Two different yard jobs blur past my location at a whopping 10 MPH. One shoving back into the yard, and another pulling a cut of cars out. Meanwhile storm clouds seem to threaten the area, but produce no results.

[There are 8 images in this set] Pyramid Motors in Lynchburg, Virginia, an automobile dealership for Ford and Lincoln, came into being in 1937. Located on Federal Street, the building is described stylistically as Art Deco or Art Moderne. Built from plans of local architect Stanhope Johnson, Robert John Keller Jr., the structure has a brick foundation and brick walls with an asphalt roof. The building is a one-story, long streamlined structure with a yellow brick facade, accented in the upper part by horizontal bands of red and yellow brick. Three distinct areas characterize the dealership: (1) the semi-circular entrance featuring corbelled yellow brick with a red, circular metal canopy attached to the building by chains; (2) the showroom located to the left of the entry with red as the dominant color and with a wall of large windows through which the automobiles could tempt prospective customers; (3) and the service area to the right of the entrance, using yellow brick as the major color, and with banks of multiple-light steel windows divided by wide brick pilasters. A large chimney is above the service area. The structure presumably reflected the streamlined cars being sold, especially the Lincoln Zephyr. ( en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lincoln-Zephyr ). In 1948 the building was sold and housed the Turner Buick Corporation, which operated until 1975. It's had other uses since then and currently is used by Centra Health for its PACE program--Program of All-Inclusive Care for the Elderly.
The building has an individual listing on the National Register of Historic Places, listed November 1, 2007 with ID #07001140. The pdf file of the nomination form is located at

The three streamlined coaches of the train. Each car on this train is 28 studs long, which is longer than my usual 24 studs long standard.
This is one of only six Lancia Asturas bodied by Battista "Pinin" Farina with similar cabriolet coachwork before World War II. Commissioned by a Lancia dealer known as Bocca, its clean, racy, streamlined coachwork complements the Lancia Astura's innovative narrow angle V-8 engine and low stance. Discovered in England in the early Sixties, it was brought to Pininfarina's attention and held in such high regard by the company founder that the company did a complete restoration (which amounted to a reconstruction) of the body without charge, going to great lengths to ensure its presentation including bringing back the artisan who spun its original lightweight wheel discs in 1938 to make new ones. In the 1970's it was owned by Eric Clapton who described it as the most fun he had ever had "off stage and out of bed". Subsequently it was acquired by Pininfarina and displayed for many years in the company museum. It was acquired by its most recent private owner directly from Pininfarina. Its history since the Sixties is well documented and includes an article in the British magazine Classic & Sports Car. It has been maintained in excellent condition since its restoration and boasts many exceptional and unusual features including dual wipers on the driver's side of the opening vee windshield, polished wheel discs, Marchal head and fog lights, beautiful wood dash with Jaeger gauges, seatback ashtrays for the rear seat passengers, fabulous brown leather upholstery with basket weave seat backs -- not embossed, but individual strips woven together in a striking and unusual pattern -- and a subtle damascening treatment of the chrome beltline molding. The Astura was arguably the most luxurious, comfortable automobile built in Italy in the years just before the war. It was powered by an overhead camshaft 2,973cc V-8 with a vee angle of only 17 degrees. The narrow vee angle let Lancia employ one of the company's more innovative ideas, a single cylinder head for both banks of the V-8. The coachwork is balanced and seductive, with large chrome Marchal headlights tucked between the front fenders and the Lancia grille and a tapered, almost boattail, rear deck surmounted by chrome luggage carriers. An important artifact of Italian design and Pinin Farina history with a documented celebrity history, it runs and drives like a dream and will always be recognized as a distinguished automobile of the highest quality.

If you scratch that Imron paint on my streamlined tender, I will destroy your front end loader. This is one big steam engine. I have always felt privledged to have seen it and ridden behind it when Southern operated it as part of their steam program. Wish I could remember the dates or the place. But that is irrelevant to me as I was there.

Virginia & Truckee Railroad McKeen Motor Car No. 22. This unique self-propelled train car was built in 1910 by the McKeen Motor Car Company of Omaha, Nebraska. It had a very sleek, streamlined look for it's day, including a wind resistant front nose. Sold for scrap in 1946, for many years the body was part of a local plumbing store in Carson City. It has recently been restored to its former glory.

The locomotive was built by LIMA in 1941, and is a modern, semi-streamlined, oil-burning, 4-8-4, Northern class steam locomotive built to haul luxury passenger trains in California. The train is operating on the SCL (former ACL) mainline to Clearwater where it will switch over to the former SAL mainline heading to Tampa. The AFT is bound for it's next display and exhibit stop in Lakeland, Florida.

