Built for the Small Miscellaneous category of the thirteenth Colossal Castle Contest on classic-castle.com.

In 1092 AD, Chinese engineer Su Song and his crew completed construction of a magnificent astronomical clock- an impressive timekeeping device as ordered by the emperor himself.

The clock was powered by water, which fed from a trough that was kept at a constant height to ensure constant pressure and therefore consistent timekeeping. The water dripped into the scoops of a large water wheel, which consequently lurched forward every quarter of an hour. The motion of this wheel caused a multi-story tower in the front of the clock to turn, creating a loud sound and displaying certain small statues to indicate the hour. Additionally, the water wheel powered a rotating celestial globe on the interior of the clock, which was synchronized with the huge armillary sphere atop the clock tower.

In addition to its inherently impressive nature, Su Song's clock also featured the world's first documented endless power-transmitting chain drive, which connected the axle of the waterwheel to the mechanical device that powered the armillary sphere.

Su Song's machinery has been dutifully recreated (though somewhat simplified due to space and parts constraints) in this model. When the small handle on the rear of the model is turned, the waterwheel rotates, turning a series of gears that causes the front tower to rotate. Additionally, a vertical axle and gear system rotates the celestial globe inside the tower. The endless power-transmitting chain drive has been faithfully included, transferring energy from the axle of the waterwheel up to the rotational mechanism of the armillary sphere.

I had a lot of fun building the internal components, and with a few "bug fixes," that I installed, the machinery works 100% of the time. I took a video of its operation that I will upload when I get the chance.

Arab Republic of Egypt A340-200 SU-GGG parked at JFK. Not the greatest photo, but it was taken from the left side of an ERJ out the right side window, so I think it turned out okay all things considered!

NYS&W SU-99 departing Bogota with a decently sized train and two standard cab EMD’s. At the time, #3802 was the last active SD60 on Susquehanna’s roster with PTC. Around a month later, it was stripped of its PTC and was given to its brand “new” replacement, the SD70M-2. It would used for around a few more months before it’s eventual retirement from the railroad.

Featuring sketchy line-work profiles of endangered animals (jaguar, snow leopard, polar bear, bonobo) & human babies/ toddlers... childhood surely also endangered, along with the rest of the world... and all in a vale of tears background in pale gray-blue on white.

Sadly, the bonobo, along with the chimpanzee, our closest surviving relatives, is timid, not well studied & now endangered.

This interesting Flanker was hidden behind the public static area during the airshow.

69 blue is a T10K5, the prototype of the Su-27K (later Su-33) Flanker-D. It is the carrier-based version of the Flanker with canards and a reinforced landing gear.

This Flanker was still in service and appeared on the static display at Zhukovsky many times after I saw it in 1995.
