Successful troll sighting by Peter Stewart at Skane Troll Spotters: www.trollspotters.com

West Norwood Cemetery, London.

From Wikipedia:

In 1830 George Frederick Carden, editor of The Penny Magazine, successfully petitioned Parliament about the parlous state of London's over-full church burial yards. In response they passed a number of laws that effectively halted burials in London's churchyards, moving them 'to places where they would be less prejudicial to the health of the inhabitants'. In 1836 a specific Parliamentary statute enabled the South Metropolitan Cemetery Company to purchase land from the estate of the late Lord Thurlow in what was then called Lower Norwood and create the second of the 'Magnificent Seven' cemeteries. Architect William Tite was a director of the cemetery company and designed the landscaping, some monuments, and was eventually interred there himself.

The new cemetery was consecrated by the Bishop of Winchester on 7 December 1837, receiving its first burial soon after, and was the first cemetery in the UK to be designed in the new Gothic style. It offered a rural setting in open countryside, as it lay outside London at that time. Its design and location attracted the attention of wealthy - and not so wealthy - Victorians, who commissioned many fine mausoleums and memorials for their burial plots and vaults.

The cemetery was built on the site of the ancient Great North Wood, from which Norwood took its name. Although many trees had been cleared, a number of mature specimens were included in Tite's original landscaping. A tree survey of the cemetery in 2005 identified one oak which is thought to date from 1540-1640. Fourteen more oaks, a maple and an ash tree were identified that predate the foundation of the cemetery in 1836. In the first years of the cemetery's operation, these were joined by coniferous trees and evergreen holm oaks.[2]

The site originally included two Gothic chapels at the crest of the hill, but these were badly damaged by bombing during World War II. The Dissenter's chapel was rebuilt as a Crematorium while the Episcopal chapel was levelled, to be replaced by a memorial garden over its crypt. In 1842 a section of the cemetery was acquired by London's Greek community for a Greek Orthodox cemetery, and this soon filled with many fine monuments and large mausoleums. Grade II*-listed St Stephen's Chapel within the Greek section is attributed to architect John Oldrid Scott. Another section in the south-east corner was acquired by St Mary-at-Hill in the City of London for its own parish burials.

Between 1978 and 1993 the cemetery achieved several levels of official recognition by being included in the West Norwood Conservation Area, while the entrance arch, the fine railings and 64 monuments were listed as Grade II and II* - more listed monuments than any other cemetery.

However, space for new burials ran out in the inter-war years, and, deprived of this regular source of income, the cemetery company was unable to properly afford its upkeep. Lambeth Council compulsorily purchased the cemetery in 1965, and controversially claimed ownership over existing graves. Lambeth changed some of the character of the grounds through "lawn conversion", removing at least 10,000 monuments (including some of the listed monuments) and restarted new burials by re-using plots. Southwark Diocesan Consistory Court cases in 1991 and 1995 found this to be illegal and brought about the cessation of new burials, and forced the restoration of a handful of the damaged or removed monuments. In addition it required Lambeth to publish an index of cleared plots so that the current entitled owners can request restitution. As a consequence of the courts' findings Lambeth now operates the cemetery in accordance with a scheme of management under the joint control of all interested parties that includes Lambeth, the Diocese, the local Friends of West Norwood Cemetery and conservation bodies such as English Heritage.

This is a photograph is from a set of photographs of the Celbridge AC Ray Crofton Kia 5KM Road Race and Fun Run which was held at Celbridge AC running track, Clane Road, Celbridge, Co. Kildare, Ireland on Sunday 16th August 2015 at 10:30. The 5KM route today is a new revised route for 2015 making it different to the successful 5KM race held annually by the club in the past.

