Ecovolis program has proven successful in dramatically increasing bicycle use in Tirana, which, formerly, was a city without a developed bicycle culture. Ecovolis program is the first project in Albania that provides low-income adults with commuter bicycles as well as a donating program for children bicycles. The program recently completed two major steps, opening new bike stations in the city of Durrës and integrating Tourist Information Point Service to the bicycles stations' structure.
History
The Tirana Community Bicycle Albania project won financial support from the George Soros Open Society Foundation Albania (OSFA). An even larger contribution came from the US-based Pedal for Progress organization, which donated 450 bicycles. Sixty of these were used road bikes, which were modified and painted by local technicians to serve as public bikes in the Ecovolis scheme. Another portion was set aside to donate to children and to activists and volunteers at PASS. Still another portion were diverted to the project's Eco Bicycle Shop, a social enterprise which sells bikes for USD 50-150 and reinvests profits for the service and maintenance of Ecovolis bicycles. The main objective of the program was to introduce the community to an inexpensive, environmental friendly form of transport -- the bicycle; to sell used bikes at low prices; to donate bikes to the children of needy families and to PASS volunteers; to establish a bike sharing-scheme in the city (Ecovolis); and to employ financially disadvantaged people and young students to operate the bike-sharing scheme.
System
Each Ecovolis station is staffed by two employees in two shifts and contains 30 -- 60 bicycles. In order to use the bicycles it is required to provide a personal identification document (such as passport or ID card) or by subscribing to the Ecovolis membership Card.
The first black and red bicycles, (also the colors of the Albanian flag) were donated from US-organization Pedal for Progress, (which collect and donate used bicycles). As these bicycles were of different types, converting them for safe and comfortable public use took months of work. The price per bicycle varies from 60 US$ to 90 US$ each. The bicycle is equipped with a front bicycle basket, a behind carrier, a comfortable saddle and a public fender with the Ecovolis sign.
The bicycle stations also provide touristic information to the visitors and a list of the city attractions. Moreover, being a non-profit social enterprise, during particular days the program offers free bicycle service, cycling courses, donations of bicycles and helmets for children in need, bike tours and a bicycle recycle program.
From September 15th to 19th the second of the four JCOM Masterclasses, educational programmes aimed at an international audience and held by international experts takes place. For the 20 selected participants this interactive course represents a unique opportunity to discuss the state-of-the-art of science exhibition development with particular focus on the possible different design approaches, helping participants to reflect on the relationship between the different media, contents and visitors' experience.
In order to run a successful business the women of Ganta knew they needed to be able to read and do basic mathematical calculations. At Tonglewin village UNESCO is paying a teacher to run women-only classes twice a week. After 6 months most of the women can now read and speak English.
The classes are held in the village schoolhouse when they return from the field and the children are finished their classes. Liberias electricity system was destroyed in the war, and the women work until the light disappears.
Charismatic leaders of different ages (60+, 50+, 40+) with proven C-level track records in variously sized international organizations will highlight their experiences with mentoring. Each will share their reasons for becoming a mentor, their experiences and challenges, and insights on the differences and tensions between their leadership and mentorship roles. Q & A will follow to integrate the audience into an engaged and interactive dialogue exploring the mentoring experiences of respective generations in different settings.

This is a photograph from the fifth running of the Athlone Flatline Half Marathon which was held at Athlone, Co. Westmeath, Ireland on Saturday 10th September 2016 at 11:00. There was beautiful weather for the event which started and finished at St. Aloysius College near the Canal Banks area of the town just slightly west of the River Shannon. This event was professionally organised and the very flat course meant that many runners both seasoned and new to the scene achieved season or personal bests. Over 900 participants successfully completed the event in the beautiful September sunshine. Everyone involved must be congratulated for the flawless running of the event. No stone was left unturned in the organisation of the race. The flat course brings runners into both Connaught and Leinster as the route takes runners on a flat rural country route for 8 miles before joining the old N6 Dublin Galway road. After a mile or so the race turns back onto country roads towards the finish.

If you do not know how this should be done for Facebook or other social media please email us and we will be happy to help suggest how to link to us.
I want to download these pictures to my computer or device?

