One of these monarchs transformed his realm into a flourishing superpower , renowned for its wealth, scholarship, and cultural influence. His reign was widely admired, and his legacy endured for centuries. The other, a visionary dreamer, struggled with political realities and finances, ultimately losing his crown under tragic and mysterious circumstances. Today, however, his romantic castles remain iconic landmarks, attracting millions of visitors from around the world...

The last few days I was reminded that my travel through Central Asia also involved a long drive along the Afghanistan border, and I still remember my feelings about that drive. The other side was always near, and sometimes (like in this shot) not further away than 100 meter or so. It was like looking into an other world, (it was clear that Afghanistan was and is a country very poor compared to even Tajikistan), a forbidden world too. Although at that time it would have been possible to go into it, we were told that because of the situation in that area, it was wiser not to go. We were dreaming of driving that part, but as you can see, the shape of it means a hell of a drive.
This shot here shows a group workmen who are working on the road on the other side. My thoughts about what happens and happened in Afghanistan the last few decades are going in all sorts of directions. Poverty, politics, the role of the superpowers, and the role of religion on the one side, and on the other side friendly people everywhere. Why can't we live in peace?
20 September 2019 I came back from my journey over a part of the Silk Road to and through Central Asia. 4 months of traveling through 14 countries (Germany, Austria, Hungary, Romania, Turkey, Georgia, Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan, Kirgizstan, Tajikistan, Uzbekistan, Turkmenistan, Iran) before I flew home from Teheran. An impressive journey in countries that are extremely beautiful, with lovely and welcoming people and diverse cultures and history.
Intense traveling with more than 20000 kilometers in our mobile home on sometimes roads that hardly could be called that way. We saw many villages and cities (some wonderful, others very ugly), countries that are transforming from the old Soviet era into something more related to older cultures and the way people live, often funded by oil readily available around the Caspian sea. We saw the amazing mountains south of the Black Sea, the wonderful Caucasus, and the high mountains in the far east close to China with peaks over 7000 meter, and not to forget the (Bulgarian) Alps!
We crossed the great steppe of Kazakhstan. a drive of at least 5000 km, the remnants of lake Aral, once one of the biggest lakes of the world, saw a rocket launch from Baikonur (this little part is Russian owned), we crossed many high mountains passes, and drove the breathtaking canyon that comes from the Pamir, beginning at ca 4500 meter, and going down for ca. 400km to an altitude of 1300 meter, driving for 100's of kilometers along the Afghan border.
And then the numerous lakes with all sorts of different colors from deep cobalt blue to turquoise, and one rare spectacle in Turkmenistan where a gas crater is burning already for more than 40 years. And finally and certainly not the least to mention an enormous amount of wonderful, hospitable and welcoming

Roman Province of Italia (Modern Day Italy)
What started as a small city state and a regional republic, became one of the most powerful empires the world had ever seen.
At the Roman Empires greatest extant in 117 A.D. the empire stretched from Portugal to Armenia and from England to Egypt. The entire empire had control of the Mediterranean sea which enabled it to wipe out piracy and create more trade routes. Rome was as prosperous as ever before with a good transportation system, standard of living (for the ancient world), professional soldiers keeping barbarians at bay etc. Rome was a "world" superpower.
Rome did have its problems which would only become worse as time went on. These problems will be seen in the next version ;)

It's like you got superpowers
Turn my minutes into hours
You got more than 20-20, babe
Made of glass the way you see through me
You know me better than I do
Can't seem to keep nothing from you
How you touch my soul from the outside?
Permeate my ego and my pride
Apparently I have developed the ability to juggle lights in the woods at night! I had been pestering my boyfriend to teach me some more of the basics of night photography/light painting......and this is the result!

This tiny creature, only about 8" long from tip of nose to tip of tail, seems to be everywhere here in California and has a very special power.
It is the most common lizard through the American Southwest, up through California, Oregon and into Washington. They love to sun themselves on rocks, tops of fences and heat-radiating sidewalks. They are also fast. As soon as they sense movement, they are gone in a blur.
Their superpower is that they are immune to Lyme disease. Once a Lyme-carrying tick bites them, a protein in the lizard's blood kills the bacteria. Areas with large populations of Western Fence lizards also have the lowest incidence of Lyme disease. Only 2% of adult ticks in California carry Lyme disease as compared to nearly 50% in the northeastern US.
You could assume, therefore, the more lizards, the fewer Lyme infections. Surprisingly, in an area where the lizard was deliberately removed (Mar-Apr 2008, UC Berkeley study), the number of infected ticks dropped dramatically, reducing the risk to humans.
It seems this lizard is not the answer to eradicating Lyme disease.

