ONE MORE 2014 FAVORITE: SUMMIT SUNRISE

The New Year is just about here! Here's to a 2015 full of fun, creativity, and adventure.

PS: The photo is of my great friend, and fantastic photographer Matt Kloskowski atop Steens Mountain at dawn last fall. It was a cold, windy and beautiful morning up there.

Gros Morne Mountain has its summit obscured in a bit of fog. It's the second highest mountain in Newfoundland at 807 m (2,648 ft). It's also the namesake of Gross Morne National Park which encompasses 1,805 sq km (697 sq mi).

Looking South West from the summit of Island Peak. The prominent peak near the middle of the image is Ama Dablam.

I wrote a blog about my experience on the mountain here!

The Capitan. The Chief. A snow covered summit of El Capitan pokes out of the swirling mist on a late winter morning covered in fresh snow. The round summit descends down a very straight slope before it abruptly drops 3,200 feet to the valley floor in one of the most famous and formidable rock walls on Earth. Thereâs really something about winter where the interplay of the rock and the snow and the way it clings to certain surfaces and ignores others makes these familiar formations so much more stately or regal to me. I donât know why I feel that way, but in any case I love good interesting weather and this day had plenty of that as misty clouds swirled and danced around the peaks and granite walls.

Summit Lake (12,830 feet) is an excellent example of a high alpine lake. It lies in a cirque formed by Mount Evans and Mount Spalding with rocky ridges and cliffs rising from the lake to the summits over 1,000 feet above. It is the most accessible lake above timberline as the Summit Lake parking area is just a few hundred feet from the lake. The area to the east of the lake is Summit Lake Flats and is the only known area of permafrost located in the United States outside of Alaska.

another one for ‪#‎COP21‬ and global warming . at first it was just a doodling on a small square of canson paper and I've discovered I can improve this square in a cartoon pinguin...

canson paper and acrylic paint 10cm squares. final composition is about 35cm.

using a kite base and wetfold of course !

We only got a few peeks at the summit of Rainier on this trip but the light and shadow was spectacular anyway. This was one of the times the clouds parted.

The foundations of a former palace or monastery cover much of the summit plateau at Sigiriya Lion Rock. The views of central Sri Lanka are excellent.

I recently went on a little night snowshoe adventure with a fellow Flickrite Mike Berenson up to the top of Cupid Peak, by Loveland Pass CO. It was about as cold a place as I've ever been and before my camera froze (literally) I got this shot of Summit County and its main ski resorts. First on the left is Arapahoe Basin and next down you can see Keysone's night skiing lights. More to come

When your scanner dies and all you have to rely on is a 3 hour old facebook post things can go in weird directions. While driving north to intercept a SB manifest, i looked through the trees and saw horses and cars in the trees. A quick turn around and the chase was on. We got ahead just in time to get a shot at Summit which is one of the sidings still controlled by classic N&W CPLs along the NS H-Line. CPL signals first popped up along this line almost 100 years ago, some still remain from these installs further south, but its mostly bits and pieces. Though slowly but surely NS is chopping these old beasts down, seeing them still serve their function is very neat as few Position lights, colored or not, survive today.

The summit of Glyder Fach is a rocky plinth almost covered with massive rock slabs and boulders. Two chaps had scrambled up there and, if you check their attire, you can work out that it was pleasant enough for shirtsleeves at 3000 feet in mid-winter. No wind to mix the air or to chill the bones.
