Whilst I probably should write my own definition of flame structures here's a link explaining what they are if anyone's interested or doesn't know!
I am delighted that I can now post some contemporary photographs. The conditions of my permits for South Bay kite aerial photography include a hiatus each year from the end of February to the start of September to avoid disturbing nesting birds. Thus, I eagerly await the start of fall and with it the chance to do some fieldwork.
On this occasion, I made a Saturday trip to the Eden Landing Ecological Reserve (ELER) near Hayward, California. I launched the kite from the west end of Salt Pond E13 and walked its northern perimeter to the Oliver Salt Works ruins. After hanging out at the new observation platform there, I then walked the levee separating E13 from E12. When I first started photographing at ELER this area was a dusty plain, the disused remnants of a former salt operation. Several years ago, as part of ELER’s Phase I Project, the restoration managers built a series of new levees and flow control structures so that the area could be tuned to serve as wildlife habitat. The levees created small sub-ponds, which have slightly different salinities and thus different colors.
After making my way down the levee to the pumphouse at the eastern end of the ponds, I paused to swap kites. The Sutton 30 I was using became painfully overpowered as the afternoon breeze freshened. Up went the Sutton 16, which was much more pleasant to handle and had ample lifting capacity. I then retraced my steps back up the levee and around Oliver Salt while shooting from a lower altitude. Altogether it was a pleasant day.
I am taking these documentary photographs under a Special Use Permit from the California Department of Fish & Wildlife. Kite flying is prohibited over the Eden Landing Ecological Reserve without a Special Use Permit.
Decided to stick close to home for this week's theme. This is the John Barrow monument in Ulverston, in surprisingly beautiful weather :-)
Last time we were up there it was ticking over midnight on New Year's Eve/Day, there was more of a view this time!
Built in 1901, this lovely, Romanesque Revival courthouse was designed by architect J.W. Golucke. The structure was placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1980.
It stands in the center of a roundabout in the middle of town. The former Madison County Courthouse was replaced in 1997.
Danielsville, Georgia is a quaint, Piedmont county seat village located to the northeast of Athens.
The IGM Annual Conference 2021, held on 24 November 2021 in a hybrid mode in Maputo, Mozambique, gathered local and international academics and development practitioners to present and discuss recent research on the socio-economic impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic in Mozambique and their policy implications.
The conference was structured around three thematic sessions with topics ranging from macroeconomic and labour market impacts of COVID-19 to the impact of the pandemic on the economic development in urban areas of the country. The event culminates with a panel discussion on the policy implications of the research presented.

Waterbury Fire was dispatched for a possible structure fire at 45 Summit St in the Brooklyn Section of the City. As crews responded multiple calls reporting the fire began to come into the ERC.
The first due assignment arrived to find the vacant dwelling at 45 Summit well involved and the B-side of a second vacant dwelling at 43 Summit was also in flames. Residents of 49 Summit were alerted to the fire which was also threatening their home by a passing motorist who noticed the fire and began blowing his car horn to alert area residents of the fire, evacuated the structure as fire fighters laid in supply lines. Crews were initially hampered by downed power lines as the flames burned through the service to the house.
With the heavy fire making an interior attack impossible crews utilized master streams as well as the monitor on Engine 8 to flood the fully involved building and protect he exposures on either side. The fire was knocked down after about 45 minutes but not before it had damaged the roof of the occupied structure and badly damaged the vacant structure on the opposite side.
Investigators pin pointed the origin of the fire to a couch on the second floor of the original fire building possible started by vagrants.

Structure takes a different and more intricate look at one of the worlds most famous buildings, the Eiffel Tower. We spend so long in awe at the building, its views and what it stands for that we don't always take in the leviathan nature of it's construction. Structure studies the lines, joints and crossings of this great building in black and white, high contrast images.
Students transitioned from using 2D materials to create sculptural forms to using toothpicks and candy to create 3D structures. Students were given 4 parts to build with: toothpicks, large gum drops, small gum drops, and candy corn. Students were allowed to work together or individually and tried to make the biggest structure while implementing a visual design element of their choice.
