A successful re-introduction project has been running for many years in Cadiz province Andalucia, Spain. Northern Bald Ibis are depicted in many of the Paleolithic cave paintings in Cadiz province and the birds in Spain are sedentary. The nearest natural breeding colony is on the Moroccan Atlantic coast near Tamri.

Released birds in Spain have colonised a cliff-face below the town of Vejer de La Frontera beside the Rio Barbate at La Barca de Vejer. This is the main colonial site although other pairs have successfully raised chicks at other sites including the breeding centre between Barbate and Zahara de Los Atunes.

This is a great success story and one that attracts a lot of birding enthusiasts from all over the world. Come and watch them in action between February to May at La Barca de Vejer.

The first two photos in the Album are old photos I took at Tamri, on Morocco's Atlantic coast. This is still and important natural breeding area and a lot of protection and conservation work there and at a few other sites is still in progress.

The Northern Bald Ibis (NBI) is one of the world’s most threatened birds, listed as Critically Endangered (CR) on the IUCN Red List. The historical range of Geronticus eremita probably extended throughout North Africa and into the Middle East. Since the beginning of the 20th century, however, the species has been known as two disjunct populations: a western population in Morocco currently estimated at 300 individuals, and an eastern migratory population between Syria and Ethiopia (less than 5 individuals) and in Turkey where only 180 semi-captive birds remain (BirdLife International, 2015).

Bad pun, but I couldn't resist. Drove through at least 50m of reasonably shallow water on the road, around km27 on the Basin Depot Road. Beaver had dammed the culvert, and heavy rains the night before put water over the top.

Successful first flight!

Successful:

-The typeface chosen contrast the roman typeface commonly used in American monuments, making it stand out.

-Although the carving is very shallow, it pairs well with the quiet feeling of reflecting on the tragic event represented by the monument.

-The letters are well formed and are spaced evenly.
