The Coast Defense Study Group and the Veterans
Association of USS Iowa worked with U.S. Navy Mid-Atlantic
for years to arrange the movement and display of this historic
USS Iowa 16-inch battleship barrel next to the Old Cape Henry
Lighthouse at Joint Expeditionary Base (JEB) Fort Story. The
project involved transporting the barrel - nearly 70 feet long and
weighing approximately 120 tons - from St. Juliens Creek Annex
in Chesapeake, Virginia, to JEB Fort Story using the streets and
highways of Portsmouth, Chesapeake, Norfolk, and Virginia Beach.
Displaying this barrel at Fort Story saved this historic barrel
from being scrapped and honors USS Iowa veterans who served on
the battleship during WWII, the Korean War, and the Cold War - as
well as all the Navy veterans who have served on ships homeported
in the Hampton Roads area.
This display will also recognize the U.S. Army's role in
providing coastal defense at Fort Story during World War II. Similar
barrels were placed here during the war throughout the Great Dune
- a short 400 yards from the display.