Let's get a bit technical: We use Creative Commons Licensing for these photographs
We use the Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike License for all our photographs here in this photograph set. What does this mean in reality?
The explaination is very simple.
Attribution- anyone using our photographs gives us an appropriate credit for it. This ensures that people aren't taking our photographs and passing them off as their own. This usually just mean putting a link to our photographs somewhere on your website, blog, or Facebook where other people can see it.
ShareAlike – anyone can use these photographs, and make changes if they like, or incorporate them into a bigger project, but they must make those changes available back to the community under the same terms.
Above all what Creative Commons aims to do is to encourage creative sharing. See some examples of Creative Commons photographs on Flickr: www.flickr.com/creativecommons/
I ran in the race - but my photograph doesn't appear here in your Flickr set! What gives?
As mentioned above we take these photographs as a hobby and as a voluntary contribution to the running community in Ireland. Very often we have actually ran in the same race and then switched to photographer mode after we finished the race. Consequently, we feel that we have no obligations to capture a photograph of every participant in the race. However, we do try our very best to capture as many participants as possible. But this is sometimes not possible for a variety of reasons:
►You were hidden behind another participant as you passed our camera
►Weather or lighting conditions meant that we had some photographs with blurry content which we did not upload to our Flickr set
►There were too many people - some races attract thousands of participants and as amateur photographs we cannot hope to capture photographs of everyone
►We simply missed you - sorry about that - we did our best!
You can email us petermooney78 AT gmail DOT com to enquire if we have a photograph of you which didn't make the final Flickr selection for the race. But we cannot promise that there will be photograph there. As alternatives we advise you to contact the race organisers to enquire if there were (1) other photographs taking photographs at the race event or if (2) there were professional commercial sports photographers taking photographs which might have some photographs of you available for purchase. You might find some links for further information above.
Don't like your photograph here?
That's OK! We understand!
If, for any reason, you are not happy or comfortable with your picture appearing here in this photoset on Flickr then please email us at petermooney78 AT gmail DOT com and we will remove it as soon as possible. We give careful consideration to each photograph before uploading.
I want to tell people about these great photographs!
Great! Thank you! The best link to spread the word around is probably http://www.flickr.com/peterm7/sets

John B. Boddie, one of the most successful business men in Birmingham, is a native of Dayton, Marengo County, Alabama, where he was born in October, 1849. His father's ancestors were of French extraction. His mother, who was a granddaughter of General Winchester, of Revolutionary fame, and a sister of tlie gallant General E. W. Rucker, of the Confederate Army, is of Scotch-Irish descent. The parents were natives of Alabama and Tennessee respectively, and were married in the latter State in 1846, but immediately removed to Marengo County, Alabama. In 1859 his father's death occurred, during a typhoid-fever epidemic, leaving the mother with four children. John B. was the eldest of the number, and received a good education, first as a pupil of the celebrated Henry Tutwiler, and from
thence he went to the University of Mississippi. Before graduation he was called, when only seventeen years of age, from his studies to assume the management of an estate valued at over $350,000. The legislature relieved him from the disabilities of non-age to allow him to assume his responsible trust. These large interests he successfully controlled until the disastrous year of 1873, and from that period until 1883 continued the uneven struggle.
He purchased his first of piece property in Jefferson County, in 1883, at Wood's Station, which he sold within seventeen days at a profit of $1,000, his entire capital being less than one thousand dollars of borrowed money.
He intuitively recognized the magnificent natural beauty of the Southern Highlands for suburban homes, and purchased twenty acres, composing the most desirable locations, and began developing the property, which is now finely improved and dotted with some of the finest suburban residences in the State. He still owns considerable lands in that portion of the city, which is being improved rapidly.
His speculative operations in the business portion of the city have been marvelous, and the execution of them rapid and masterly. A few of them are cited to preserve for posterity some idea of what one man accomplished in the central business portion of Birmingham. His active mind saw at a glance that Morris Avenue would become, by reason of its freight facilities, the center of the wholesale trade, and he accordingly purchased from the Elyton Land Company 975 feet between the railroad and the avenue, paying $30 per front foot. In eight months he had sold all at a profit of over $125,000.
His next venture was on First Avenue, between 21st and 25th streets, purchasing 650 feet from the Elyton Land Company at $75 per front foot, and choice corner lots from diflerent individuals. He then conceived the idea of erecting a magnificent hotel to improve the property, to cost $220,000. After months of planning the desired location was secured by the purchase of the site of Dr. Caldwell's handsome private residence at a cost of $20,000, the hotel to bear the latter's name, and the Elyton Land Company to take $50,000 of the stock, and the balance divided between Mr. Boddie and seven other prominent capitalists. This bold stroke of policy cleared for our subject $80,000 on the sale of his lots, and secured the erection of the finest hotel in Alabama, in which he is a large stockholder.
Desiring a permanent investment, he decided upon the southwest corner of First Avenue and 20th street. After several months of negotiations, with an eye single to
becoming the sole possessor of this most eligible business lot, he became the owner of the entire lot, 100x100 feet, paying for it $77,500. This lot is now conceded to be worth $125,000. Mr. Boddie intends this lot to be a permanent investment, and will erect upon it a handsome business block, consisting of five stories, with elevators and all of the superior improvements of the age, to live as an enduring monument of his success for many years. These are but fair samples of his many successful operations. He also owns much valuable real estate, and is interested in various enterprises, among which we name: Sloss Steel & Iron Company, North Birmingham Land Company, North Highlands Company, Coalburg Coal & Coke Company, Central Land & Improvement Company, in most of which he is a director. Mr. Boddie has done more to advertise Birmingham and the advantages of Alabama as a safe investment for capital than any other one man. Recognizing the force of placing information abroad, and keeping it before the people, he has been liberal in the extreme sense of that word.
The "New South," one of the finest illustrated monthly magazines in the South, and one that is doing more to attract capital to the South than any other publication in the State, owes to Mr. Boddie the fact that it is on a substantial basis today, and without his timely assistance it would probably have suffered the fate of many other such periodicals.
Since coming to Birmingham he has paid off a large indebtedness contracted prior to coming here, has aided liberally all demands of charity and religious denominations, and has accumulated in a few years a fortune, which is fast increasing, and that in many examples would require a lifetime to secure.
Socially he is most pleasing, and ever ready to extend to the visitor any information and all of the courtesies native to a Southern gentleman. He resides in a finely appointed home, one of the finest and first built on the Highlands, which he is continually beautifying by all the appliances of decoration, furniture and art.
Mr. Boddie was married in 1879 to Miss Annie Perryman, of Mobile. She died in 1883, leaving one child, John B., Jr. January 21st, 1885, he was united to a second wife, Miss Jennie Cleves, of Memphis, Tenn. One child has been born to them, Mary.
They are both members of the M. E. Church, South.

