It's a lot of work to stand around a beach all day. One must do their stretching exercises to stay fit and healthy.

This Trumpeter Swan is one of the flock at LaSalle Park in Burlington, Ontario.

My mission was simple : infiltrate the deepest depths of their organisation, identify their key members, then eliminate them without mercy.

Entry into Galactic Handling and Logistics was laughably easy. No background identity checks, no need for referees, no blood or DNA samples required. In exchange for an hourly wage, modest lodgings and three hot meals a day. Surely these were privileges that only royalty enjoyed...and those pillows...oh so comfy.

No. I would not be swayed from my mission. I had to stay FOCUSED.

But, as I toiled in my alloted task...even if I could call it that, for what they passed off here as work would have been merely considered stretching exercises back at the dojo. Ubiquitous labour saving devices having replaced human toil. This 'powersuit' which I was issued had the strength of a thousand horses...but I was careful not to betray my feelings or attract suspicion. Blending in seemlessly, I took my time carrying out the day to day tasks, pretending to complain, intentionally making mistakes, engaging in idle chit chat.

Behaviour like that would have been punishable by death in my previous life. These were not the ways of the ninja...

Days passed, I was frustrated by their politics, their 'bureaucracy', there seemed to be an incredible amount of 'managers'. While they seemed to have been bestowed a managerial title, most did not posses any real ability, responsibility or respect. It was clear that I could not eliminate all these 'middle-managers', as they were refered as. There were too many, also there seemed to be no shortage of replacements.

All that changed on that fateful day. I heard of news that my clan had been destroyed. Poor investments in the real estate sector had reduced our savings and pension plans to little more than scrap paper. Our mightly clan, which had survived the Great Wars was destroyed by the greatest evil of them all : cash flow.

If I had any tear ducts, I would have wept.

So now I am torn. Do I still carry out my duties? Do I live out my existence in the role which I have adopted in disguise, but have grown to...enjoy? I do not know.

What I do know is that these boxes over there need stacking. And the boys always enjoy watching me use my Heaven Cloud Fist finishing move superior hand-eye co-ordination with the grappling hook. It amuses me as much as it does them.

I am lying flat on my back clad in a pair of black mini shorts doing light stretching exercises in a beautiful summer day!

Whenever I go back home to the Philippines, I always get to the Hong Kong airport, as a transit passenger, in the wee hours of the morning (around 5AM).

I love getting thereat that time because:

1. There aren't a lot of people in the airport, except for the people who sleep on the airport benches (who I assume stayed overnight at the airport) so its not ridiculously crowded unlike peak hours.

2. The empty airport gives me a chance to do some ridiculous stretching exercises, which I normally would not do in an airport full of people. Believe me, you need to stretch after a 16 hour flight :S

3. The early morning light is beautiful and I get a chance to take pictures of the planes (thank goodness the airport is mostly glass as this gives me more places to take pictures from!)

Tom McCall Waterfront Park is a place I photograph often when I’m in Portland. I’ll usually hit this same park 4 to 5 different times in the same day as there’s always something going on whether it’s an event, interesting people, or both. I prefer photographing interesting people, especially the ones who enjoy practicing physical art forms and moves such as Tai Chi, Nunchakus, or just plain stretching exercises like this guy. The park seems to give everyone a “safe” feeling where they can let their guard down and do whatever without being harassed or judged.

Here’s more:

Local residents of Yanaka gather for morning exercises. Someone played the NHK radio exercise program on a loudspeaker and lead the group in various stretching exercises under a canopy of cherry trees. Morning exercises are something you don't see too often anymore. First, they usually happen around 6:30 in the morning while most of us are asleep or getting ready for work. And second it's more of an old tradition that most young people wouldn't even think of taking part in anymore.

Europa-Park

Europa-Park is a theme park and the largest in Germany, and the second most popular theme park resort in Europe, following Disneyland Paris.

Europa-Park is located in Rust, in south-western Germany, between Freiburg and Strasbourg, France.

