On Sunday 11th December 2022, and with a temperature of minus 1C with the low winter sun making an attempt to break through the leaden sky, Direct Rail Services 37218 and 37419 power past Starbeck signalbox and on to Harrogate and Leeds working the 3S29 08:27 York Works-Hellifield-York Works railhead treatment train. In the area just behind the train was the junction to Wetherby and Leeds, and once stood Starbeck motive power depot, latterly coded 50D, which was closed in September 1959. The station dates from 1848 and originally served Harrogate. The North Eastern Railway signal box was originally known as Starbeck South and controls the level crossing on the busy A59 road between Knaresborough and Harrogate, today maintaining a mix of semaphore and colour light signals.

A sub-adult male leopard found early one evening near Kamfersboom in the lower Auob, Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park.
In February 2020 - when last we visited Kgalagadi just before lockdown - this leopard and his sibling were tiny cubs. (We spent many days in the hot sun, waiting in our vehicle, hoping for a closer view at the time.) To find them again after nine months, well and alive, was magic!
Different from many game parks in southern Africa, the leopards in this vast ecosystem of 37 256 square kilometers (14 384.6 sq miles) are not tracked and habituated to people and vehicles from a young age. They are, however, named as part of a citizens' science project, and visitors are encouraged to report sightings to the Kgalagadi Leopard Project

CSX job M783 heads north to Howell Yard on the Manchester Sub with a CW40-8 leading long hood forward, something these motors weren't built for. Running with a mirror isn't a preferred way of doing things, but I guess with the current state of affairs it is what it is. It doesn't make this late evening scene from April 19, 2019 taken at 19:46 all that appealing.

I spent a substantial amount of time along the Devils Lake Sub today, and did not see a single train. Two and a half hours this afternoon, after a good hour in the morning, and nothing. The second train since sunset is passing now. So I've dug this shot from earlier this year out to post tonight. A westbound grain train slogging up the grade through Arvilla.
Alabama Southern (ABS) Train 112 gets ready to enter KCS's Artesia Yard off the Tuscaloosa Sub to interchange with KCS before returning back east to Tuscaloosa, AL.
With B40-8's UP 1832 and 1833 for power, UP Train LSI55 05 uses Junland Siding on the UP Chester Sub. to run around the IHOYC 04. While it goes against conventional wisdom, the stack train will be in a long line of trains to get to the crew change at North Dexter.
The dispatcher on the territory today let the local zoom in and out of the sidings on the way north to get around several through freights between the switches on the main. This way, the local gets through Dexter and up to the kitty litter plant where it can get its work done and almost be headed back by the time the outbound crew even gets on the IHOYC.

It has been exactly a year and one day since my last Lego post, so coming back into it with a tribute to one of my favorite pieces of musical gear.
The Moog Sub Phatty is a monophonic (1-voice) analog synthesizer capable of some pretty fat, sub sounds. Has a 25-key keyboard and 31 knobs for shaping the overall sound. The big knob in the model controls the low-pass filter, which gives most Moog synthesizers their famous signature sound.