And it was a very successful expedition:-)
these are my first nearly successful results with my home brewn b/w reversal process. the gelatine in the emulsion needs to be hardened, which i did not do in these examples due to the lack of the needed chemicals.
btw: does anyone have an idea how to harden the emulsion with household materials?

The dipper, aka, water ouzel, is a small aquatic songbird that makes year-round living diving into fast-running water to retrieve tiny invertebrates for food. Its story is remarkable in so many ways: that there are nutritious organisms available to it in freezing water; that it can plunge into freezing water and reliably come up with food; that it sings - beautifully - all year long; that although ice forms on its feet and legs, it seems impervious to very very cold conditions. The dipper is endlessly fascinating, and entertaining to watch.
"[H]is music is that of the streams refined and spiritualized. The deep booming notes of the falls are in it, the trills of the rapids, the gurgling of margin eddies, the low whispering of level reaches, and the sweet tinkle of separate drops oozing from the ends of mosses and falling into tranquil ponds." —John Muir, 1894

Blue-gray Gnatcatcher Polioptila caerulea
ebird.org/view/checklist/S58051895
Visiting Fort Simcoe Historical State Park on July 8th I discovered and documented what seems to be the first successfully breeding Blue-gray Gnatcatchers (BGGN) in Yakima County, Washington. Yesterday a friend, respected bird biologist Jeff Kozma, and another friend, Jennie Hodge, forwarded info about a reported (single) BGGN. Blue-gray Gnatcatchers are rare here. I met with my friend John Hebert, and he drove us out to the park. We figured out where the location probably was. (Reported distances references were all off substantially.) After a while we got to hear one clear vocalization about 80 yards from the described spot. I returned the following morning (7/8/2019) hoping to get views of the bird, hear it more, and just get to watch it forage. I found fresh Black Bear scat and footprints in my tennis shoe prints from the previous afternoon. I walked past the spot John & I heard one, hearing some possible BGGN vocalizations. I continued to close to the Blockhouse and wandered around listening to and watching lots of birds, following up on interesting bird activity, while trending back east toward the BGGN spot as I walked through the oaks. Suddenly I heard a Blue-gray Gnatcatcher right above me. I hung out there for quite a while, trying hard to get decent photos of this very active bird. I heard another bird that sounded quite like the BGGN, but with a slightly different quality. I made a mental note to add to my field notes that the other bird could very easily be mistaken (by careless listers) as being a BGGN, but it clearly wasn't the BGGN, since I was watching as it called. It took a while, but I came to realize that I was watching and hearing two adult Blue-gray Gnatcatchers calling and foraging, feeding two or three juveniles. I got passable identification photos of two juveniles and of one or two adults. They're the Western subspecies. Thank you to Ryan Merrill and Brad Waggoner for rapidly helping me by freely sharing their knowledge and perspective.
It sure was fun to discover that there was a family of Blue-gray Gnatcatchers -- a county-first of sorts for me. It was a side-effect of simply hanging out and watching the bird, then birds, for hours -- actual bird watching beyond competitive listing tic & run.
During my visits, neither John nor I used playback, pished, imitated owls, nor otherwise harassed these rare visitors. We respect and abide by the ABA Code of Birding Ethics, which prohibits such practices. No one is grandfathered in to allow such unethical practices.
The person who recently reported the (single) gnatcatcher on BragYak is one of several local competitive listers who argue against giving due credit to those who find rare birds. Sticking to that argument, we can't know if he is who found it, or if he was following up on someone else's find. They're shooting themselves in their own egos.
Expect much nicer photos from my friend Jim Cummins. He's an excellent bird photographer, both technically and ethically.
I'm really glad that most listers and bird watchers are honest, truthful, law abiding, and decent people.
Please always consider the sensitivity of birds, nearby humans, and the environment.
My original photos have embedded GPS time/date/location -- proving when & where I took the photos. I would never falsify a checklist, nor info under my photos, and never have done so. I would never cheat on my Big Day, never trick someone into helping me cheat on my Big Day, never illegally call in a Spotted Owl on my Big Day (or any other day), never trespass. Those practices would be the antithesis of my bird watching, and are clear violations of the ABA Code of Birding Ethics. I was used by Yakima County Big Day listers on May 11, 2013, and don't want others' enjoyment of birding to be harmed in the same way. If you find that you're wrong, whether in a bird identification or in your birding ethics, correct it. Apologize. Be honest about your apology. To those of good will: Be careful. Be ethical. Be truthful. Beware of being mis-lead.

