Even though I'll be performing my upper body routine, before beginning any workout, whether for upper or lower body, I always perform a series of stretching exercises that warm up muscles all over my body.

I am flat on my back with my head motionless in a field of lush grass at a local park doing leg stretching exercises and totally enjoying the fantastic summer weather!

My mission was simple : infiltrate the deepest depths of their organisation, identify their key members, then eliminate them without mercy.

Entry into Galactic Handling and Logistics was laughably easy. No background identity checks, no need for referees, no blood or DNA samples required. In exchange for an hourly wage, modest lodgings and three hot meals a day. Surely these were privileges that only royalty enjoyed...and those pillows...oh so comfy.

No. I would not be swayed from my mission. I had to stay FOCUSED.

But, as I toiled in my alloted task...even if I could call it that, for what they passed off here as work would have been merely considered stretching exercises back at the dojo. Ubiquitous labour saving devices having replaced human toil. This 'powersuit' which I was issued had the strength of a thousand horses...but I was careful not to betray my feelings or attract suspicion. Blending in seemlessly, I took my time carrying out the day to day tasks, pretending to complain, intentionally making mistakes, engaging in idle chit chat.

Behaviour like that would have been punishable by death in my previous life. These were not the ways of the ninja...

Days passed, I was frustrated by their politics, their 'bureaucracy', there seemed to be an incredible amount of 'managers'. While they seemed to have been bestowed a managerial title, most did not posses any real ability, responsibility or respect. It was clear that I could not eliminate all these 'middle-managers', as they were refered as. There were too many, also there seemed to be no shortage of replacements.

All that changed on that fateful day. I heard of news that my clan had been destroyed. Poor investments in the real estate sector had reduced our savings and pension plans to little more than scrap paper. Our mightly clan, which had survived the Great Wars was destroyed by the greatest evil of them all : cash flow.

If I had any tear ducts, I would have wept.

So now I am torn. Do I still carry out my duties? Do I live out my existence in the role which I have adopted in disguise, but have grown to...enjoy? I do not know.

What I do know is that these boxes over there need stacking. And the boys always enjoy watching me use my Heaven Cloud Fist finishing move superior hand-eye co-ordination with the grappling hook. It amuses me as much as it does them.

I went to the Senior Center & walked with Linda, Hazel, Karen, & Lynn. After a few stretching exercises, we sat down in the Card Room where Lisa joined us. Shortly Karen arrived with our Cuban sandwiches from Empanadas & More. We enjoyed our food before playing a lively game of Chickenfoot (dominoes). After 4 rounds we packed them away, & I drove to the shop for Chelsea to wash & dry my hair. I like the results.

Modernist painter Georgia O’Keeffe (1887 – 1986)

Cosmetics entrepreneur Elizabeth Arden commissioned Georgia O'Keeffe to paint Jimson Weed, originally titled Miracle Flower, to hang in the exercise room of the new Gymnasium Moderne at Arden's Fifth Avenue Salon in New York City. During stretching exercises, clients of the salon "unfurled" like the flowers in O'Keeffe's painting on the wall behind them. Arden paid O'Keeffe $10,000, considered an astonishing amount at the time, for the largest floral composition the artist would ever create.

The four blossoms are placed in an energetic design that repeats the tight rhythm of the jimson weed's pinwheel-shaped flower. About this plant, which grew near the artist's home in New Mexico, O'Keeffe said, "When I think of the delicate fragrance of the flowers, I almost feel the coolness and sweetness of the evening." She emphasized her subject's fresh beauty with a bright, simplified palette and rhythmic treatment of light and shadow.

O'Keeffe, one of the first American modernists, was at the heart of the group of artists who gathered around Alfred Stieglitz, the photographer and art dealer who became her husband. The sheer size of her flowers-an arresting manipulation of scale-represented a radical modernist innovation.

"I'm not sure how well this is working out, Larry," I said finally.

We were sitting in the back seat of a downright palatial limo this morning. It was about 2:00 and I had left Sheree dozing in bed to answer a soft knock at our bedroom door.

