It's been nearly three weeks since we had real sunshine. So, even at -3F/-20C outside, I grabbed the nearest camera and headed down to the lake to search for an image. A nasty windchill limited me to a short, frantic shooting session, but any opportunity to search for a composition without dark, cloudy skies is a pure pleasure no matter how fleeting.

The icy signature of record-breaking freezing temperatures last night. For this largely tropical region, it is a Big Deal.

With subzero temperatures for weeks on end during February, I was determined to get out for a Utata Thursday Walk project. Just before sundown.

I finally got out of my apartment and walked around a nearby nature preserve.

It was just barely 0ºF all day, which was relatively warm in comparison to the weather during preceding weeks. With only a tiny breeze, 20 minutes was still just about as much as my body would take. I should have worn my long-johns... and boots.

Subzero temperatures have created a lovely winter sight at RSPB Greylake. The early morning sun provides the warm yellow glow.

The shores of Lake Mendota have frozen and thawed repeatedly in the last few weeks, make the ice unstable but a pretty site for pictures.
