The old buildings and the new grain storage tanks signify generations on the land. Australia's first and only Nobel Prize winner for Literature, Patrick White (1912-1990), wrote of these experiences in what some consider his greatest novel: The Tree of Man (1955).
patrickwhitecatalogue.com/novels/tree/
I remember studying Patrick White in high school literature classes in the 1970s, just after he'd been awarded the Nobel Prize in 1973. It was often jokingly said (but with a grain of truth) that he was Australia's greatest unread novelist. Sadly, that statement is even more true today. lithub.com/on-patrick-white-australias-great-unread-novel...
But then that is true of most quality literature in this almost post-literary age. The book and literature remains the essential lifeblood of culture however, as it was long ago for the Greeks with Homer. Americans spent much of the 20th century looking for the "great American novel". And perhaps Patrick White's The Tree of Man comes close to that in Australian terms. The only writer I consider in his category of literary importance in the past 70 years of Australian writing is David Malouf, to whom White was a great mentor and friend. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/David_Malouf
In the case of White and Malouf, the key elements are a deep understanding of the historical currents that shape a culture, and an intuitive sense of the poetic.
But let me conclude with a memory of Patrick White - the man. I once heard him speak in 1983 at LaTrobe University in Melbourne. He packed out the largest lecture theatre and addressed what he considered the most critical issue of the day: Nuclear Disarmament. Patrick White inspired us that day, not because he was obsessively political. But as a man of passion who spoke of a deep sadness at how the world that once imagined greatness like Homer, could be reduced to shrilled rats in a cage fearful that one of the superpowers would drop the bomb.
I will never forget that speech as long as I live. Here was a man proving why literature is still important and that we dismiss it at our eternal peril. We are now entrusted to care for the very land our ancestors passed down to us. Let us not fail in that duty.
An Ex-Mannequin? An Ex-Machina? She seems to have already superpowers... :)
To the previous double exposure I added some textures (Analog Efex 2).
It's that time of year when you need your superpowers...well what better time to slip into this awsome dress and feel like a goddess divine?

Of the 39 members of the Pere Marquette's fleet of Superpower Berkshires, only two examples remain-- #1225, restored to operating condition by the Michigan State Trust for Railway Preservation, Inc., and #1223, cosmetically restored and displayed at the Tri-Cities Historical Society museum site in Grand Haven, MI. In fact, of the entire fleet of steam locomotives operated by the Pere Marquette, only these two engines escaped the scrapper's torch. A third Berkshire, #1227, was offered to the City of Grand Rapids for display at John Ball Park, but the city's Parks and Recreation Department declined the offer, and she was sent to the scrapper.
Number 1223's history, while not as well known as sister #1225's, is interesting nonetheless. Constructed in November, 1941, she served the PM moving heavy wartime traffic, and with her sisters pulled the PM's premiere expedited freights, numbers 40 and 41, The Overnighter, on their tight nine-and-a-half hour schedule between Chicago and Detroit, via Grand Rapids. This service was not only competitive against trucks connecting Chicago and Detroit, but given the state of the highway system prior to 1950, was unbeatable!
At just over 400 tons, the N-1 class Berkshires were not quite the heaviest power on the PM, being outweighed by the booster-equipped members of the N class (#1211-1215), and all of the engines of the N-2 class (#1228-1239). They steamed well, and generated a respectable 69,350 pounds of tractive effort at the railhead. Their weight, however, restricted them (as well as all of the other Berkshires) to operating on the lines from Toledo to Saginaw, from Detroit to Grand Rapids, and from Grand Rapids to Chicago.
Number 1223 was retired in late 1951. Despite having been assigned C&O number 2657 following the merger, she retained her number up to retirement. Following a quick shopping and a repainting into C&O livery, she was donated for display at the Michigan State Fairgrounds, where she remained on display behind the grandstands until 1981. While on display, her grease cellars were traded to the Michigan State Trust for Railroad Preservation to aid the restoration of sister #1225 in East Lansing, Several similar Superpower Berkshires of C&O and Nickel Plate heritage displayed throughout the Great Lakes region also provided parts for that effort.
In 1980, the State Fair administration decided that #1223 no longer fit into their plans for development of the fairgrounds, and offered it for display elsewhere. Several groups and individuals made offers to remove #1223, with the City of Grand Haven making the winning bid. In 1981, with the help of the Michigan National Guard using panel track, #1223 was moved to the nearby Grand Trunk Western mainline for shipment to Grand Haven, a city she had never visited while in service on account of her extreme (by PM standards, at least!) weight.
Upon arrival in Grand Haven, #1223 was moved to the site of the former Grand Trunk Western yard along the Grand River, at the intersection of North Harbor Drive and First Street. Over the succeeding years, she was joined by ex-Pere Marquette steel caboose #A986 and ex-GTW caboose #77915. In 1982, the West Michigan Railroad Historical Society acquired PM steel boxcar #72222, cosmetically restored it, and donated it to the restoration effort for use as both part of the display, and as enclosed storage space.
The Pere Marquette 1223 Preservation Committee, working under the auspices of the Tri-Cities Historical Society, accepted responsibililty for making #1223 presentable again, and for maintaining her. The many years of hard work by these volunteers has paid off, as the photo shows. Much sheet metal was replaced, and the cab completely rebuilt. Missing parts were acquired or fabricated so as to give her the appearance of a complete locomotive. As a compromise due to her exposed display (a protective shed promised by a previous city administration never materialized), #1223 currently wears a fabricated headlight and number boards and lacks her original builders plates, as protection against theft. Presently, #1223 and her consist are a very handsome display. An ex-PM wig-wag signal is mounted nearby to add to the atmosphere.
On December 7, 2000, #1223 was placed on the National Register of historic places.