It was Olaf, Larry Talbot's six foot eight manservant/minion. How he got into our house and past our trained attack cat (Winnie), I will never know. But I answered the knock and was ushered downstairs...all of which is the Reader's Digest version of how I came to be in the back seat of Larry's car in a t-shirt and boxers (my standard sleeping gear.)

"What do you mean?" asked Larry, his voice an arctic baritone.

"I mean some people think I'm nuts. Others have no idea what I'm -- I mean you're -- doing...even Sheree thinks you and I are the same guy."

Larry snorted. Not a pretty sound. I heard Olaf giggle from the front seat without turning around...also not a pretty sound.

"Poppycock," hissed my childhood friend. "Utter poppycock."

"You gotta quit saying shit like that, Larry," I said finally. "No one actually says 'poppycock' anymore. Makes you sound like a villain in a James Bond movie...or a cross-dresser from Queens. And we're getting off topic."

"Ah yes," he said. "People don't think I'm real. What does Easy Rider think?"

"Well...Easy Rider pretty much understands me. So he's fine. It's the other people."

Larry's lips compressed themselves into a knife-thin line. "You've shown them pictures of me, yes?"

"Well...yeah."

"So?"

"So what?"

"Larry -- they think I took the pics of me...and just said they're you."

"Poppycock," said Larry again.

I sighed and let it slide.

"Do the gym intimidation article today," he said finally.

I sighed and shook my head sadly. "That's not gonna help, man."

"Do you go to the gym?" demanded Larry.

Olaf snorted. Again. I briefly considered smacking the back of his head...but then came to my senses.

"No. I hate gyms," I said.

"So when you run the article, they will know it was I, Larry Talbot. And that I, Larry Talbot, am, in fact real."

"Really?" I asked.

He nodded emphatically.

So here it is:

HOW TO DEAL WITH GYM INTIMIDATION

by L. Talbot

It can be difficult to deal with intimidation at the gym when you're the "Before Picture." We "Before Pictures" are usually glum looking black and white people making no effort whatsoever to suck in our stomachs. Our entire presence is a resigned sigh. We never smile and there's an overall unhealthy look to us.

Much as I aspire to be the "After Picture" Guy with washboard abs, glistening teeth and an air of smug assurance, I know it's a long, long LONG way off. That's why I deal with gym intimidation by pretending to be indifferent to the pitying looks from all the "After Picture" people.

I remind myself that they are young and I am old. They can eat seven boxes of cookies and won't gain an ounce. If I eat a forkful of chocolate cake I will blow up like a self inflating raft and whalers will try to put a harpoon into me on my next trip to the beach.

So I slink into the change room and put my workout clothes on very quickly. I try to ignore the strutting naked guys (some of whom really need to reconsider BOTH the strutting and the naked parts) in the change room, lace up my sneakers and walk into Hell.

I am surrounded by Gym Bunnies. . . who you may know as the little slips of female matter that don't sweat and (I am reasonably certain) never actually work out. They are perfectly color coordinated and ALWAYS wear something skin-tight. This means that, out of respect for my wife, I will take off my glasses -- which transforms me into a half blind round little guy trying to find his way to the treadmill.

The Gym Bunnies feed on the attention they get from the Big Muscle Guys who are nearly always in the weight area, grunting and straining against massive loads they are curling, lifting, dropping and/or pushing. The BMG's (Big Muscle Guys) make a number of very loud "look at me" male noises as they work out.

When not sounding like fiercely constipated elephants, or admiring themselves in the mirror, the BMG's surreptitiously ogle the Gym Bunnies. Occasionally there will be actual interaction between a Gym Bunny and a BMG but not often. The ogling of the BMGs and the prancing of the Gym Bunnies is more ritual than substance. That's what I hear anyway.

Another strategy for dealing with gym intimidation: I will try to find a treadmill next to a guy who is fatter than me. Hopefully he is going to be sweating in a completely undignified manner and puffing like the Little Engine That Could. I want to work out next to him because he will make me look thinner and faster.

He'll look up at me with tired resigned eyes.

He knows why I have sought him out. So do I.

I'll smile brightly and do my stretching exercises. Maybe we'll nod at each other. Maybe not.

I'll mount the treadmill and start walking quickly.

