This is the only picture of Joop de Wolff (20 April 1909 - 11 December 1934) I know of.

The same photo in a wider crop you can find here: www.dewielersite.net/db2/wielersite/coureurfiche.php?cour...

We have the bad luck that Joop did not participate in the Amsterdam Six Day in that only year of which the Dutch cycling historian George Hogenkamp published pictures of all participants in Amsterdam.

I came across De Wolff repeatedly while I was digging in the history of the velodrome that was used in the village where I live now. A rural velodrome just outside Amsterdam which at best also played a small role in the life of my grandfather as a pacemaker.

About this Vekabaan are many cycling stories. The following one, the attempt Joop de Wolff made to improve the world hour record, is one of them.

Joop de Wolff and the world hour record

For me the story began as an article in Het Vaderland of Monday, September 2, 1934, written in a formal, a bit old fashion Dutch that I fortunately can not convert to just such English style:

THE WORLD hour record.

Wolf wants a record undertake.

We learn that on Sunday, September 9 the Amsterdam cyclist J. de Wolff will attempt to improve the world hour record of 44.777km. The attempt will take place at the Vekabaan in Duivendrecht.

Yesterday afternoon the Vekabaan is officially measured by a surveyor from the Land Registy. Messrs. G. Hogenkamp and J. Zeegers Veeckens were present as officials from the Dutch Cycling Union (N.W.U.).

Monday, the official papers will be sent to Paris through the N.W.U. to the U.C.I. This is necessary associated with the new provisions, that the U.C.I. first must approve with the attempts which will be done to improve the world record.

It's as good as certain that this approval will be given.

This attempt to improve the world record, caused quite a stir. Joop Wolff made his effort without any additional preparation. Yet he approached the hour record until just a few hundred meters. A very good performance.

The immediate result was that he attracted attention of several foreign directors of a velodrome and that Joop managed to conclude contracts for Paris, Brussels and Ghent. His future looked bright!

However this story ends in tragedy. Maybe because Joop was not wise to his powers, or maybe because he was just unlucky.

From 2 to 8 November 1934 he participated in the “Derde Amsterdamsche Zesdaagsche” ("Third Amsterdam Six Days").

During that six days he again managed to draw the attention.

Together with Jan van der Heijden he ended on a very honorable fifth place with only two laps down. Before riders such as Pellenaars and Braspennix!

Immediately after this six-day Joop Wolff turned out to be ill. With pneumonia he was admitted to the Wilhelmina Gasthuis in Amsterdam. In the next days his condition worsened so that in the end the doctors had to give up hope of recovery. A month later, on December 11 1934 he died at age 25.

He was buried in the Cemetery "Vredenhof" nearby the Haarlemmerweg.

About the world hour record

Earlier that year, 1934, the U.C.I. decided not to recognize any record that was achieved on a recumbent or other streamlined bike.

Also, it prohibited the use of those bikes in races.

That is why on paper the hour record was not improved between 1914 and 1933.

Then the Dutchman Jan van Hout in Roermond set the record at 44.588 km, a distance that was improved the same year by Frenchman Maurice Richard in Sint-Truiden.

In reality in 1932 the record on a recumbent / streamlined stood already at 49.99 km (realized by Marcel Berhet).

The Oliver 70 was part of the "Streamlined Series" which also included the Oliver 60 and the old style Oliver 88. It was manufactured from 1937 to 1948. The row-crop configuration could have either dual or single front wheels, and even had an adjustable wide front end option. The Oliver 70 was also offered in the standard, orchard and industrial configurations.

They were sold in the USA as the Oliver 70, painted green with red wheels. When sold in Canada they were painted red with cream colored wheels and were sold under the Cockshutt brand as the Cockshutt 70. With the optional 6 speed transmission these tractors are capable of traveling 13 mph down the road. An early advertisement states "Power when you want it - power when you need it - power to help put in crops when field conditions are right and time and help are limited. That's the power you'll find in an Oliver Row Crop 70." The tractors produced during these years were among the finiest and best performaing of the world's farm machines.

