Recent shift to AMC enables streamlined logistics services

CAMP CASEY, SOUTH KOREA – The logisticians who look after Warrior Country’s transportation, maintenance and supply needs are now able to provide even more robust services thanks to a recent change that gives them broader, faster reach into the Army’s overall logistics network.

The U.S. Army Garrison Red Cloud and Area I’s Directorate of Logistics ran the Central Issue Facility at Camp Hovey and the transportation motor pools that provide buses and vehicle maintenance in Warrior Country.

They did that as part of the U.S. Army Installation Management Command, of which USAG Red Cloud and Area I is a part.

But, effective Oct. 1, all Army DOL assets shifted from IMCOM to the U.S. Army Materiel Command. AMC is a global command that supports Army logistics worldwide.

The shift plugs in the DOL to AMC’s global logistics network.

And in Warrior Country, DOL is now part of the 403rd Army Field Support Brigade Area I, said DOL director Dennis Williams.

For Warrior Country customers, that’ll mean that when one of the 403rd AFSB’s facilities in Warrior Country runs low on an item – helmets or vehicle parts – for example, they can be shipped from another facility that does have them, even one in, say, Japan, Williams said.

The transition will not pose any confusion or inconvenience for DOL customers, he said.

“For Area I it will be transparent,” he said. “The services we did yesterday are the same services that we’ll do today and tomorrow.”

The Area I DOL marked the shift to AMC with a low-key patch-and-pin ceremony Oct. 3 at Camp Casey’s Carey Fitness Center.

There, DOL’s Soldiers traded in their seven-sided IMCOM patch for the shield-shaped AMC patch, while civilians received an AMC lapel pin.

“On behalf of the Army Materiel Command I want to welcome you to the new AMC family,” Col. Michael Lopez, commander of the 403rd AFSB, said during the ceremony.

For the more than 300 DOL Soldiers, Department of the Army Civilians and Korean civilians in Warrior Country, the 403rd AFSB is now their higher headquarters. But, they’re not alone. On Oct. 1, the 403rd also took command and control of all DOLs in Korea, Japan and Okinawa.

The changeover process was set in motion in March 2005 when the leadership of IMCOM and AMC decided to develop a logistics partnership to improve support to the Army and the Army’s transformation plan.

The streamlined exterior of 4449 sometimes hides the fact that she's a workaday steam locomotive under all that orange paint and skirting. Here's the front flue sheet and smokebox.

Union Pacific steam locomotive # 8444, a FEF-3 class Northern is seen on a railfan trip operating on the mainline out of Denver, Colorado to Cheyenne, Wyoming, and return, July 1972. The locomotive is a modern, oil burning, powerful and fast steam locomotive built by ALCO during the 1940's. This locomotive was used for years on fast streamlined UP passenger train, later downgraded to lesser passenger runs and eventually delegated to fast freight service. The locomotive has never been taken off the UP roster and has remained active all these years as a railfan and executive train hauling locomotive. At the time of the photo, the UP had a large fleet of former streamlined passenger train cars that were dedicated for the railfan trips and customer promotional trips. Today the locomotive in now wearing its original active number of # 844.

BR/LMS Stanier Coronation Class 4-6-2 Pacific No. 46225 'Duchess of Gloucester' at Carlisle Kingmoor Shed on 17th May 1964. Built at Crewe Works in May 1938 and originally streamlined, it was withdrawn from 12B Carlisle Upperby shed in September 1964 and cut up by Arnott Young, Troon in October 1964.

The London Midland and Scottish Railway (LMS) Coronation Class was a class of express passenger steam locomotives designed by William Stanier. They were an enlarged version of the LMS Princess Royal Class. Several examples were originally built as streamlined, though this was later removed. The non-streamlined locomotives were often referred to as Duchesses, though to enginemen they were often known as Big Lizzies.

The first five locomotives, Nos. 6220–6224, were built in 1937 at Crewe. They were streamlined and painted Caledonian Railway blue with silver horizontal lines to match the Coronation Scot train they were built to haul. The second five locomotives of the class, Nos. 6225–6229, were also streamlined, but were painted in the more traditional crimson lake, with gilt horizontal lining. This was to match the standard LMS stock and a planned brand new Coronation train made up of articulated coaches.

The streamlining was removed from the fitted locomotives from 1946 onwards. It had been found to be of little value at speeds below 90 mph, and was unpopular with running shed employees as it caused difficulty of access for maintenance. Only three locomotives were still streamlined at the end of the LMS period and they had been stripped by the end of 1949. Only 46243 City of Lancaster carried its British Railways number while streamlined.

They were the most powerful passenger steam locomotives ever to be built for the British railway network, estimated at 3300 horsepower and making them far more powerful than the diesel engines that replaced them.

Three Duchesses have been preserved. (4)6229 Duchess of Hamilton, (4)6233 Duchess of Sutherland have both been in service on main line railtours. The third locomotive completed, (4)6235 City of Birmingham, was the centrepiece in the now defunct Birmingham science museum. The locomotive was put in place and the museum built around her. (4)6235 is now located at ThinkTank in Birmingham.

Following a successful appeal run by Steam Railway Magazine, 46229 has been re-streamlined. The locomotive was moved to Tyseley Locomotive Works, where the work was carried out. The project was completed in 2009, and the locomotive returned to York on 18 May, now wearing her pre-war number 6229 and taking her place at the heart of a new National Railway Museum temporary exhibition.

A trainspotter, Howie Milburn, can be seen in the cab wearing a pullover.

Recent shift to AMC enables streamlined logistics services

At the bus station in Springfield, MA.

In contemporary reviews the streamlined body was praised for its lack of wind noise at speed and the smooth ride of its suspension. Also liked was the light steering, despite requiring only 1 5/8ths turns of the wheel from lock-to-lock.

This was a contest entry. The W17 is zero emissions. Carbon kevlar tubes streamlined on the body create more surface area & supply air-cooled headed steam of dioxygen & water vapor emissions which recycle into a hydrogen fuel cell & convert into more hydrogen. With multi-layer graphene nano-surface brakes, breaking accuracy & power offer extreme stability to corner & avoid tight proximity collisions. Front wings can be driver-controlled like original DRS zones & auto-actuating for decreased drag or increased downforce.

Seaboard Coast Line view of a former Atlantic Coast Line modernized heavyweight Pullman car that is located in the railroad yard at Lakeland, Florida, 1970's. This Pullman car was still lettered for the ACL and appeared to be used in work train service. The metallic steam train line had been removed from this car. This car had a streamlined roof profile, although it was higher than the lightweight cars approximately 4 to 6 inches. The car had modernized trucks with the installation of roller bearings and it also had skirts, retrackable steps, dutch doors and tightlock couplers and modernized flat ends. No doubt when this car was in passenger service it also had a refurbished interior, maybe in a more modern motif. To the left is another heavyweight Pullman car use in work train service. This car's road number appears to be # 1131.

This experimental Pre-1938 stock never ran in passenger service. First tested on the Piccadilly Line then the Northern Line. At the outbreak of WW2 it was stabled in one of the spare siding off the depot at Edgware where they remained until late 1947 when the whole train (four cars then) was moved over night back to Acton works.