He'll crank his up to a speed of 6 or so and for ten or twelve seconds we will both be tremendously impressed as he actually manages not to puke. But he'll reach forward with trembling fingers to reduce the speed and settle back into a slow walk.

He'll sneak a look around to check if anyone has noted his athletic prowess and when his eyes rest finally on me I'm ready with a nod and a thumbs up. He'll acknowledge it coolly. But inside I know that he's happy. It's always a joy to be noticed...even if it's just another Round Little Guy.

I'm happy too.

A blow has been struck against gym intimidation.

I am in the process of getting a gym t-shirt made. It will say "Gaze in Wonder, you Before Pictures! One Day You’re Gonna Look Just Like THIS!"

Arthritis- Spinal & Other Joints

Figure 1A and 1B. In A, a side view X-ray of the neck is shown where the neck joints and disc spaces are normal. In B, damaged joints and disc spaces due to spinal arthritis is shown. Can you see the difference between the x-rays?

What Is Arthritis?

Arthritis is a relatively generic term that actually encompasses a variety of different conditions. There are a various types of arthritis. Some of the more common are described Table 1. Figure 1A shows relatively normal joints making up the cervical spine, or bones of the neck. However Figure 1B shows significant degeneration of the joints.

Who Does Arthritis Affect?

More than 27 million people are affected by osteoarthritis (OA), making it the most common type of arthritis in the U.S. OA of the knee and hips is the most common cause of arthritis-related disability in the U.S. Most people with OA are over the age 45. Overall, more women are more likely than ment o develop OA. Radiographic signs of OA are sometimes seen in people as young as their 20’s.

What Causes Arthritis?

While some forms of arthritis can be hereditary, others can be related to immune system dysfunction. The cause of many forms of arthritis is idiopathic, or unknown. Primary osteoarthritis, the most common form of arthritis, is referred to as “wear-and-tear” arthritis, because it is known that the joints can wear out faster when used more or inappropriately. It is sometimes assumed that arthritis is a “normal” consequence of aging. However, not all people within any advanced age group develop arthritis. There are other factors that can lead to the development of osteoarthritis. For example, if there is a condition whereby your joints are under increased pressure during regular daily activities, those joints are likely to degenerate at an advanced rate.

Examination Procedures for the Diagnosis of Arthritis

While the diagnosis of arthritis is often assumed by the history and exam, sometimes other tests are ordered. This can include blood tests, usually if rheumatoid or another variant is a possibility, and X-rays of the involved and related joints. X-rays can show signs of arthritis and help to delineate which form a person may have.

Common Chiropractic & Other Conservative Treatments

Pain from arthritis is commonly helped from Chiropractic care, including spinal adjustments, manual stretching, exercises and traction. Chiropractic Biophysics® care can help restore normal alignment of the spine and pelvis thereby taking pressure off of the joints. Diminishing this pressure may diminish or stop the rate of degeneration of the spine, hips and other related joints.

Chiropractic Care May Have a Positive Influence on Arthritis

Many thorough studies have been performed on patients with symptoms that are often related to arthritis, in particular osteoarthritis and have shown Chiropractic care to be beneficial.1-17

Chiropractic Biophysics® (CBP®) care, by correcting or improving the overall structure of the spine can have an additional positive benefit of diminishing abnormal pressure on the affected joints.

Exercise improves cardiac health and controls several of the risk factors associated with Heart Conditions. However, Exercises also increase stress on the cardiovascular system and will precipitate or worsen cardiac symptoms. The essence is to strike the correct balance.

For those with healthy hearts and no symptoms, exercise must always be encouraged. For those with manifest cardiac unwellness and weak hearts, a supervised program and an understanding of exercise-related stress are emphasized.

Heart Exercises are often broadly speaking divided into 3 types – Aerobic exercises, Resistance Exercises, and Stretching Exercises.

Aerobics

Aerobics is additionally referred to as cardio exercise since the one major impact it has is on heart rate. The intensity is outlined as mild, moderate, and severe depending on the heart rate achieved throughout the exercise. As a rough calculation, the heart rate of an individual is 220 minus the age in years. The mild, moderate, and severe kind is once the heart rate reaches below 60 %, 60-80 %, and over 80 % severally throughout an exercise.

