Thought I’d head out and find a Rose this morning since I’m confined to the neighborhood as the result of a bit of required surgery. Too much beach time and too little sunblock can do that to you. Found this little jewel in the garden of the local church.

Meet the Chuckwalla: A sun-loving lizard of the Southwest! Found from southern California to northern Mexico, these desert dwellers can grow up to 16 inches long. Herbivores at heart, they feast on flowers, leaves, and fruit, with a side of cactus when available. Males often sport a reddish band along their sides or tails, especially during breeding season. It’s part fashion statement, part warning, used to attract mates or stake out territory.

Big healthy ones! The lowest are at ~1 ft above the low tide line -- so only occasionally out of the water. Biggest of these are ~8 in/20 cm in diameter. It's rare to see this many on a near-vertical wall. They generally prefer tide pools. These are using small beach pebbles and coarse sand as 'sunblock' and to avoid dehydration while out of water.
……Thought it was about time we went on holiday, grab your bucket & spade, your sunblock and your shades and come with me to Kynance Cove - look the beach is empty, the tide is perfect and the sea so inviting. And all that whilst still being securely ‘Locked Down’ AT HOME to stay safe and also to NOT be a vehicle to the virus - Covid-19 does not have legs (or wings) Alan:-)

... is a special day to celebrate the world’s third-largest mammal. It’s also a day to learn more about the hippopotamus.
The blue whale and the African elephant are the only two mammals in the world that are larger than the hippopotamus. The word hippo translates to river horse in ancient Greek. The giant animal weighs a whopping 3,600 kg (8,000 lbs). There is only one continent in the world you can find a hippo. That continent is Africa. Hippos are native to over 30 countries in Africa. These herbivores live up to 50 years in the wild. There are only two species of hippos on the planet. These include the common hippopotamus and the pygmy hippo.
Here are some more interesting facts about the hippopotamus:
- They secrete an oily red substance on their skin, which acts as sunblock and a moisturizer.
- Hippos spend up to 16 hours a day submerged in water but have to come up every 5 minutes for air.
- Mother hippos give birth to their babies in the water.
- Baby hippos weigh about 45 kg (100 lbs).
- Female hippos give birth to one calf every two years.
- Even though hippos don’t look fast, they can run up to 30 km/h (19 mph).
- Hippos consume nearly 70 kg (150 lbs) of grass in a 4 to 5 hour grazing period.
- Hippos are the most aggressive animals in the world and kill 500 humans a year.
- Predators of the hippo include hyenas, lions, and crocodiles. Unfortunately, humans have also become a primary predator. While some hunt hippos for their meat, others hunt them for ivory canine teeth. The demand for hippo teeth escalated after the ban on the international trade of elephant ivory in 1989. Despite recent efforts to ban the trade of hippo teeth, the animal is classified as vulnerable. Through the years, the most significant decline in the hippo population has occurred in the Democratic Republic of the Congo.

Sadly, I have decided to stop using Flickr. Today will be my last post. I make this decision reluctantly as I love my hobby and enjoy making my (almost) daily posts. It was a very hard choice for me but I am doing it mainly because of the new rules that will be put into place this January by Flickr.
I thank all of those who followed me through these past few years and appreciate the time everyone has given to viewing, liking or commenting on my work. We had a great little community and I even made a few friends along the way.

Hippopotamuses love water, which is why the Greeks named them the “river horse.” Hippos spend up to 16 hours a day submerged in rivers and lakes to keep their massive bodies cool under the hot African sun. Hippos are graceful in water, good swimmers, and can hold their breath underwater for up to five minutes. However, they are often large enough to simply walk or stand on the lake floor, or lie in the shallows. Their eyes and nostrils are located high on their heads, which allows them to see and breathe while mostly submerged.
Hippos also bask on the shoreline and secrete an oily red substance, which gave rise to the myth that they sweat blood. The liquid is actually a skin moistener and sunblock that may also provide protection against germs.

Between limping to work and to the doctors I have not been able to take many photos lately. Over six weeks ago I was diagnosed with a malignant melanoma on my lower leg and had to go back to hospital to have a significant larger piece of skin removed. They could not pull my skin to completely close the wound (16 stitches) so it's still an open gash in the middle but seems to be healing slowly.
I am really not a suntanning kind of person and always preferred the shade but got it anyway. Please check the UV-Index before you go out and take precautions and put sunblock on yourself and your children/grandchildren!
