereby to support and strengthen their self reliance.

Someone apparently stuck this sticker on this commuter rail cab car to express their support for the idea of the North/South Rail Link, a proposed rail line for MBCR and Amtrak that would connect North Station and South Station. The North/South Rail Link is a controversial idea because of its predicted expense and the disruption its construction would cause to downtown Boston. However no other major city has parts of its rail system separated like Boston has with the north side and south side, and the rail link would not only make local north/south travel easier (like what I did yesterday Mansfield to Lowell) but would permit long-distance Amtrak travelers to go all the way along the east coast from Florida to Maine.

A huge crowd - reportedly the largest ever for Palestine in the UK - gathered in London (and in other cities across the UK and around the world) to protest the ongoing Israeli assault on Gaza. Organised by the Palestine Solidarity Campaign, Stop the War, Friends of al-Aqsa, CND, and others, the march started outside BBC HQ, in Portland Place, and headed via the US Embassy to Hyde Park.

Competitors from across the 1st Mission Support Command (USAR) compete for time during the 10K (6.2 mile) ruck march at Fort Buchanan, Puerto Rico, March 13. Points are awarded based on how quickly the competitor can finish the course. Ruck sacks for the event are required in weigh 35 pounds and in addition the competitors must carry their weapon and a water source.
The Noncommissioned officers and Soldiers competing will be tested in Warrior Training Tasks, drill and ceremony, physical fitness, weapons proficiency, Army policies and programs, wirte a 500 word essay on leadership, complete an Army knowledge exam and complete several mystery events designed to test the skills, endurance and mental agility of the Soldiers. The winners of the 1st Mission Support Command (USAR) Best Warrior competition will go on the compete at the USARC BWC held at Fort Bragg, NC., in June.

Virginia and Massachusetts National Guard Soldiers and Airmen support a free health clinic offering vision, dental and other basic medical services Aug. 3-18, 2022, in the Columbus, Georgia, area. The clinic was part of the Department of Defense-funded Innovative Readiness Training program with the missions of serving the local community and training military personnel to be ready for real-world response operations. VNG Soldiers assigned to the Charlottesville-based Charlie Company, 429th Brigade Support Battalion, 116th Infantry Brigade Combat Team and Airmen from multiple states, active duty and reserve U.S. Air Force and U.S. Navy as well as the U.S. Public Health Service personnel took part in the project. IRT is a DOD program providing joint training opportunities to increase deployment readiness and key services like health care, construction, transportation and cybersecurity with lasting benefits for American communities.
