The headlights of some climbers headed for the summit can be seen on this quiet night, within Mt. Rainier National Park.

At last I gain the rocky and rather barren summit plateau of Derry Cairngorm. My destination, Derry Cairngorm's summit cairn, is in the distance so I'll have to pick my way carefully across the rocks and boulders to finally reach it.

Derry Cairngorm is my first Munro I have bagged this season, my 24th in total, and stands at 1155 meters (3789 feet). This trip sees me covering approximately 20 miles by Bike & Hike and gaining 2682 feet in elevation, after setting off from the Linn of Dee outside Braemar.

An odd, isolated tree on a knoll representing the summit of the hill west of Grendon and south of Butterton, Staffordshire.

I drove past this tree a few times over the summer - but it's more photogenic without leaves, I would say.

Summit of Mt Rexford after the first ascent of the north couloir.

One of New York's newest architectural icons, One Vanderbilt is a 93-story supertall skyscraper at 42nd St and Vanderbilt Ave.

Upon opening in April 2021, it was the 4th tallest building in NYC.

The observation deck, SUMMIT, opened in late October 2021. The three floors of mirrored surfaces have made it a a must-visit for Instragramers and aspiring fashion models.

The building offers views of the Chrysler Building, rooftops across midtown, but the star is the Empire State Building to the south.

Looked back and saw a brief burst of sunlight illuminating the approach to the summit of the Worcestershire Beacon.

Another pristine bluebird day at Mt. Bachelor today, and it was a lot warmer than my frostbitten trek to the summit two weeks ago. It's not often you get to look down on the world from above the clouds without being in an airplane.

In the historic neighborhoods off Saint Paul's Summit Avenue, there are many traces of the architecture and buildings of the day. Here I found a garage where the corner was covered in ivy. Enjoy!

Situated along the Swiss-Italian border in the Pennine Alps, Zermatt, canton of Valais - a spectacular Swiss alpine sanctuary and mountaineer's dream destination. Digital film scan, Summer 1967.

Classic view in the backdrop, left to right: Matterhorn (4,478 m, 14,692 ft), Dent Blanche (4,358 m, 14,298 ft), Ober Gabehorn (4,063 m, 13,330 ft). The Breithorn climb is considered as of the easiest of the 4,000-meter climbs in the Swiss Alps and serves as a useful training climb for the more challenging Matterhorn ascent.

Postscript

Mountaineering and rock climbing seemed relatively pure and simple back in the day, largely devoid of digital smartphones and high-tech gear, permanent bolts, fixed ropes, traffic-jam lineups, and cable-car shortcuts to the legendary climbing routes.

Nowadays the high-altitude Gandegghütte, typically the starting point on the last leg of the Breithorn ascent, can be reached by a brief 30-minute hike from a relatively new gondola station on nearby Klein Matterhorn, cutting the original Breithorn ascent from the valley by a day.

Once a remote refuge for hikers and alpinists, the upgraded mountain hut now caters to mainstream tourism and sightseeing day trips. It boasts modern hotel accommodations with free Wi-Fi and three-course meals featuring "alpine culinary delights ... carefully selected drinks, relaxed tunes" and a spectacular panoramic view over the 4000-meter-high peaks of the Pennine Alps.

Not everyone is happy with this invasive brand of alpine modernism. Traditional purists in the mountaineering community are particularly troubled. Commercial appeals to the digitalized world of mass tourism, packaged alpine jaunts, and aerial-tram shortcuts appear to have compromised much of the old-world charm, mystery, and adventure in an otherwise pristine mountain refuge.

The boys on the summit of Green Mountain, their second of the three Flatiron peaks. Grueling hike (Gregory Canyon, Ranger Trails) due to 90+ degree temps. Lots of shade, fortunately.

Here the boys have scrambled up to a cemented-stone cairn, on top of which is a metal plate that points out the names of peaks on the Continental Divide that make up the western horizon.
