-19°C sunrise by lake Roxen, Sweden

It was about -10F out there this a.m. and I had to change out the battery in my camera a couple of times, as it would freeze. That fog is evaporation from the Colorado River. It was a fantastic morning with fresh powder and a full moon. This was the last photo I took before going inside and reviving my frostbitten hands in warm water.

I was traveling from Zalau to Buciumi in North West Romania and we had to go through this amazing mountain. Luckily, I had my workaround lens(cannon 24-105 f4) and can't offered to miss taking a great shot here.

It was slightly foggy and freezing, I had no tripod and had to think very quickly for the best compositing.

As an amateur/enthusiast with a one in a life time opportunity, it was important that I get the composition and exposure right.

I changed my metering mode from spot to evaluative and increase exposure compensation to 2/3 of a stop.

I did little post work in light room. I know it's not a perfect shot but I hope to improve.

Please feel free to share opinions.

Thank you!!

There's that pier again, sadly no birds this time. :)

For this moment in time the world is at peace. Nothing else exist except for the beauty of nature that stands before me. For those few minutes before the sun rises above the mountains the world is perfect.

Thirty degrees below zero - and absolutely beautiful. Ranch House Lodge will welcome campers when spring arrives - until then moose will inhabit the land.

Of all the pictures (lots) I took at the subZERO Festival in San José that night, this one is one of my favorites. She just looks like she would be sassy.

Our resident, birdseed eating moose is back. After a few weeks of being gone - she strode down our driveway as if she owned the place, plunked down under the birdfeeder, and began scoffing up all of the seed that was tossed out by the woodpeckers. With subzero temperatures, and heavy snow predicted - I expect she will be hanging around for a while. Now Doc and I will have to keep our eyes open when we leave the cabin.

I am a little perplexed though . . . when I originally took photos of this moose and her love of birdseed - there were no buds on her head. Now I can plainly see two prominent bumps where antlers start to form. In the moose family only males sprout antlers, so . . . the question is - bull or cow? Or could this be two different moose with the same affinity to birdseed? Maybe time will tell - or I'll get a peek at the underparts.

After decades of observing wildlife - I don't chalk an animal's behavior up to "instinct," as much as I do to "memory", and yes - a superior intelligence. I know I can't roam through the vast forests of our state for weeks, and then with no navigational aid, find my way right back to one particular spot on the map. But this moose did just that.

Subzero temperatures greet us each morning now, and the trees are heavy with hoar frost. Pastel colors sweep across the sky and reflect from the snow. When Doc Doolittle went out to feed the birds this morning - I spotted this gray jay as he made his way to the feeders. Doc and I had just enjoyed a pancake and sausage breakfast and the left overs were on the menu for the jays. They all fight to be first, because they want the meat - the slower ones end up with pancakes. As the old saying goes; "the early bird catches the worm" - or in this case, "the sausage".

HFF my friends, have a nice Friday!

Coldness brings its own unique beauty

This is one of the results from the snowshoe-hike earlier this week of which I uploaded some video footage on my facebook and instagram. With a temperature of -15 C it means you're pretty much hiking inside a freezer :-) Good to warm up first while looking for compositions. The low temperatures make the snow sound so nice, I think it's one of my favourite sounds! And it's the only sound you'll hear while the sun rises above the white world.
