Living in the desert, I don't often root for the sun to appear.

On our trip to Sedona, nearby Cathedral Rock prevented the sun from beating down early in the day. Since the morning low was around 30° when I began my daily hike, I was actually glad by the time when it was finally able to warm me up.

This beauty decided to pass between the sun and me at the bridge. Turned day into night. I didn't even bother to reduce the shadows in post. It's the unmistakable silhouette of a .....

The clouds are completely natural. Only crop done was to change it to the 16x9 format.

337/365 -Around the house - Day 337

After stopping by gallery at Santa Monica Airport to check out the last day of an exhibition of some friends' work...I decided to shoot the Venice Pier.

I thought I'd get shut out by the sun as the marine layer was rolling in, but just at the last moment, the clouds on the horizon lifted, and there was a hint of color peaking through.

I think the Venice Pier looks very industrial -- kind of otherworldly. The weather that day really really emphasized that impression to me -- almost as if the sun was being held prisoner behind the pilings of the pier, with the starfish holding on for dear life.

Martin, the James' Butler: Shall we review your mother's list?

Annie: Mm-hmm.

Martin, the James' Butler: Now, let's see. Vitamins?

Annie: Check.

Martin, the James' Butler: Minerals?

Annie: Check.

Martin, the James' Butler: List of daily fruits and vegetables?

Annie: Check, check.

[Martin glances at Annie]

Annie: Check for fruits, check for vegetables. Go on.

Martin, the James' Butler: Sunblock, lip balm, insect repellent, stationery, stamps, photographs of your mother, grandfather, and of course, your trusty butler, me.

Annie: Got it all, I think.

Martin, the James' Butler: Oh, and here's a little something from your grandfather.

[Holds up a deck of cards]

Martin, the James' Butler: Spanking new deck of cards. Maybe you'll actually find someone on this continent who can whip your tush at poker.

Annie: Well, I doubt it, but thanks, Martin.

Yesterday I took my wife to Redondo Beach. We spent the day just walking on the sand, playing in the water and taking tons of pictures. Doesn't this photo remind you of the Little Mermaid? My wife loves that movie and she is always singing...

Up where they walk, up where they run, up where they play all day in the sun...

...and that's what we did. We played all day in the sun. Ouch, we forgot sunblock.

My niece Heather put her own sunblock on

I suppose that this should really go in my wife's photostream, but she isn't really that interested in flickr the way I am. (I know, sacrilege! :-)

Do you have any idea how difficult it is to pose whilst wearing skis! :-)

The Rock and the Tree: This rock and tree are the perfect couple in Lassen Volcanic National Park. They both hang out on the edge of a cliff, and the rock provides the perfect sunblock for capturing the beauty of a back-lit pine tree.

A beautiful, remote and culturally rich country infamous for its military regime, Myanmar (Burma) has in recent years been making small steps towards democracy, with the first democratically elected government in 2015, after more than half a century.

Modern conveniences, such as mobile-phone coverage and internet access, are now common, however for all the recent changes, Myanmar remains at heart a rural nation of traditional values - though one may have hard time to find someone among the younger generation without a smartphone or Facebook profile.

One will still encounter men wearing the sarong-like longyi and chewing betel nut, spitting the blood-red juice onto the ground, women with faces smothered in thanakha (a natural sunblock), and cheroot-smoking grannies. Trishaws still ply city streets, while the horse or bullock and cart is common rural transport.

We carefully planned our 3-weeks long Burmese adventure around 6-days long hiking trip in the remote Chin state, where we commenced our journey in the hilltop settlement of Mindat, and subsequently hiked for four days across ethnic minority villages using old footpaths and mule trails.

Besides that, Bagan was the obvious spot to spend a few days exploring its temples, and we also spent a few days more in the south around Hpa-An. Then, finally, Ngapali was the ultimate destination for our beach leisure time.

sunblock was not reqired this summers day

Two important sun safety items for spending long periods of time out in the sun: a UPF 50 hat and a bottle of SPF 50 sunscreen. It's much better than looking and feeling like a boiled lobster later on, never mind the health risks of a sunburn.

NOTE TO MR. BLOCKY FACE WITH NO PHOTOS TO SHARE:

Go away. I've blocked you 20+ times for faving this shot alone.... please save me (and yourselves) the time and don't fave my shots.

You have to have tea (although I can't stand Sweet Tea !!! ) , sunblock, Dr. Pepper, Tiaras, and hot dogs.

Oh... for the sake of the children, I didn't show you the Adult Beverages :)

We went to a friend's Birthday Party today....

Mon Bridge in Sangkhlaburi

Sangkhlaburi's iconic, 447m-long wooden bridge, the largest in Thailand, connects the main town, home mostly to Thai and Karen, with the Mon settlement. This village (officially it's Ban Wang Ka, but even residents just call it Ban Mon: 'Mon Village') is a striking place to explore, peopled by cheroot-smoking women, sarong-wearing men and faces covered in thanaka (a yellow paste made from tree bark, used both as sunblock and decoration).

At the Mon end of the bridge is a souvenir market selling Karen shirts and dresses among other things. Follow the street uphill from the bridge and turn left on the main road to visit the Mon market, which is refreshingly free of souvenirs.

Giving morning alms to monks (at 6.30am) is a big event on the Mon side of the bridge. Tourists (mostly from Bangkok) donate from fancy trays alongside locals who stick to the Mon tradition of giving just a scoop of rice. During Buddhist festivals alms are offered on the bridge.

MtvU Sunblock Fest - 7/27/08

This day I decided to go to the beach at Ramla Bay, about 20 minutes away by bus from my hotel. The route included a lot of mountainous hairpin turns that made me anxious.

Once there, the beach was wonderful! I had a burger at the little beach shack (they call them beef burgers on Malta, not hamburgers), and lazed in sun and water for a couple hours. I didn't have a book or an umbrella or sunblock (!), and I ended up leaving after two hours, but with no regrets.

Meet the outside of Paris Arab World Institute and what is probably one of the most inovative and expensive facades ever.

The reason for it being that there's a mechanism opening or closing the round gaps on display depending on how much the sun is shining maintaining a cool temperature and atmosphere inside the building.

Gorgeously fancy.

It seems, my fine flickr friends, that trees and 8 degree temperatures do not agree with me and I have been a bit fluey since my trip to the Blue Mountains last weekend. I have been off work most of the week sick and no photograph stuff of any kind has taken place. Yesterday I was so bored and sick of lying on the sofa watching netflix I thought it may be time to give my cameras a bit of healthcare too - and its normally so darn difficult as all the photo repair places are difficult to get to on weekends and are also closed.

I popped Ms. Nikon in for a sensor clean and Ms. Olympus has been checked in to her biological family for a 2 week overhaul as there is a problem with the shutter button.

When I picked up Ms. Nikon - the 'Doctor' said be careful with her now and no dropping/ocean spray/sand - I am not so confident that I can follow the Doctors orders on that one ;) .

This was taken down at Bondi on the misty morning we had a few weeks ago with Ms. Olympus. She is like a crab and loves hovering down near the ocean and the waves and getting in to all sorts of nooks and cranny's (as she is weathersealed and it appears Olympus had built this camera specially for me ;)) and I can flip her screen and get some very cool silhouette shots .

Sunblock not needed much anymore now as autumn is most certainly here and I have 4 days off and hopefully will be up for sunrise tomorrow and get my Vitamin Sea (groan...but it had to be said ;)) which I know will get me back into full health . :) I will have time also to pop in to see your wonderful shots.
