“Be extremely subtle, even to the point of formlessness. Be extremely mysterious, even to the point of soundlessness. Thereby you can be the director of the opponent's fate.”

I saw some lovely sand patterns as we waited for the ferry at the harbour on Eigg, and there was just time to set up. 'Quite subtle' was Richard's comment, so I thought I would see whether 'quite subtle' was actually 'too subtle'. I'm not sure why I have a halo round the little piece of seaweed. Something to do with my scanning, I suspect....

We're used to the scarlet or vivid orange berries of the Rowan. These ones are a pale white with a subtle hint of pink. Again at Dawyck

Was working for an album cover and a profile shot.

Managed to pull this side of the model... Subtlely sweet

I saw a bunch of white roses and initially ignored them. However, when I looked a little bit closer I started to see these wonderful shades that I love so much …

A second chance is always worth it …

Lancia Thema 8.32 (1989), a true wolf in sheep's clothing. IMO beautifully understated. Featuring subtle badging, but also a 32 valve Ferrari V8 engine.

Shutter fired every 20 seconds

I took this one in the middle of the night during heavy fog - the only source of light was a street lamp about 60 feet away. I think the exposure time was about 20 seconds. It took a few tries messing around with the time lapse, but I finally got the look I wanted, so that only the areas that were directly reflecting light were visible, providing a cool effect. For those that can't figure out what this is, I was standing next to the passenger door of the Miata, shooting forward and down slightly towards the hood of the car. The hood has a small oval shaped bulge near the back, the headlight lids are visible, and the passenger side A-pillar (windshield frame) is visible.

IES Rome, Spring 2017

Venice, Italy

This is a photo I took in Venice during the world famous Carnevale. Most people donned masks around the city, some even purposefully dressing extravagantly so their photo would be taken. This photo represents a distinct Italian cultural event that began in 1162 with the defeat of Patriarch of Aquileia by the Venice Republic. The people gathered in San Marco Square to dance and celebrate their victory with elaborate costumes and masks, and this has been continued tradition ever since. Nonetheless, what I found most engaging about this photo is the woman on the left seemingly whispering to the woman on the right. This photo creates a sense of mystery as we wonder not only their identities, but what they're whispering about as well. Stylistically, their presence also creates repetition with the rest of the photo. There are the two women, and the pattern is then continued by the presence of the gondolas and the wooden poles. The vertical wooden poles also coincide with the church in background. The verticality of the poles is then continued by the church bell tower. I found this very intriguing and engaging. The church in the background on the left with the two women on the right creates tension, drawing the eye away from the center. Furthermore, the weather also created a very interesting effect in the photo. The fog gives the photo a mysterious feeling, adding to the mystery of what the two women are discussing. These are all components that create intrigue on the part of the viewer and display a Italian celebration that has continued for nearly 900 years.

OK, I am to photography as Clint Eastwood is to film-making. We're both a couple of students of the obvious, purveyors of the "slap the audience with a plank" school of message conveyance. Except he gets paid to do it.

Part of our(Prasanna and me) experiments with Smoke photography.

Used Prasanna's SB-600 as the light source and an Agarbatti as the smoke source...

I figured y'all must be tired of McKee Gardens, so this is from my verrry early archives - Happy Pretty Pink Tuesday to all!!

This is a columbine bud. To me, it's delicate shading is almost prettier than the flower and its highly unusual shape adds to its singular beauty. This was shot with my Canon G5 and was one of my first attempts at macro and digital. Sometimes, you just get lucky!!