The heart's oxygen demand will increase with the rise in heart rate and is the principle utilized in the stress test once cardiac changes are assessed throughout such stress. A supervised exercise program is based on constant principles wherever you may be suggested on what level of aerobic exercise is safe. One could begin exercises at intervals some weeks of a cardiac event under a supervised program.

How aerobics will profit your Heart

Despite age, weight, or physical skills, aerobic exercise will have a positive impact on your heart and overall health. It doesn't only manages weight, and lowers blood pressure and cholesterol but also improves blood circulation. All of those factors reduce the chance of heart illness. In addition, will increase stamina, improves mood, and facilitate us to be active despite our age. A few samples of aerobic workouts include running or jogging, climbing stairs (at work or home), swimming, cycling, and taking part in sports like soccer, badminton, tennis, basketball, etc.

Resistance Exercises

Weight coaching, also referred to as Resistance Exercises or Muscle-strengthening Exercises, is one example wherever a bunch of muscles is moved against resistance. Resistance exercises have an additional impact on blood pressure than heart rate. It will increase the strength, size, power additionally, and endurance of the muscle. However, once resistance exercises involve heavy weights and breath holding, there may be an incredible rise in BP, and people with uncontrolled BP should avoid it. While at the same time, resistance exercise of lesser intensity lowers the BP, some believe even over aerobic exercises, in the long-term. greater repetitions of weights with lesser loads are suggested.

How Resistance Exercises will profit

Resistance Exercises strengthen your muscles. This will help you perform routine activities seamlessly and also defend your body from injuries. Additionally, strong muscles also enhance your metabolic rate, which means additional calories are going to be burnt even while at rest. A few samples of resistance exercises include lifting free weights (dumbbells, barbells, or hand weights), body-resistance workouts (pull-ups, squats, chin-ups, and pushups), and utilizing resistance bands or weight machines.

Stretching Exercises

Stretching Exercises, also known as flexibility workouts, doesn't contribute to your heart’s health, however, it will benefit your musculoskeletal health, that in turn, will help with joint pain, muscle cramping together with other musculoskeletal problems. Stretching Exercises must always be done to tone the system and build exercise safer and easier. It's crucial in allowing you to keep up your aerobic and resistance training workouts. The sudden stretch of muscles will cause pain and injury which might be avoided by some minutes of warm-up and cooling off, usually with stretch exercises. One should get Counselling on stretching of various muscles and muscle clusters from trained personnel for greater results.

In addition, yoga also has several health benefits, like lesser resting heart rate, higher respiratory function, improved blood circulation, and raised lung capacity. There are several studies that also show that yoga will facilitate lower blood pressure, which is extremely vital to decrease your risk for stroke, heart attack, and other health ailments. Yoga and meditation also can scale back stress, one of the most important risk factors for cardiovascular disease.

5 Signs of Heart issues You Mustn’t Neglect while physical exercise

Seek medical attention if you experience the following when you're exercising:

Chest Discomfort

Intense pain, fullness or squeeze within the center of the chest, or uncomfortable pressure will indicate several heart disorders. If you experience these, stop exercising and ask for an expert recommendation.

Light-headedness or giddiness

Experiencing fatigue is common while exercising, particularly if you lead an inactive lifestyle mostly. however, light-headedness and giddiness are causes for concern. Don’t ignore these.

Abnormal heart rhythm

Skipping a heartbeat or palpitations isn't a standard occurrence in most healthy people. Make sure you are careful about these symptoms.

Shortness of Breath

While shortness of breath to some extent is normal, if it persists for long or is accompanied by discomfort, then it’s a warning call. Consult your doctor in such a scenario.

Unusual Sweating

Sweating is once more normal, but cold sweats or sweating not to mention nausea or discomfort isn’t.

Conclusion

Regular exercise, a stable heart-healthy diet, and regular comprehensive healthy heart checks can facilitate keeping a tab and strengthening your heart. You should also understand the type, and how much exercise is good for you. Consult an expert Apollo cardiologist at Ask Apollo and visit Apollo ProHealth’s Heart day Page for more info..