This was my first choice for the Crazy Tuesday theme of this week, even if I was very undecided about it.
In any case, I hope that you will like this pic, dear friends! :-)

"I'm pretty convinced my camera has superpowers. It staves off depression when it shows me how raindrops on a spider web glisten like diamonds, it wards off my evil hermit-like tendencies when I am out and about, and it gives me a sense of purpose when I have forgotten my place in this world. "
Christy Hydeck
And I'm pretty convinced that I could have written these words myself. Driving to work today, on a misty foggy morning, I noticed, along an entire stretch of road, many spider webs glistening between the parallel power lines, and even more where there were lamp posts. I wondered if all the years of carrying a camera around and seeing through the lens had trained my eyes to notice such things. I wondered who else would notice this on their drive to work. It was really quite amazing. So, when I got to work... I asked .... no one had seen the spider webs. Hmmm.... and I'm pretty certain that had I had my camera in the car with me this morning, I would have been late for work and I can't imagine how other people didn't notice!
My camera has trained me to make the best of all types of weather and conditions and to find amazing things when other may see nothing. My camera has brought me some special friendships, has taken me to interesting places and has kept me company when I am alone. My camera has taught me to see the beauty in everyday things. Yes, my camera, too.... has superpowers!
A church cat naps inside the old colonial chapel of St. James Santee Episcopal Church at Wambaw, otherwise known as the Brick Church at Wambaw (Creek). This church largely served the area's French Huguenot immigrant population. It was built in 1768 on a section of the once-named King's Highway, which is a dirt road now called Old Georgetown Road.
Sorry King George III. Your position and country were stripped off. Revolted against. Excommunicated. Your title, king, was removed from our colleges and roads in hope that we would never have a king (think despot or dictator) again. There was a time that we liked thinking of ourselves as British. But you and the flawed representation and design of the British parliament were not remembered fondly in these parts. These were remembered even worse for bad colonial representation. An unruly bunch accustomed to considerable liberties, Americans were way too much for you and your political system to handle, although we would be remiss if we did not thank you and your system for providing an appreciation and foundation of representative government. We would have to go it alone. Yours and France's political thought-leaders in addition to our own helped inspire us as we built a framework. An experimental Republic was painstakingly designed and built over the old British commonwealth and its constitutional monarchy model in hope of a quantum leap forward of what the British Isles had or would have. After Britain fought not once but twice to keep us, you can understand that American anger against kings, parliament, and the rising superpower empire of colonizing Britain was especially raw. Even the Anglican church found it necessary to discard their Britishness and change its name here to Episcopal if they wanted to have Americans in their congregations. It turns out they did.
"Sweet flowers are slow and weeds make haste."
William Shakespeare
It's a stranger and wonderful world. I have discovered that so many invasive weeds are some of my favorite plants.
I realize that English Ivy, when contained, can bring joy with their rich green leaves and flowers that bloom twice a year. This is especially important in the lives of pollinating insects and some butterflies.
Additionally, where else in the world are you going to find a plant that resembles a Sputnik chandelier, with a nod to the Russian satellite, the world's first which was launched into space in 1957, kicking off the Space Race among the global superpowers.

Well, finally it was my turn for receiving the Covid-19 vaccine. Behind the mask, I am smiling in this selfie. This is the beginning of the end of this pandemic. I hope that soon all of you will get the vaccine, my dear flickr-friends.
So far, I haven't feel any superpowers, any 5G internet connection, any extra wifi spots, just another happy human being with an additional beskar armor in my left arm and part of the herd immunity!
The Mission: youtu.be/ntMfdlMD6Oo
I stumbled into an American military expert, author of two widely quoted books, who holds the following satirical view :
" America's involvement into this bloody mess in the Middle East is understandable--it is wrong, often criminal, but it is understandable. Superpower's rah-rah, "best friend" Israel and shit of this nature, but UK in this whole thing is a comical entity, trying to address its phantom pains of Great Empire of the past so desperately that it is comical. Make no mistake, London City, banks, all this glory of the sun never setting on the empire, in the end--English Premiere League--try to counter this. The best, undeniably, league in the world, way better than La Liga or Bundesliga, and there is no denial of that. London still retains its Victorian grandeur in some places, where they are still able to maintain at least some acceptable norms of public safety and sanitation, but writing is on the wall. No matter how legendary and beloved Manchester United, or Liverpool, or Chelsea are for many around the globe, UK is a basket case economically, culturally and militarily.
London may have some money, for now, it has no real international subjectivity and is in a perpetual search for this dopamine-laced feeling of self-importance and if it is by pretending that UK matters by means of support for all kinds of human trash, I am sure heirs to James Bond's glory will do it maintaining their stiff upper lip. I don't know if they know at the 10 Downing Street that they are pathetic, but the reality of UK is simply sad--it becomes fast a totalitarian state which is drowning in political correctness, UK's economy is in tatters (wink, wink, if you know what I mean):
London (CNN Business)UK economic output shrank by 20.4% in the second quarter of 2020, the worst quarterly slump on record, pushing the country into the deepest recession of any major global economy. This crash in GDP in the April-June period, compared with the first quarter, is the worst since quarterly records began in 1955. Industries most exposed to government lockdown measures to contain the coronavirus pandemic — services, production and construction — saw record drops.
If one discards some famous UK manufacturing brands such as still relevant Rolls-Royce or some other aerospace elements tied into BAE Systems, there is very little, frankly, to talk about what UK produces anymore and what has any global trade impact by being competitive. The times of British glorious and highly relevant and viable national aerospace industry are gone forever, UK cannot anymore out of own resources and talent produce world-class combat jet, nor can she do it for a commercial aircraft, being fully integrated into Airbus "family" owning 20% stake with other 80% belonging to EADS. What else, what else... Ah, British Armed Forces are a joke. Today British Army numbers a whopping 79,000 of regular personnel and is getting ready to abandon tanks as a viable combined arms element altogether. Once glorious and legendary Royal Navy has enough ships and subs to demonstrate flag and, maybe, win another Falkland campaign against grossly inferior power, granted its two aircraft carriers will be able to deploy enough F-35Bs to the theater, but that is about it. In other words, UK is a military and economic backwater and I say this with a degree of sorrow. I, as many of my peers, grew up with great British literature, indeed, unique and massive British contribution in science, culture and other fields of human activity. Come on, we grew up with Beatles, Deep Purple and some quirky, and wonderful, British movies. In the end, Great Britain was our second most important ally in WW II. That Britain is no more.
UK's trade balance is a negative 130 billion Pounds, the most popular boy's name in London is Mohamed, and in general things look so...promising for this once prosperous Kingdom that desperation is in the air. So, what's left? Right, try to play games adults play, get into chihuahua mode and get into the middle of the fight of mastiffs. How? Easy, you just read about it--make a stink that everyone notices you, that you are relevant, that you still can influence the events in the world and this may make a phantom pain of a gone greatness less acute. As for hundreds of thousands killed and millions displaced--no price is too high, because it is for the bloody greater good... "