The park is home to 13 roller coasters, the oldest being Alpenexpress Enzian, a powered coaster that speeds through a diamond mine, and the newest coaster being the Ba-a-a Express, a small kiddie roller coaster. Europa-Park has very high capacity roller coasters and attractions meaning the park can accommodate up to approx. 60,000 guests per day. It counted just over 5.5 million visitors in 2015, generating an estimated total revenue of EUR 30 million per year.

Europa-Park is run by the Mack family, which have produced vehicles since 1780, circus wagons since 1880 and rollercoasters since 1921. Franz Mack (1921–2010) in 1958 took over the family firm, Mack GmbH & Co (now Mack Rides), together with his brothers. Together with his son Roland (b. 1949) he visited the USA in 1972 and was inspired to open a theme park in Germany, as an exhibition site for his company's products.

At first the park was planned to be located in Breisach. It was named "Europa-Park" after Breisach's nearby Europaweiher, a small artificial lake which commemorates a historical pilot poll in Breisach held in 1950, in which 95.6% of voters were in favour of European unification. The Breisach site was deemed unsuitable because of flooding hazard, and the project was moved some 30 km further north, where the Macks bought the park of the historical Balthasar castle in Rust. The park opened in 1975 with an area of 16 hectares. It counted 250,000 visitors in the first year, 700,000 in the second, passing the million mark in 1978.

Bonkers doing his stretching exercises in the afternoon warmth (with two fans to keep him from getting too hot from all of the exercise).

This was part of a group shoot we did at Point Woronzof, Anchorage, Alaska way back in July 2012.

Ashley H. is one of my all time favorite models and people - extremely intelligent, very photogenic, funny, very creative - and her legs are about 6 feet long! We did a little black dress theme at a painted tank on the beach on a very cold, wet day in Anchorage but I loved the results. I miss shooting with Ashley!!

For the second time this week I've been out of work early! Heaven forfend! This time it was for a clinical appointment, following on from #299.

I had a visit to the podiatry clinic based at the Royal. It does lots of good work (and some bloody awful work) and the people who work there seem to love it or hate it. One thing is for sure...it's one fugly building.

The podiatrist knew his stuff, and had a diagnosis inside of two minutes (which was a classic "I think I know what it is. Does this hurt? You screamed, yeah, I've got it nailed.")

I have tight calves (I'm not sure that's a compliment), so his recommendations are:

- Lose weight

- Do calf stretching exercises

- Lose weight

- Buy shoes with thicker heels

- Lose weight

- Get some insoles

- Lose weight

I think the message came through there ;)

OK, I know that this is a baseball image (sort of anyway) even though Winter is just beginning. But the look on that athletic trainer's face as he helps the ballplayer do stretching exercises is just priceless.

So, boys and girls of all ages, I am challenging you to a captions contest. In comments, write a caption (or captions for each person) for this image. Think of a caption as words that would fit into a balloon as in a comic strip.

The winner gets a big YAY from me and the official title as Cool Lessons Caption Champ of 2011.

Common politeness.

It is hard, here in Japan, to behave as a European commonly would -- to be clumsy, to keep oneself to oneself, to push ahead in a queue, to speak into one’s mobile phone in a confined public space or a railway carriage, to drop a cigarette butt in the street, to forget to thank people who have been of service, etc.

Japanese people wear gauze masks only sometimes to protect themselves, most commonly from pollen at hay fever time. The usual reason for wearing a mask is to protect others, because the wearers themselves have a cold.

Upon entering a shop, you are greeted by several staff with a “Welcome”, as they stop for a moment and then continue to go about their business. Every item you buy, every receipt you get, every piece of change you receive, is handed over politely with two hands (or in a little tray), and eye contact is made with the customer. Both thank each other before continuing.

The young footballers, after their regular practice sessions, do some stretching exercises as directed by their captains, then change into their post-training uniforms. There can be a lot of chatting, teasing and laughter going on between them and the coaches at this time. When the young footballers are ready, they gather round their coaches, listen to a pep talk and finally take their leave with a word of thanks and a group bow.

This morning, in the family run hotel where I was staying, I noticed that all the Japanese guests passed by the kitchen when leaving the dining room after breakfast, thanking the staff for their good meal.

If you stay in a larger hotel and leave by the hotel bus, the staff will come out, one of them will address the guests in the bus and wish them a safe journey, then several will bow as the bus leaves and they wave off the passengers.