The race started on the Clane Road outside the Celbridge AC grounds and proceeded on a left-handed loop which took participants close to Celbridge mainstreet before taking a left turn westwards to return back to the Clane Road and the grounds of Saint Wolstan's Community School and North Kildare Educate Together. The final 600meters of the race were held on the beautifully manicured grass track of Celbridge AC. The race was held in beautiful summer weather with temperatures of around 16C making very favourable and pleasant conditions for participants. There was excellent marshalling and route layout with stewards on all junctions to ensure safe traffic management. Refreshments were served after the race where many participants enjoyed the morning sunshine and sat down on the grass around the track to talk and review the race. The race also marked a significant milestone for Celbridge AC who are celebrating 50 years as an athletic club. A family and community fun day was planned for after the race to make the 50th anniversary celebrations. Celbridge is a small town on the banks of the River Liffey and is only a short distance from the county border line with Dublin. The proximity to Dublin sees Celbridge boast a large population and the race today reflected this with a very large number of local athletes taking part from the 295 participants.

We have a large set of photographs from the event today. The full set is accessible at: www.flickr.com/photos/peterm7/albums/72157656917110560 - They were taken at the start and finish of the event.

Our only "cost" is that we request that if you are using these images: (1) on social media sites such as Facebook, Tumblr, Pinterest, Twitter,LinkedIn, Google+, VK.com, Vine, Meetup, Tagged, Ask.fm,etc or (2) other websites, blogs, web multimedia, commercial/promotional material that you must provide a link back to our Flickr page to attribute us or acknowledge us as the original photographers.

This also extends to the use of these images for Facebook profile pictures. In these cases please make a separate wall or blog post with a link to our Flickr page. If you do not know how this should be done for Facebook or other social media please email us and we will be happy to help suggest how to link to us.

I want to download these pictures to my computer or device?

You can download this photographic image here directly to your computer or device. This version is the low resolution web-quality image. How to download will vary slight from device to device and from browser to browser. Have a look for a down-arrow symbol or the link to 'View/Download' all sizes. When you click on either of these you will be presented with the option to download the image. Remember just doing a right-click and "save target as" will not work on Flickr.

I want get full resolution, print-quality, copies of these photographs?

If you just need these photographs for online usage then they can be used directly once you respect their Creative Commons license and provide a link back to our Flickr set if you use them. For offline usage and printing all of the photographs posted here on this Flickr set are available free, at no cost, at full image resolution.

Let's get a bit technical: We use Creative Commons Licensing for these photographs

We use the Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike License for all our photographs here in this photograph set. What does this mean in reality?

The explaination is very simple.

Attribution- anyone using our photographs gives us an appropriate credit for it. This ensures that people aren't taking our photographs and passing them off as their own. This usually just mean putting a link to our photographs somewhere on your website, blog, or Facebook where other people can see it.

ShareAlike – anyone can use these photographs, and make changes if they like, or incorporate them into a bigger project, but they must make those changes available back to the community under the same terms.

Above all what Creative Commons aims to do is to encourage creative sharing. See some examples of Creative Commons photographs on Flickr: www.flickr.com/creativecommons/

I ran in the race - but my photograph doesn't appear here in your Flickr set! What gives?

As mentioned above we take these photographs as a hobby and as a voluntary contribution to the running community in Ireland. Very often we have actually ran in the same race and then switched to photographer mode after we finished the race. Consequently, we feel that we have no obligations to capture a photograph of every participant in the race. However, we do try our very best to capture as many participants as possible. But this is sometimes not possible for a variety of reasons:

►You were hidden behind another participant as you passed our camera

►Weather or lighting conditions meant that we had some photographs with blurry content which we did not upload to our Flickr set

►There were too many people - some races attract thousands of participants and as amateur photographs we cannot hope to capture photographs of everyone

►We simply missed you - sorry about that - we did our best!

You can email us petermooney78 AT gmail DOT com to enquire if we have a photograph of you which didn't make the final Flickr selection for the race. But we cannot promise that there will be photograph there. As alternatives we advise you to contact the race organisers to enquire if there were (1) other photographs taking photographs at the race event or if (2) there were professional commercial sports photographers taking photographs which might have some photographs of you available for purchase. You might find some links for further information above.