This is a photograph from the Clane and Rathcoffey Parishes annual 10KM and 5KM Road Races and Fun Runs which were held in Clane village, Co. Kildare, Ireland on Sunday 19th of October at 14:30. This year's event follows on from the very successful staging last year (see link to photographs below). The organisers offer both a 5km and 10km race and the event provides an opportunity for runners, joggers, and walkers of all abilities to take part in the event. The 5KM has a particular emphasis on family entrants. There was a wonderful atmosphere around the Village as both races started and finished on the main street outside the parish hall. The directly out-and-back routes provided an opportunity for a fast time on a good course and made for a great finish line atmosphere as runners, joggers, and walkers crossed the line. Great praise must be extended to the whole organising committee who organised a very efficiently run event. The events provide some runners with an opportunity to have a final race effort session in the week leading up to the Dublin City Marathon.
Event Management and Electronic Timing was provided by Irish company Precision Timing. Their website is here with links to results from the race www.precisiontiming.net/result/racetimer
This photograph is part of a larger set of photographs taken at today's event. Photographs were taken at the start, 400 meters gone, 400 meters to go, 1km gone, and at the 9KM/4KM mark. The URL of the full set of photographs is www.flickr.com/photos/peterm7/sets/72157636717081724/

Overall Race Summary and Logistics
Participants: There were about 200 competitors combined in the two events.
Weather: The weather was very changeable for all of the events. During the 10KM race there was a heavy rain shower around the area of the 6KM mark but this didn't actually fall in the town. There was a strong headwind against competitors in the 10KM on the return part of the course between 6KM and 8KM.
Race Course:
This summary includes information on both the 5KM and 10KM races.
Both races start in the same place - just outside the Race HQ on the main street of the town. The races then proceed north eastwards out the Dublin Road towards Straffan and Celbridge. Just after 400 meters the races take a left up a small local road and proceeds along this road until it takes a tight left hand turn at the end of the lane at Capdoo goo.gl/maps/aPo26 (Google Streetview). The route proceeds until it shortly meets the Clane-Kilcock Road - College Road R407 goo.gl/maps/SGcPa. Both races will divert into Clane Business and Industrial Park goo.gl/maps/EQMf0 . The 5KM turns around and returns on the same route to the finish. However the 10KM race continues (taking a left) back onto College Road. Soon afterwards it passes the famous entrance to Clongowes Wood College on the right the race takes the next left (goo.gl/maps/zUhrJ) and brings runners onto the road known locally as the 'Long Road' (R408 Between Rathcoffey and Prosperous) at this point goo.gl/maps/fHKr2. The race proceeds northward until runners meet the Clane Kilcock Road once again. With the exception of the partial run into the Industrial Estate the race returns to the finish on the main street in Clane via the same route as the outward part of the route.
Location Map:
Clane Parish Hall (Race HQ) goo.gl/maps/MgakJ
Start and Finish Location of both races goo.gl/maps/0wiZp
Refreshments:
There was a really wonderful array of refreshments provided in the parish hall after the race for all participants.

We take these photographs as a hobby and as a contribution to the running community in Ireland. Our only "cost" is our request that if you are using these images without the watermark: (1) on social media sites such as Facebook, Tumblr, Pinterest, Twitter,LinkedIn, Google+, etc or (2) other websites, blogs, web multimedia, commercial/promotional material that you must provide a link back to our Flickr page to attribute us.
This also extends the use of these images for Facebook profile pictures. In these cases please make a separate wall or blog post with a link to our Flickr page.
Great! Thank you! The best link to spread the word around is probably www.flickr.com/peterm7/sets