Train drivers and taxi drivers wear white gloves. Taxis have buttons with which the driver can open the rear door and car boot, for passengers to stow their luggage (with the help of the driver if needed) and find their seats.

Shinkansen and major local trains are cleaned when they reach their terminus. When the train arrives, the cleaners in their pastel coloured uniforms will already be in position at each carriage door. As passengers alight, they bow to greet them, help children or elderly passengers off the train if necessary, and hold out rubbish bags to collect any items which the passengers have not yet deposited in the bins inside the trains. When the cleaning staff leave the train again, all together at a signal, they stand at the doors of the carriages they have just worked on and bow to the new passengers boarding the train.

The trolley ladies also wait by the side of the train, smartly dressed in dark uniforms and white gloves, looking far more business like and attractive than the average cabin crew of a major airline. They have their own direct doors to board the shinkansen and are helped in this by the platform workers, heaving in their trolleys and provisions. Once inside, they change into their working uniforms, in pastel colours and with an apron and start offering the numerous goodies on their trolleys. Every time they enter a carriage, they bow politely, and they do so again when they leave the carriage. Even though the passengers may be facing in the opposite direction, the bow is just as friendly and polite.

The conductors coming to check the tickets, also bow as they enter and leave each carriage. The first time they arrive on a particular rail journey, they stop for a moment inside each carriage and explain what they have come to do. If anyone has any questions, for instance about connecting trains, they answer them willingly, looking up the information if necessary.

None of this costs any time, nor is it a major effort, yet it helps hugely in keeping the Japanese wheels (and not just those of the railways!) turning. A person surrounded by politeness and good behaviour will want to behave politely too. In Japan, you develop not only the Japanese language as such, but also the body language that goes with it!

Take it easy on the stretching exercises, girl!

Well my wish for "Tatters" the Small Tortoiseshell has come true. Yesterday morning i had at least three fresh Small Tortoiseshell hatch out and after a few wing stretching exercises on my stone wall they plonked themselves onto my Red Valerian and gorged happily in some welcome warm sunshine.

These are two different butterflies as you can see in their markings alongside their thorax/abdomen area.

V-neck gowns rock. Sheckshay, na' mean?

So thank you again for your kind words and warm wishes. I had lots of luck today. My MRI—which I've been trying to get since my last birthday—was painful but brief. And as we drove toward the hospital to pick up my x-rays, I checked my messages.

The nurse practitioner recommended to me by the ER doc had an appointment available at 1:30. I was torn. The secretary for another doctor had helped me get my MRI, but she also said it could be three weeks before I got seen, and I couldn't get any results—or advice—on the phone until then. So which was more important—my back and the risk of permanent damage? Or someone's few minutes of time?

My mom took me to brunch at Clementine, where I had half a shrimp salad sandwich and a chocolate chip cookie. And we came home just long enough for me to straighten the bedrooms a little and my mom to vacuum and sweep the living room.

I waited nearly an hour to be seen. The NP asked me a bunch of questions, and then she read my MRI. I told her, "OK, now it may surprise you, but there's a poodle on my spine."

It took her seconds to announce that I have a badly herniated disk. So here's what that means, because I didn't know, either.

The disks are the sponge-like things between the bones. They're really like jelly—cushioning between the vertebrae. When you get older, it dries out. But it can also escape from its spot when two vertebrae get compressed. Consider an Oreo being squished; the creamy filling spills out. Mine has oozed into the spinal column, where it's pressing on nerves. That's why I'm all bunched up and in pain. It's also really swollen and bulging.

So the first thing they do is put me on Medrol for six days to reduce the swelling. And next week, I have to go for a cortisone injection. :( She says it may take two of them for me to feel better. If it doesn't work, they would have to do surgery, but we're all sure it will work. Because it has to.

Meantime, I can pretty much stop all the pain meds, because they don't actually work on this. And she said I can drink beer while I'm taking the Medrol. So all will be right with the world.

Apparently, I've had this a long time—at least a year. Stretching exercises will give the disk more room, but there's not much else I can do for the moment except rest. And drink.
