U.S. Army 1st Lt. Joseph Varin and Master Sgt. Brian Deese discuss plans as U.S. Soldiers from the South Carolina National Guard's 218th Regiment (Leadership) Regional Training Institute repair a section of road damaged by floodwaters in Lexington County, S.C., Oct. 20, 2015. The recent historic flood in S.C. caused washouts and severe damage to transportation infrastructure all across the Midlands, requiring much-needed rapid repairs by engineer units to assist counties and restore normal operations. The South Carolina National Guard has been activated to support state and county emergency management agencies and local first responders as historic flooding impacts counties statewide. Screw Pickets were used as supports for Barbed Wire Defences and were introduced in 1915 as a replacement for timber posts. The French name for this type of steel stake was ''Queue de Cochon'' or pigtail, the World War One steel stake became known in the British Army as a ''Corkscrew Picket'' which was made from a steel bar which had its bottom end bent into a spiral coil, it had three (or sometimes four) loops or eyes, one at the top, one at midway and one just above the corkscrew spiral, the final product could be up to 8ft long.
Groups of soldiers known as ''Wiring Parties'' went out at night into no man's land to position these supports, they later strung the Barbed Wire through the loops to form a Defensive Wire Obstacle as a protection for their trench line. The British called this type of stake a Corkscrew Picket because it was screwed into the ground rather than hammered in as the timber posts had been (the hammering made a loud noise, usually attracting enemy fire !) The Screw Pickets replaced the timber posts (although Screw Pickets were less rigid than timber posts) but they could be installed rapidly and silently. The Screw Picket was screwed into the ground by turning it in a clockwise direction using an entrenching tool's handle or a stick inserted in the bottom eye of the picket for leverage, the bottom eye was used in order to avoid bending the vertical bar of the the Corkscrew Picket. A wiring party is described in detail in the World War One novel ''All Quiet on the Western Front'' by contemporary author Erich Maria Remarque.

The Cruck Cottage, Shieldhill Road, Torthorwald, Dumfries, Scotland, was originally constructed in the mid 18th century or thereabouts.
It is of the ‘cruck’ construction common at that time, i.e. the main supports consist of oak crucks or trunks, which support the roof. The roof consists of counter tie beams and branch rafters, laid with heather turf, and thatched with rye straw. The original walls would be of clay or turf, but are now built with rubble and lime mortar.
This cottage is unique to the area, and is the only remaining example of this type of construction which would be common in the 18th and 19th century.
The cottage is owned by Solway Heritage, and is maintained and run by the Cruck Cottage Heritage Association.
We had an enjoyable look around the cottage and were given some excellent info about the house by a neighbour who provided the key to gain access to the cottage.

Three Soldiers attached to the Army Field Support Battalion-Kandahar received end of tour awards for their hard work during six months they were with the battalion. The group worked hard for several months bringing equipment back to record and helping the battalion manage their theater sustainment stock that helps Soldiers maintain their readiness.
About the 401st:
The 401st Army field Support Brigade provides Soldiers, Sailors, Airman, and Marines, the tools and resources necessary to complete the mission. If they shoot, drive it, fly it, wear it, eat it or communicate with it, the 401st helps provide it. The brigade assists coalition partners with many of their logistical and sustainment needs. The brigade also handles the responsible disposition of equipment in Afghanistan to support evolving missions. We are the single link between Warfighters in the field, and working through Army Sustainment Command, we leverage Army Materiel Command’s worldwide Materiel Enterprise to develop, deliver, and sustain materiel to ensure a dominant joint force for the U.S. and our Allies.

As Moby writes, the bill restoring funding has passed and the governor has indicated he will sign it (see dist08.casen.govoffice.com for more info)
But it still would be helpful to contact him asking him to sign SB3x13 and to make sure there is long term funding for domestic violence prevention programs (this is just a temporary measure for this year)

I'm a little bit fascinated by members of the rhythm section of a rock band. You're in the background, both musically and physically - you're in a rock band but you're not really a rock star. You're not so much in as behind the spotlight.
Bassists, especially, interest me: there you are with a bitchin' looking guitar, but you're looking down, your motions are slow, even methodicaly, while the singer and lead guitarist swagger and flail. And the rock could go on without you.
Perhaps it's my years of working in a support-staff role, my own efforts and successes being merely suplementary to the orgainizations public goals.

