It was a frosty subzero morning. I couldn't feel my toes as I trudged through the snow. The whole world glistened with the allure of millions of diamonds. On every tree, every blade of grass, and the surface of the snow.
The Animas River begins it's journey at the tops of the beautiful San Juan Mountains in Southwest Colorado. Unfortunately, it became breaking news recently when the EPA accidentally released millions of gallons of toxic mine waste out of the GoldKing Mine near the town of Silverton, CO. Videos and pictures circulated the news and web for many months showing the orange stained water flowing through several states, eventually entering Lake Powell hundreds of miles downstream.
This is a river that I play in or at least have the great fortune to witness most everyday with it being several hundred yards from my doorstep. Today, the news crews are gone but the ugly orange sediment still lingers at the bottom and edges of Animas especially where the river flows slowly. The experts are hoping that the spring run-off will wash away and further dilute this sediment. Nature does have a wonderful way of cleansing itself and hopefully this process will happen sooner rather than later.
I have tried to ease the pain via photography by trying to bring out the true colors of this beautiful riparian ecosystem. My hope is that the natural colors I have captured will help overpower the orange-stained banks. If nothing else, it makes me feel a lot better about this special river and begins the healing process...
This picture was taken on a subzero morning hike along it's banks. It was refreshingly beautiful with the steam coming off the nearly frozen river channel with a heavy frost clinging to anything within it's grasp.

IC 1019 brings M336 south through Sutton on the old EJE. Once in a blue moon, an IC SD70 will slip out of the Kirk pool and manage to lead a road freight somewhere around the CN system.
The wind made waiting for 336 quite the experience but it made for a nice shot.
Made almost exactly a year ago, this one was never processed until now.
A few hours after this was shot, after night had fallen, we were still shooting inside this abandoned house literally in the middle of nowhere. Then... the owner showed up on his snowmobile and asked us to leave, not very nicely. He was not impressed, but we were not trespassing, breaking stuff or anything... Just trying to make his neglected house look beautiful again through our photography.
I bought a used 70-200 F2.8L & was out trying it out when I saw this horse. I shot it wide open at 2.8 @ 200mm to see the results on my cropped sensor 70D. The lens passed the test, looks brand new and operates well and saved me a lot of cash. The horse was backlit so I had to turn the shadows all the way up in LR
While I was taking many shots, I noticed every now and then the horse would expel a large volume of air causing a mist due to the low temps. I wanted to catch this along with an attractive body position.
I was talking to him, making odd sounds and trying to keep his attention.
This photo was the one I liked the best. It was about 8 below zero F, when I took this. Did you know, horses and cattle can withstand almost any temperature so long as they have food, water and a little selter from the wind.
Thanks in advance for any comments or favs.

-4º Celsius or 25º Fahrenheit … brrr! Not exactly tropical, who says I don’t suffer for my art?
Here’s a collage of Jack Frost’s overnight work, now where’s the brandy?

Ludington harbor is nearly frozen. Yesterday's 50mph winds covered the lighthouse with ice. The haze is vapor from the last unfrozen water in the harbor

Back roads get snow drifts taller then my car off Woodland Drive, I didn't hang out after dark because I knew it would be an interesting ride home.

Woke up to subzero degC and snow this morning. The winter seem to get longer each year lately in Norway. As if a new ice age was coming instead of spring. No global warming in Oslo Norway so far. Last summer was cold and short.
These leading lines created by freezing conditions and snowdrift just under the surface of a frozen lakeshore provide the perfect foreground to an explosive display of aurora in the sky. With wind chill, the temperature was near -15F at night.
Next time I'll be wearing proper snow attire when wrestling with this kind of project. It was a stupid last minute decision after getting off work and I thought, "I'll just cruise out there, snap a quick one, and be done". After all, the moon schedule was just what I'd been needing to make the mountains pop in the background. Dumb. A quick snap turned into damn near an hour of running back and forth through waist deep drifts, cursing at the moon for being late, one dead battery, and eventually rock hard jeans legs and tennies full of frozen toes. Was it worth it?.....It's always worth it.
Yesterday, I decided to try and shoot in La Hague, at sunset.
Unfortunately, the sky got suddenly very grey, and it began to rain... I decided to try to go anyway. After 15 minutes, the sky became clear again, and I finally arrived where I wanted: La baie d'Ecalgrain, a wonderful place.
The wind was so cold that after 30 minutes, I had to go back home: my fingers were so numb that I couldn't change the settings on my camera.
I wish you all a wonderful evening, I hope you get all the presents you asked for, I hope Santa can manage !! ;o)
This creek is mostly frozen. Air temps have often been well below zero lately. Apparently not cold enough to send this duck (or his flock) south for the winter.

Genesis 1:16 speaks of the moon as the "...lesser light to rule the night." There was something primordial about the night sky last night, with a massive halo around the moon and some aurora mists. It was also incredibly cold (about -30 C), and the so I've tinted the image a polar blue to match. I wanted to test the new Sigma 16mm f/1.4 for astro, and while the bright moon somewhat dominated the sky (ruling the night!), I really liked the end result of the image. With the morning frost yet to thaw off the ground Freightliner Class 66 locomotive 66563 approaches Mill Lane, Ryecroft with the 09.19 Hope (Earles Sidings) to Walsall freight terminal service.
Subzero temps on the other side of that glass! It's warm and cozy inside the municipal greenhouse in Anchorage, Alaska. Cactus and icicles don't usually coexist!
