My latest acquisition! I subscribe to the Atlas Obscura newsletter and one day read about this innovative tape measure from Le Corbusier, the master of modern architecture. I had never heard of this Modulor Rule before and found the article to be a very interesting read. And when it mentioned that Princeton Architectural Press and Fondation Le Corbusier had created a facsimile edition of the Modulor Rule I awaited it’s release in September this year and got my very own copy. Which of course fitted perfectly in the Corner of Curiosities. You can read the article here: www.atlasobscura.com/articles/le-corbusiers-modulor-rule
About my Corner of Curiosities: A few years ago I bought a little box with drawers, thinking I would collect a few special bits and pieces in there. I parked this little set on top of my IKEA chest of six drawers which stands in a corner of my apartment. In time, I added more small shelfs, drawers and boxes and began to put curious items on display in all the little nooks and crannies. Quirky little things I mostly find on flea markets, but also get off the net. This corner of my home serves as inpiration, and every once in I while I walk up the IKEA dresser, put my elbows on top and rest my chin in my hands while I let my eyes wander through all these curious things. Moments such as these give spark my imagination and spurs my motivation to doodle in my journals. The collection is’nt all that special, as it’s not very easy finding fairly cheap, quirky and curious things, small enough to fit in the corner. My collection is constantly changing, if I find a new collectible, something else has to go or be moved around - as the corner now more or less is full.
Anywho, I thought I’d dedicate a photo album to this Corner of Curiosities, here on Flickr - probably for no other purpose than to tickle my own imagination :)

I picked up my 3rd 5D2 after flip flopping between full frame and 1.6 crop. I decided I needed both.
It went like this 40D to 5D2 ( thought all my lenses were too zoomed back), back to a 40D (then went OMG 5D2 quality is 10 times better), back to 5D2(was happy until the 7D came out),to the 7D. Then for the last year I said I need both and finally picked up the 5D2 on the B&H sale. I'll have my 7D for sports and macro and the 5D2 for full framey shots. I got some stuff lined up so it should be paid off in no time.

Sun was finally peaking out... clouds were clearing. Giving us this just Jaw Dropping Nebraska Thunderset... (Thunderstorm @ Sunset)
This supercell storm was cresting to the northeast & the ambient sunset light was giving us that Nebraska Magic. Just the perfect conditions to end this day. The final shots of light & storm were dynamically beautiful.

When it comes to weather I subscribe to the maxim "there is no such thing as bad weather, just bad clothing". It is totally true, at least in my experience. The difference a good jacket or pair of boots or even a second pair of socks can make can be night & day in its contrast. I think when we say, "the weather was awful" was really mean is that our choice of clothing was awful, or our preparation was awful. I was reminded of this today out in the Gorge in incredibly chilly weather. Some of the attire of my fellow Gorge-goers had me scratching my head a bit. Tennis shoes in knee-deep snowdrifts are not going to be comfortable for long. So here are some of my tips.
1) Most important rule: layers. Wear layers. You are going to be cold, then you will be hiking and you will be hot. Then you will stop and be cold again. Having layers does a couple of things. First, it allows you to adjust as your body temperature changes, or as the conditions change. Second, the air gap between layers is itself a form of insulation and will keep you warmer.
2) Focus on your torso and your head. You lose most of your heat from these parts of your body. A warm jacket will do you more good than warm pants. Of course, both are great, but your torso and head are your priority. Get good outdoor clothes for these parts of your body first. Next are your hands. Numb hands are really uncomfortable and good gloves are an excellent investment. Next is your feet. Then your legs. I often hike in cold weather with just a single layer on my legs. Yeah, they get cold but with all the other parts of my body taken care of, cold legs don't bother me much. One sorta exception are the feet. Cold feet also suck, almost as much as cold hands. Don't underestimate how quickly your feet will get cold either, even with good boots. The cold from the ground will leech right through them, numbing your feet even if they are nice and dry. A good pair of thick socks, or even just a second pair of socks makes a sneaky amazing difference.
3) Waterproof stuff is pure magic. Less applicable to freezing cold and more so with rainy days, but always useful. At the minimum have a waterproof shell for your torso and waterproof boots. Waterproof hiking pants are nice too, but not as necessary. Still, it is fun to be able to sit down on a wet log or wet ground without worrying about a wet butt.
4) Accessorize. There are some really handy extras to think about that can go a long way toward making the weather a moot point in regard to your comfort. A face wrap for example. The nose is very exposed so something that covers it helps a ton. A hat with a brim. Simple but highly effective. Keeps the sun and the rain out of your eyes. Boot traction! I love boot traction. Think YakTrax, but really there are a ton of options out there. I used mine today. Made walking on slippery snow so much less tedious and much more secure. Then there are gaiters. A surprising number of people I talk too have never heard of these. I got my first pair with my first pair of snowshoes, but I use my gaiters far more often than my snowshoes. Essentially they are a piece of fabric, generally waterproof, that wraps around the calf and the top of your boots. They keep snow from getting into your boots, which really really can suck and leads to wet feet in no time, no matter how waterproof your boots. Gaiters are ... well, maybe not life-savers but certainly day-savers. Anytime I am heading out in the snow I have my gaiters and my traction. A coat with two layers, including a waterproof outer shell. Waterproof boots. Wool hiking socks. A thick cap. A scarf just because I like to keep my neck wrapped up when I have my hood down so snow doesn't fall down the back of my collar. And fold-back mittens. I find my fingers stay warmer in mittens than gloves, and the fold-back action allows me to use my fingers for things like threading cable releases into cameras or loading film. And that is pretty much how I roll.
There are of course many other things to carry that relate more to safety. I kept this list mostly just on the comfort side of things. It was just on my mind as I watched folks slide up and down trails today in questionable attire. They were enjoying themselves, so to each their own, but they also weren't staying out terribly long either and a couple of changes to jacket or footwear choice may have helped with that.
Anyhoo, just cold day thoughts. I love the cold weather but I don't think there is anything superhuman about my ability to be out in it, I just prepare for it pretty well.