The Mae Tao Clinic (MTC), founded and directed by Dr. Cynthia Maung, provides free health care for refugees, migrant workers, and other individuals who cross the border from Burma to Thailand. People of all ethnicities and religions are welcome at the Clinic. Its origins go back to the student pro-democracy movement in Burma in 1988 and the brutal repression by the Burmese regime of that movement. The fleeing students who needed medical attention were attended in a small house in Mae Sot.
Since 1989 MTC has grown, from that one small house to a large complex of simple buildings that provide a wide variety of health services to different groups of people. Today it serves a target population of approximately 150,000 on the Thai-Burma border. Exact numbers are hard to calculate because of the fluidity of the population. About 50% of those who come to MTC for medical attention are migrant workers in the Mae Sot area; the other 50% travel cross-border from Burma for care.
Mae Tao Clinic Objectives:
1. To provide health services for displaced Burmese populations along the Thailand-Burma border.
2. To provide initial training of health workers and subsequent corollary medical education.
3. To strengthen health information systems along the border.
4. To improve health, knowledge, attitudes, and practices within local Burmese populations.
5. To promote collaboration among local ethnic health organizations.
6. To strengthen networking and partnering with international health professionals and institutions.

To Support Displaced Youth from Fallujah
Inauguration of Temporary Premises of Fallujah University (Dorms and Classrooms)
in Abu Ghraib, Baghdad
On 23 June 2016, the temporary premises of Fallujah University, located inside the Veterinary College, Baghdad University in Abu Ghraib, were inaugurated. With the generous contribution from the Government of Japan, the temporary premises of Fallujah University were established by the United Nations Human Settlements Programme (UN-Habitat) providing 25 classrooms and 128 residential units that can accommodate 512 students, in addition to basic site infrastructure and an administration building. The project aimed at supporting displaced youth who bear enormous and long-lasting human, social and economic costs.
His Excellency Mr. Sohaib Al-Rawi, Governor of Anbar, who attended the event, commented that while the Anbar Governorate has been supporting institutions displaced by violence outside and within Anbar, including Fallujah University, the ongoing financial crisis has affected all aspects of people’s lives and limited the government’s capacity to support. The Governor acknowledged the efforts of UN agencies and the ongoing support of UN-Habitat on housing self-repair and shelter projects within Ramadi. He expressed his gratitude to all those who stand with people of Iraq, and specifically of Fallujah, in the midst of the hardship they face.
On UN-Habitat’s side, Dr. Erfan Ali, Head of Iraq Programme, pointed out that lack of access to education among youth is one of the key factors that fuel a cycle of poverty, hopelessness and frustration. He expressed his hope that these new premises of Fallujah University will enable young women and men from Fallujah to continue their education and play an active role as agents of positive and constructive change.
Mr. Hirofumi Miyake, Chargé d'Affaires ad interim, Embassy of Japan in Iraq, stated that Japan also has its own internally displaced persons, resulting from disasters of tsunamis, earthquakes, debris, and the latest nuclear accident, and therefore the people of Japan understand very well the importance of support to displaced persons in Iraq. He further emphasized that Japan will continue to sustain the efforts of UN-Habitat to improve the living conditions of the displaced persons in Iraq.
Dr. Ibraheem Abdulkareem, Deputy President of Fallujah University, stated that the completion of the new premises of Fallujah University has provided a glimpse of hope in the heart of displaced students, and he recognized that the inauguration is concomitant to the liberation of Fallujah.
On his part, Mr. Sattar Nawroz Khan, General Director of Migration at the Ministry of Migration and Displacement, praised the joint cooperation and partnership between multiple actors, including the Governments of Iraq and Japan, Anbar Governorate, Fallujah University, and UN-Habitat, that enabled the positive results of the overall project.
This project was implemented within the framework of larger programme titled “Humanitarian Support to Internally Displaced Persons in Iraq through Provision of Durable Shelter,” funded by the Government of Japan, aiming to improve the living conditions of internally displaced persons in Iraq through the provision of prefabricated durable shelters, and thereby to support and strengthen their self reliance.