Production data shows that almost 63,000 of these units were manufactured. How many are still around today is not known. They are very collectible and we would venture to say that more of them are being cared for as a collection piece than in use for everyday farm chores. Parts are still available from select parts dealers. There are also a few specialty dealers who specialize in only the old Olivers. We see these tractors now and again at the local tractor shows - they are indeed a beautiful, stream-lined machine.

Recent shift to AMC enables streamlined logistics services

By Sgt. 1st Class Jeff Troth

jefferey.l.troth.mil@mail.mil

CAMP CASEY, SOUTH KOREA – The logisticians who look after Warrior Country’s transportation, maintenance and supply needs are now able to provide even more robust services thanks to a recent change that gives them broader, faster reach into the Army’s overall logistics network.

The U.S. Army Garrison Red Cloud and Area I’s Directorate of Logistics ran the Central Issue Facility at Camp Hovey and the transportation motor pools that provide buses and vehicle maintenance in Warrior Country.

They did that as part of the U.S. Army Installation Management Command, of which USAG Red Cloud and Area I is a part.

But, effective Oct. 1, all Army DOL assets shifted from IMCOM to the U.S. Army Materiel Command. AMC is a global command that supports Army logistics worldwide.

The shift plugs in the DOL to AMC’s global logistics network.

And in Warrior Country, DOL is now part of the 403rd Army Field Support Brigade Area I, said DOL director Dennis Williams.

For Warrior Country customers, that’ll mean that when one of the 403rd AFSB’s facilities in Warrior Country runs low on an item – helmets or vehicle parts – for example, they can be shipped from another facility that does have them, even one in, say, Japan, Williams said.

The transition will not pose any confusion or inconvenience for DOL customers, he said.

“For Area I it will be transparent,” he said. “The services we did yesterday are the same services that we’ll do today and tomorrow.”

The Area I DOL marked the shift to AMC with a low-key patch-and-pin ceremony Oct. 3 at Camp Casey’s Carey Fitness Center.

There, DOL’s Soldiers traded in their seven-sided IMCOM patch for the shield-shaped AMC patch, while civilians received an AMC lapel pin.

“On behalf of the Army Materiel Command I want to welcome you to the new AMC family,” Col. Michael Lopez, commander of the 403rd AFSB, said during the ceremony.

For the more than 300 DOL Soldiers, Department of the Army Civilians and Korean civilians in Warrior Country, the 403rd AFSB is now their higher headquarters. But, they’re not alone. On Oct. 1, the 403rd also took command and control of all DOLs in Korea, Japan and Okinawa.

The changeover process was set in motion in March 2005 when the leadership of IMCOM and AMC decided to develop a logistics partnership to improve support to the Army and the Army’s transformation plan.

1947 Pontiac Streamliner

Erie Sauder purchased this Streamliner new in 1947. The family used the 4-door Sedan for many years including some vacation trips.

The 1947 Model featured the new body design created following the end of World War II. The last body re-design had been in 1941 before automobile production stopped during World War II to allow those plants to manufacture needed war production. The 1947 Pontiac model had two designations: the streamliner and the torpedo. Although both were very similar, the Streamliner had a slightly longer wheelbase.

The Streamliner came with gray striped cloth upholstery, dual sun visors, automatic dome lights, gigar lighter, ashtrays and an inside hood release. In addition, the 1947 Pontiac had a large variety of options such as Venti-heater, 3 radio choices, turn signals, back-up lights, lighted vanity mirror, electric clock, non-glare rearview mirror, foam rubber seat cushions, bright wheel trim and white-wall tires. This car, with its extensive list of options sold retail for $1645, before options. Pontiac sold 245,419 during the model year.

I was looking at my New York Central streamlined coaches and the original Santa Fe Super Chief cars that inspired them, and realized I could do a better job at the making the roof than what had been available when the Santa Fe cars were designed. I eventually decided to use the 2013 inside tour set (Villy Thomsen Truck - set 4000008) as a starting point, and copied the idea of that model's roof for my NYC coaches. The observation car gave me trouble with this new roof, as I couldn't get it to curve easily, but it eventually was made to behave for the most part... it's not perfect, but it works for me!
