Sun Bear, Helarctos malayanus
Sun bears are the smallest of all bear species. Their small size is an asset to their life in the trees of Southeast Asia. The sun bear gets its name from the light colored markings on its chest, thought to resemble the sun in the sky. Like other bears, the sun bear likes to eat both plants and meat. A favorite food is honey, and sun bears, with their long claws and extra long tongue, have no trouble getting into beehives. The bear will even eat the bees along with the honey.
I've been wanting to get a picture of the moon and the Lowell Sun sign together for ages. I see the Sun sign every day when I come home from work. They've even replaced all the lights so it's not S N or N. Nice.
I'm not satisfied with this version, so I'll try again some other time. There's too much motion blur -- I want it to be crisp. The difficulty is keeping the camera steady while holding it on a cylindrical rail. I tried a few higher ISO shots so I wouldn't have to stay steady for so long, but anything over 100 had too much noise from the long exposure.
I had another version where it was just the green sign and the moon, but I liked having the red sign in the background -- like a shadow of the green sign in front of it. Granted, the letters don't line up correctly, but that's how it is.
Another definition of insanity is perfectionism, and vice versa.

As the sun climbs higher and produces increasingly more heat the adult Osprey puffs up it's feathers to increase its sun protestion for the young...they can get quite puffed up! Cooling also takes place by the open mouth. There are actually three young in this nest but probably only one or two will survive to adulthood. I will post more as the chicks grow and when I have time. Best viewed large. All rights reserved.