Spring is coming at the speed of color… and, since color is light, that’s pretty fast. You’d better get out of the way! This is not only big, bold primary color, it’s complementary color. Remember Billy Crystal as Fernando? “You look mahhvelous!” Yes, read it the way it’s spelled… and then, “To look good is to feel good, dahhling!” That’s complimentary, but it’s not complementary. Do you remember learning about the color wheel? Colors on opposite sides of the wheel are complementary, or harmonizing. It involves a bit of science as to how the various photoreceptors in your eyes perceive contrastive colors… your brain just goes along with the ride and is quite often happy to do so. The most contrastive of the complementary colors are yellow/blue and red/green. Such colors have superpowers, able to lift one from a deep funk in a single bound! Hmmm… that seems familiar for some reason. The “deep funk” of winter’s grays and browns go ‘poof’ in the light of spring’s color BOOM.
This image was taken April 20th of 2013 at Biltmore gardens. It’s shot from the ground up with a polarizing filter to take out reflective color. Reflective color… that’s a story for another time. The floor is now open for complimentary discussion… go!
A new series by me coming soon! What do you think about the idea? Is it good or bad? Who would you like to see appear in it? Thanks!

Our day has come
It's drawn in the sky
So, don't shed a tear now
Be thankful for the time
Life wouldn't be so precious, dear, if there never was an end
___
What would anything mean if you lived forever? If there was no urgency to do anything, would you still do it?
Remember that every moment is a gift and don't take life for granted. Trying to see the good when things get hard is definitely a challenge, but your mind has a superpower when it comes to processing things.
What seems impossible now might be something you look back to in the future and wonder why did you even worry.
Make the best of what you have and look forward, because that's the only direction you can take in life. Memento Mori.

All empires decline. It is just a matter of time. Since several years, we assist to the fall of several superpowers and the re-distribution of the geopolitical forces. It seems that the empire has begun to sink in the muddy fields of oil...

I wanted to make this post, because it feels like the only thing thats left to be done.
But now, here I am and I have absolutely no fucking idea where to begin.
Reading Paxs Massage about you shocked me. It still does, every time I think about it, every time I talk to him, every time I open my laptop.
When I open my Discord, I see your last message to me. It is, until this day, unopened.
I remember seeing it right after you send it to me and I ignored it. At that time, I ignored everything and everyone. I didnt reply to anybody because I was in a really bad state.
I know you werent mad with me about it. Because you knew how I felt those days, you knew what was going on with me and you would have been patient until return.
No matter what it says, I know, it would have been the perfect thing to say in that moment. Because that was your superpower.
You always knew what to say to me to make me feel better and in the end, I would always smile.
Abi, I don't even know how to live a SL without you anymore.
Not sure if I want to.
I miss you, always did... just didnt think I would ever loose the ability to talk to you completely.
I hope you are happy, whereever you are
Rest in Peace, my love

At Yorktown, Americans defeated the rising superpower of Britain’s military and the extended arms of Britain’s crappy government, thanks to the tremendous help of America’s ally, France.
The National Park Service says of Yorktown, "Here at Yorktown, in the fall of 1781, General George Washington, with allied American and French forces, besieged General Charles Lord Cornwallis’s British army. On October 19, Cornwallis surrendered, effectively ending the [Revolutionary] war and ensuring [American] independence."
[This is my photo of the Yorktown Battlefield in Virginia. The British flag shows how close British troops were. The Americans were on the near side of the wooden fence. There are considerable earthworks here.]