Don't like your photograph here?

That's OK! We understand!

If, for any reason, you are not happy or comfortable with your picture appearing here in this photoset on Flickr then please email us at petermooney78 AT gmail DOT com and we will remove it as soon as possible. We give careful consideration to each photograph before uploading.

I want to tell people about these great photographs!

Great! Thank you! The best link to spread the word around is probably http://www.flickr.com/peterm7/sets

260 new cadets successfully finished Freshman Recruit Orientation Group (FROG) Week, held Aug. 13-18 at the University of North Georgia's Dahlonega Campus, increasing the strength of the university's Corps of Cadets to a record-setting 813 cadets. The intensive six-day training is held before classes begin for the fall and spring semesters to help new recruits, who are called FROGs, learn the customs and traditions of the school and military life. Instruction includes drill and ceremony, physical training, team-building exercises, and military rules and regulations. FROG Week culminates with the traditional Crown Mountain run, a 3.1-mile run to the highest point in Dahlonega.

The University of North Georgia is designated by the Department of Defense as one of six senior military colleges in the nation and has been designated as The Military College of Georgia by the Georgia General Assembly. The university has been providing military instruction since its creation in 1873, and FROG Week has been going on at the school for some 50 years.

Upon graduation, most members of UNG's Corps of Cadets commission as second lieutenants in the U.S. Army or Georgia National Guard. Alumni of UNG’s Corps of Cadets include nearly 50 general officers, including seven who are currently serving in the military.

This is a photograph from the 2nd round of the 2015 Mullingar Road League which was held in Belvedere House and Gardens, Mullingar, Co. Westmeath, Ireland on Wednesday 13th May 2015 at 20:00. The weather was much better this week for running with nice bright sunshine and little or no breeze. As it turned out this made the course considerably quicker with many runners recording faster times than the 1st round race. This year's 5KM is ran on a modified route based on the route from the last couple of years. The final 1KM is within the Belvedere Gardens bringing runners down to the lakeside for a second time and finishing along the aptly named Stream Of Life. The route modification means that the race offers a slightly faster route than the hill finish of previous years.

The race is promoted by Mullingar Harriers for the Pat Finnerty Memorial Cup. Competitors need to run 3 races out of the 4 races in May (any order) to be considered in the overall placing in categories at the conclusion of the league. Runners can also choose to just run one race without being considered for the overall league placings. Over 360 people took part in tonight's event. As with last week the new finish area provided a nice space for runners to stay around and chat in the evening sunshine. The Mullingar Road League 2015 is now half-way through and has continued successfully and looks to add to the success in the history of this great series. Despite the bright evenings the photographic conditions in Belevedere are difficult so this photograph is part of a smaller than usual photograph set as there were many blurred photographs this evening.

The "Road League" is something of a misnomer but is an indication of the League's origins on the roads around Ladestown Mullingar prior to it's move into Belvedere in 2008. The Road League is the envy of many other races in the country as the Belvedere locations offers a completely traffic free 5KM route.

Many people offer payment for our photographs. As stated above we do not charge for these photographs. We take these photographs as our contribution to the running community in Ireland. If you feel that the photograph(s) you request are good enough that you would consider paying for their purchase from other photographic providers or in other circumstances we would suggest that you can provide a donation to any of the great charities in Ireland who do work for Cancer Care or Cancer Research in Ireland.

A huge well done to our Anaesthesia department who raised £640 for Lifebox charity with a bake sale last month! This was organised by Dr Jas Arora, registrar and Tara Lawrence, anaesthetic secretary. Lifebox charity aims to preserve and protect the health of patients worldwide by providing and assisting in the provision of equipment and support services in low resource and lower-middle income countries at no or reduced cost. The money raised at our hospitals will make a life-changing difference to health workers striving to deliver safe treatment in environments where resources, support and training are scarce.
