Case Study “Forging”:

The wrench I will be evaluating is about .12 meters long, and about .005 meters thick. It is made out of steel and it weight no more than 0.4 kilograms. The manufacturing process used to build this wrench was forging.

In general, wrenches are drop forged in order to create a tool that will be used to provide torque. Wrenches need to be powerful, strong, stiff, and light. As stated before, the wrench was made from steel, and through research I was able to discover that most ‘’good’’ wrenches are chrome plated in order to resist corrosion, although I do not think mine has that.

As stated before the primary process used to create the wrench was drop forging. Because it’s steel, it was built while the material was very hot. After being drop forged, the size of the head and tail was machined to the right size and tolerance while getting rid of all the residue left from forging.(probably with a mill). To finish the piece, it was polished to give it a smooth surface. The handle of this wrench contains the wrench’s information, which was also drop forged in order to be more easily recognized.

Wrenches could be produced in many other ways such as sand casting, molds, and other ways but the problem is that the wrench would not be as strong as when forged. Forging also seems a less complicated way to build the piece, allowing workers to produce more pieces at the same time.

I would guess that these wrenches are produces at a very high rate, wrenches are one of the tools most people are likely to have in their homes, so I would guess that a company builds at least a few thousand daily. In addition, these tools are used by companies all over the world, so the demand for them must be high.

At first I tried a beach image, with palms and a calm sea... Then I realized that I will spend the whole summer studying... And that's the final result.

goofing around with processing and b/w conversion. I really like the curve of her profile being white on black, and Aengus' profile black against white.

she's keeping me company while i study on.

that is, if you consider "sleeping" as keeping me company.

Another beautiful day on campus.