This Super Flower Moon on May 7 is in Scorpio — 🌝♏💜
That means it'll bring up some strong feelings.
Anyone who's spent time with a Scorpio can attest that this sign is best summed up in one word: "intense." As a Scorpio myself, I can confirm that all of the rumors are true. The majority of us are often highly emotional, passionate, and loyal. We can also be suspicious and have a deep need for control.
Scorpio's strength comes from the sign's superpower: rebirth. Each zodiac sign has a corresponding card. Scorpio's is the Death card, which is highly misunderstood and not to be taken literally. It refers to the moment in which one allows themself to rise from the ashes like a Phoenix, to be reborn into an even more powerful form....

Sometimes I think working with ND filters to stretch the boundaries of time is kind of like having super powers. But if that is true, then they are powers available to all of us. And I must express my gratitude for having ready access to them. They can take something relatively ordinary and change it to something extraordinary in a matter of seconds.
But here are some thoughts I have to share behind this image.
It was an 8 second exposure made with JCH Streetpan 400. I rated the film at ISO 200 with the intent to pull it in developing. This film can be quite harsh when shot and processed per standard recommendations but I have really become fond of it when shot at ISO 200 (over exposed by a stop) and then under developed by one stop. It adds shadow detail and reins in the contrast.
As I said, this was an 8 second exposure. It was the best I could seemingly do with only an R72 IR filter. I had some serious NDs but I didn't want to use them in conjunction with my R72 because then the exposure would have been several minutes. I did do that for other images but wanted to actually see the ghosts of people, which a multi-minute exposure would have blurred away.
But I felt like 8 seconds was too short. Too many of these people were standing too still for an 8 second exposure. So what I did was open the shutter, count off 1 second, place the lens cap on, wait 5-10 seconds, remove the lens cap and count off another second, repeat. In this way I stretched that 8 second exposure out to something resembling a 30-45 second exposure. It gave me the combination of blur and definition that I was hoping for. And yes, I was thinking of Alexey Titarenko's wonderful photography while working on this.
It also really helps to be familiar with the film you are using. My past experiences with infrared film told me the blossoms would be snowy white and the branches would stand out in stark contrast. It was those two branches in the top of the frame that caught my eye and guided me to setting up this competition. They made the photo, and my familiarity with knowing how IR would look helped me recognize that.
And when you put all this together, crowds mean something quite different... as done time I suppose. I like how this photo turned out quite a bit, but what I like even more was the ability to turn the Quad at University of Washington into a scene like this. As I said, it is like a super power.

2019 – the year the story of Akira takes place. To honour this “grandfather” of mangas and animes, the one film that in the USA and in Europe drew the attention to Japanese comic culture, which was – until then (1988) – derided as simple entertainment for children, I decided to build a new Akira MOC.
This one differs a bit from the anime, which is also a bit different from the manga. I did this to match my former Akira MOC or more specifically, the custom Tetsuo minifigure. In this scene, Tetsuo tries to find Akira’s containment unit and gets attacked.
Dedicated to Denis Franke. I hope you are well, wherever you are.