We all start somewhere.
You've seen me recently asking you to subscribe to my monthly emails. My "Do Over" to change up what and how I've been helping other photographers.
On one of these posts someone asked me this:
"I am not a photographer (yet) but I can still subscribe?"
None of us started out as artists, photographers, painters, sculptors, etc. It is a constant learning and growing process. From picking up that first crayon to clicking the shutter on a high-level pro camera.
Whatever your creative outlet is. Whether it's a hobby or your profession. It's a non-stop learning process.
Why subscribe if you're not a photographer, yet?
This is what you'll get from me:
- Free tips on staying motivated, creating images and more
- Photography challenges
- Questions answered
- Short videos that will guide you and let you peek inside my thought process (scary, I know)
- Inspiration in many forms
- Early access to new content
- First dibs on photo tours and discounts
Most of these items will help you learn and grow from where you are. Beginner, hobbyist or more advanced. It's what I do, who I am. I want to help you on your creative journey.
While I'm not going to be the person to teach you how to use your camera and gear, I will push you to learn the basics of composition (or refresh those ideas in your mind). There will be more artsy type information shared, such as learning about color theory.
Together, we'll have fun while we are learning and creating.
So, no matter where you are on your photography journey, feel free to subscribe! I promise not to spam your inbox or be selling you something constantly. That's not who I am.
Subscribe, get to know me.

Editors Note...
Once a year a pull out a few sets from years past to start of the new year. In 2024 this year I have went back & revamped one of my favorite severe storms photo shoots of 2018
Back then I over colorized & over saturated the images. Pixelated & not my best work... Images were what I wanted but not the final product. If you want to see those to compare to these remastered images... here is your Flickr Link to that set of images...
But these are Gems of Gems.. I've even added about 50+ images in this set that I wasn't able to work on back in 2018. I even made a video with the old images to kick off the 2023 season... You can watch this right here on Flickr... Click Here ** Please remember I used the old images in this video **
Lightning is my forte... It is why I chase storms. To have an photo opportunity come up like this & traveled only 6 blocks from my home to get these pics...Gotta Luv Nebraska!
***
About that evening...
An epic night of sunset light and storm light @ twilight. Its almost every storm chasers dreams... or at least, in my own opinion, to get along side of a storm like this, as its firing away some incredible CC & CG every few seconds. What more could you ask for...
I was that Lucky Guy that evening. Just mother nature and I. Close to home after a few long storm chasing jaunts is just fine by me. She was producing and I was capturing every incredible second of this storm.. No Forking Bolt went away that evening without me getting a snap of its presence..

On the open plains of Nebraska...
August was a GEM month for severe storm structure. Folks... I didn't miss a beat.
Pure Eye Candy this one is. Open air supercells developing right as the dry line passed over us in South Central Nebraska.
I wasn't going to get underneath this one though it was close. I could have chased it, but I wanted to get the structure that day. Oh I got what I came for!
I had planned accordingly. Knowing that the storm was going to pass as it rapidly developed to the due east. I waited for bit under the hail core before I got into position to capture this storm.
Building Billowing Beautiful updrafts on the back side of this storm were memorizing. Perfect Supercell structure.
