Not a lot of snow and drifting but super cold. My photo posted to Weather Underground at the time (10 years ago today!) says -2, so a wind chill around -30. Backyard blizzards.

Subzero steam over Lake Michigan.

The Sky gets dark,
I eat my tea,
I race to my mark,
Winter fishing is for me
I pull in fish after fish,
And I smile with glee,
Because this is my biggest wish,
Winter fishing is for me.
A flight of stairs takes the visitor of the hypocenter park in Nagasaki down to the original ground level at the time of the explosion. The dirt and rumble left behind by the blast raised the ground level by several meters. The remains of destroyed houses, and several materials that boiled at the intense heat of the blast can be seen here behind a protective glass panel.
Subfreezing here, subzero there. All subs. It looks like this cloud won't help much. They are promising relief for the coming week. Even I sent out a substitute and stayed inside. The sky has been soup lately but when I saw anything of the sky at all I bailed to record it. This kind of weather BETTER stay in February.
I was in town when I noticed the skies coming in and sped over to Golden Ponds for some open area to see what would shape up with the weather over the creek with the next storm hit. I still like scenes over the water even when the surface is ice. I have more winter shots here that remain unedited. As you know, changing seasons always drop a new cloak over your favorite venues. The first pond dropped to the level of the remains of the spillway and bridge that were victims of the flood. The ponds have frozen closed and we have been in the deep freeze. We caught a break yesterday when it warmed up to the normal February cold. The snow covers all including the islands that emerged as the pond drained. All, including the fishing dock are blanked and the geese went looking for scarce open water. Snow and ice define the day. Cold, shiver, brrrr!
On the other hand if you desire a skiing vacation, you're in great luck. Forty -three inches this weekend at Monarch. Our Rockies are loaded but beware most areas are on federal forest land and there, federal not Colorado's, drug laws apply to marijuana smoking. Focus on MJ and not hemp is beyond stupid!
This is another shot that captures and controls a outrageous range of light, just what I like. Lately, they reopened Golden Ponds, the Longmont, Boulder County greenbelt and rec area and I was searching for the shots to come around and define new scenes. I need some more exercise soon. I have posted a lot of this area throughout the seasons. Today, I wanted to look for new possible locations because March will be marching in and waiting out February is hell. I wandered and dragged myself around the green/white space and took some detail shots that were available.

Spent the day looking for one of these Long Eared Owls. Was about to give up (feet were getting cold) when there they were. Very exciting!

Yesterday, the temperatures were in the 50’s. This morning, it’s below zero with the windchill. I had to add fleece pants to my ensemble for the bus ride in. I am not looking forward to freezing my patootie off during my lunchtime run (5 miles today!)

Flying in the freezing cold with a wind chill of -17. The steam from Ecolab and the Xcel Energy Power Plant were extra prominent this day. Shot in Saint Paul, Minnesota.

It's been nearly three weeks since we had real sunshine. So, even at -3F/-20C outside, I grabbed the nearest camera and headed down to the lake to search for an image. A nasty windchill limited me to a short, frantic shooting session, but any opportunity to search for a composition without dark, cloudy skies is a pure pleasure no matter how fleeting.
The icy signature of record-breaking freezing temperatures last night. For this largely tropical region, it is a Big Deal.
