Virginia & Truckee Railroad McKeen Motor Car No. 22. This unique self-propelled train car was built in 1910 by the McKeen Motor Car Company of Omaha, Nebraska. It had a very sleek, streamlined look for it's day, including a wind resistant front nose. Sold for scrap in 1946, for many years the body was part of a local plumbing store in Carson City. It has recently been restored to its former glory.

The glossy brochure issued by the British Transport Commission who, along with the railways that served the Terminal, operated the UK's ex-railways docks, harbours and inland waterways through the Docks and Inland Waterways Executive. It describes the fine Ocean Terminal constructed in post-war austerity and opened on 31 July 1950 to serve the then huge numbers of passengers who travelled on liner services and arrived or departed Southampton by rail. As can be seen the Terminal was designed to deal with a full range of services from arrival or departure by train at 'ground level' and on upper floors services such as baggage, customs and passport control were situated along with a wide range of almost airport style passenger amenities; banks, shops and restuarants.

Architecturally there is something of a Festival of Britain style but overall it has a feel of a pre-war design that was dusted down and I suspect that the Southern Railway, who pre-nationalisation ran Southampton's Docks, may have had a design that was delayed by war. There is a certain restraint in terms of design shown here - but very plush and quite corporate. I like that very corporate look that includes all the service areas, shops and banks.

I quote R P Biddle, the Docks and Marine Manager of the Transport Commission - "there is a streamlined efficiency about the operations which the ocean passenger of today rightly expects and which instantly creates a favourable impression". Oddly no architect is credited.

But it was all very commodious and in pre-jet aviation days it was one of the ports of entry or exit to the UK and I wonder how many passengers waved hello or goodbye to people standing on the liner-like decks of the building over the years.

As liner traffic decreased in the 1960s the Terminal saw less and less use and was finally closed in 1980 and sadly, amidst some protest, it was demolished in 1983. A shame really as within a decade Southampton was busy again with cruise ship traffic and my, would not this building restored have made quite the sight?

Recent shift to AMC enables streamlined logistics services

CAMP CASEY, SOUTH KOREA – The logisticians who look after Warrior Country’s transportation, maintenance and supply needs are now able to provide even more robust services thanks to a recent change that gives them broader, faster reach into the Army’s overall logistics network.

The U.S. Army Garrison Red Cloud and Area I’s Directorate of Logistics ran the Central Issue Facility at Camp Hovey and the transportation motor pools that provide buses and vehicle maintenance in Warrior Country.

They did that as part of the U.S. Army Installation Management Command, of which USAG Red Cloud and Area I is a part.

But, effective Oct. 1, all Army DOL assets shifted from IMCOM to the U.S. Army Materiel Command. AMC is a global command that supports Army logistics worldwide.

The shift plugs in the DOL to AMC’s global logistics network.

And in Warrior Country, DOL is now part of the 403rd Army Field Support Brigade Area I, said DOL director Dennis Williams.

For Warrior Country customers, that’ll mean that when one of the 403rd AFSB’s facilities in Warrior Country runs low on an item – helmets or vehicle parts – for example, they can be shipped from another facility that does have them, even one in, say, Japan, Williams said.

The transition will not pose any confusion or inconvenience for DOL customers, he said.

“For Area I it will be transparent,” he said. “The services we did yesterday are the same services that we’ll do today and tomorrow.”

The Area I DOL marked the shift to AMC with a low-key patch-and-pin ceremony Oct. 3 at Camp Casey’s Carey Fitness Center.

There, DOL’s Soldiers traded in their seven-sided IMCOM patch for the shield-shaped AMC patch, while civilians received an AMC lapel pin.

“On behalf of the Army Materiel Command I want to welcome you to the new AMC family,” Col. Michael Lopez, commander of the 403rd AFSB, said during the ceremony.

For the more than 300 DOL Soldiers, Department of the Army Civilians and Korean civilians in Warrior Country, the 403rd AFSB is now their higher headquarters. But, they’re not alone. On Oct. 1, the 403rd also took command and control of all DOLs in Korea, Japan and Okinawa.

The changeover process was set in motion in March 2005 when the leadership of IMCOM and AMC decided to develop a logistics partnership to improve support to the Army and the Army’s transformation plan.

This book celebrates streamlining as epitomized by the work of Raymond Loewy, Donald Deskey, Henri Dreyfuss, Russel Wright, and Norman Bel Geddes, and introduces other industrial designers, also highlighting the resurgence of streamlining among international vanguard designers from the 1980s to the present.

Patent drawings and period photographs demonstrate the usage of these dynamically styled objects. Two hundred objects drawn from the Eric Brill Collection (recently donated to the American Friends of Canada) and supplemented by the Stewart Collection of 20th Century Design were photographed for this book. A full bibliography, biographies of the designers, and index complete the study.

The Boot Court are two Streamlined Moderne style buildings constructed in 1939 and 1946. The main building had carports to protect guest's vehicles from weather. After Interstate Highway 44 was constructed, most automobile travelers bypassed the Boot Court and the facility fell into a state of neglect and eventually closed. Several attempts were made to reopen, the most recent in 2021. A new owner took control of the property and five rooms in the 1946 building were refurbished and available for occupancy.