The glossy brochure issued by the British Transport Commission who, along with the railways that served the Terminal, operated the UK's ex-railways docks, harbours and inland waterways through the Docks and Inland Waterways Executive. It describes the fine Ocean Terminal constructed in post-war austerity and opened on 31 July 1950 to serve the then huge numbers of passengers who travelled on liner services and arrived or departed Southampton by rail. As can be seen the Terminal was designed to deal with a full range of services from arrival or departure by train at 'ground level' and on upper floors services such as baggage, customs and passport control were situated along with a wide range of almost airport style passenger amenities; banks, shops and restuarants.
Architecturally there is something of a Festival of Britain style but overall it has a feel of a pre-war design that was dusted down and I suspect that the Southern Railway, who pre-nationalisation ran Southampton's Docks, may have had a design that was delayed by war. There is a certain restraint in terms of design shown here - but very plush and quite corporate. I like that very corporate look that includes all the service areas, shops and banks.
I quote R P Biddle, the Docks and Marine Manager of the Transport Commission - "there is a streamlined efficiency about the operations which the ocean passenger of today rightly expects and which instantly creates a favourable impression". Oddly no architect is credited.
But it was all very commodious and in pre-jet aviation days it was one of the ports of entry or exit to the UK and I wonder how many passengers waved hello or goodbye to people standing on the liner-like decks of the building over the years.
As liner traffic decreased in the 1960s the Terminal saw less and less use and was finally closed in 1980 and sadly, amidst some protest, it was demolished in 1983. A shame really as within a decade Southampton was busy again with cruise ship traffic and my, would not this building restored have made quite the sight?
Recent shift to AMC enables streamlined logistics services

CAMP CASEY, SOUTH KOREA – The logisticians who look after Warrior Country’s transportation, maintenance and supply needs are now able to provide even more robust services thanks to a recent change that gives them broader, faster reach into the Army’s overall logistics network.
The U.S. Army Garrison Red Cloud and Area I’s Directorate of Logistics ran the Central Issue Facility at Camp Hovey and the transportation motor pools that provide buses and vehicle maintenance in Warrior Country.
They did that as part of the U.S. Army Installation Management Command, of which USAG Red Cloud and Area I is a part.
But, effective Oct. 1, all Army DOL assets shifted from IMCOM to the U.S. Army Materiel Command. AMC is a global command that supports Army logistics worldwide.
The shift plugs in the DOL to AMC’s global logistics network.
And in Warrior Country, DOL is now part of the 403rd Army Field Support Brigade Area I, said DOL director Dennis Williams.
For Warrior Country customers, that’ll mean that when one of the 403rd AFSB’s facilities in Warrior Country runs low on an item – helmets or vehicle parts – for example, they can be shipped from another facility that does have them, even one in, say, Japan, Williams said.
The transition will not pose any confusion or inconvenience for DOL customers, he said.
“For Area I it will be transparent,” he said. “The services we did yesterday are the same services that we’ll do today and tomorrow.”
The Area I DOL marked the shift to AMC with a low-key patch-and-pin ceremony Oct. 3 at Camp Casey’s Carey Fitness Center.
There, DOL’s Soldiers traded in their seven-sided IMCOM patch for the shield-shaped AMC patch, while civilians received an AMC lapel pin.
“On behalf of the Army Materiel Command I want to welcome you to the new AMC family,” Col. Michael Lopez, commander of the 403rd AFSB, said during the ceremony.
For the more than 300 DOL Soldiers, Department of the Army Civilians and Korean civilians in Warrior Country, the 403rd AFSB is now their higher headquarters. But, they’re not alone. On Oct. 1, the 403rd also took command and control of all DOLs in Korea, Japan and Okinawa.
The changeover process was set in motion in March 2005 when the leadership of IMCOM and AMC decided to develop a logistics partnership to improve support to the Army and the Army’s transformation plan.

This book celebrates streamlining as epitomized by the work of Raymond Loewy, Donald Deskey, Henri Dreyfuss, Russel Wright, and Norman Bel Geddes, and introduces other industrial designers, also highlighting the resurgence of streamlining among international vanguard designers from the 1980s to the present.
Patent drawings and period photographs demonstrate the usage of these dynamically styled objects. Two hundred objects drawn from the Eric Brill Collection (recently donated to the American Friends of Canada) and supplemented by the Stewart Collection of 20th Century Design were photographed for this book. The Boot Court are two Streamlined Moderne style buildings constructed in 1939 and 1946. The main building had carports to protect guest's vehicles from weather. After Interstate Highway 44 was constructed, most automobile travelers bypassed the Boot Court and the facility fell into a state of neglect and eventually closed. Several attempts were made to reopen, the most recent in 2021. A new owner took control of the property and five rooms in the 1946 building were refurbished and available for occupancy.