The Winters Fire Department in Winters, California (Yolo County) used to run this 1966 White 4264SF with bodywork by built by the fire department in 1967. It had a 500-GPM pump, a 90-GPM PTO pump and a 1000-gallon water tank.
In the early 2000's, the Winters FD website showed it as still in service. Elsewhere in my photostream is a low-quality photo that I shot of it when I stumbled upon it in 2003 or so.
Much to our delight, the Baltimore Oriole is still here!!! We see him almost every day, but getting shots of him is very tricky.
It's like he has superpowers to sense when one of us is at the "birdwatching" window, and will not fly over to the mealworm feeder if he sees us.
This afternoon, no too long after filling the mealworm feeder for a second time, we spotted him from the window over the kitchen sink. So, with camera in hand, I'm leaning over the sink, trying to get shots through the branches of the bush right outside that window. Then the Brown Thrasher flew up and chased the Oriole out of the feeder, so he perched in this Rose of Sharon tree for a few minutes, where I was able to get some shots that weren't feeder shots.
The Orioles that have shown up in the past usually left in early March, so this may have been our final sighting. Fingers crossed he'll stick around for another few days, but only time will tell.
Sitting patiently awaiting further work, Boston & Maine pacific #3713 sits ready for a second life as the primary road engine of the Steamtown National Historic Site. Built by Lima in 1934, she is not a superpower design like some of her bigger sisters, the NKP S2 Berkshires, but she is definitely one of the biggest pacifics being returned to operation in the United States. Her restoration began in 1994.
The seagulls at Sítio in Nazaré fly really close to you and they're really fun to photograph. Bird photography is something I'm not usually good at, but that day I got a few that made me think that I could freeze time :D What about you, what's your superpower? :)
EDIT: It has come to my attention that some may think this is a manipulated photo. I abhor photo manipulation - and I have the RAW files to prove it :)

"Luxembourg has always been a country that has tried to reinvent its own future." Etienne Schneider.
In the center of Europe, between France and Germany (also bordering with Belgium), there is a small country that is today the richest in the world. The Grand Duchy of Luxembourg has always received the cultural influence of the two neighboring superpowers, which is why French and German are official languages alongside Luxembourgish. Despite its small size, Luxembourg was a key country in the founding of the European Union, being Luxembourg City named headquarters of the European Court of Justice and one of the 4 official capitals of Europe.
The history of Luxembourg City is really interesting, from the Middle Ages to the beginning of the 20th century, it had to face numerous wars and assaults, hence a good part of the city is protected by the orography of the land. Its beautiful historical center is recognized by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site. Today it is a pleasure to stroll through its clean streets between beautiful churches and elegant ocher, beige and yellow buildings, all with lovely slate roofs. From the Citadel of the Holy Spirit you can see one of the best views of the city, with the old part occupying most of the scene, in addition to some skyscrapers on the horizon remembering that Luxembourg has always reinvented itself, being today one of the main financial centers of the world, reason to which it owes a large part of its current wealth.
-------------------------------------------
To look at a thing with no malice, ill will, or prejudice that is a child’s superpower . As an adult do you still hold on to some childlike characteristics? 😊👌✌️

Now I am considering my art in these days as part of a big “photo-diary from the other side” or maybe the project “Closing Time”. It seems that the way from North Venice to North Korea could be short and fast. But I have the unique opportunity to show the life in the country which floats away at full speed in some other dimensions. The newest example:
In Tomsk, a court fined a man 30,000 rubles for "silent support" of an anti-war rally.
“Taras Maksimovich Kulikov, being in a group of citizens who had gathered for a rally, realizing that those gathered were united by a single plan to undermine confidence in the decisions of state authorities […], expressed tacit support for the illegal goals of the event and solidarity with active participants in the illegal public event,” the statement reads.
Meanwhile in Moscow, the court fined Dmitry Reznikov 50 thousand rubles. Reznikov came out with a poster, which was literally the following: "*** *****" (in English - “** ***”).
I’ve discovered the superpower to feel the war by the measure of the pressure which I’m experiencing, leaking of the energy and so on (and the war is right here in Russia as well, and we aren’t even deep in the rear; the appearance could change, but its essence is the same, insane).
That’s all for today and with the series “Sometimes I feel like a motherless child A long way from my home”. I have a lot more. I just feel that not posting everyday is better. Am I right or wrong about this, what do you think?
