A female Small Skipper butterfly on a grass seed head. Taken during the evening, this butterfly had gone to roost and was, therefore, relatively easy to approach and photograph. Seen at this angle especially, these butterflies look particularly well streamlined. It's easy to see why they fly so well when the sun is shining.

Recent shift to AMC enables streamlined logistics services

CAMP CASEY, SOUTH KOREA – The logisticians who look after Warrior Country’s transportation, maintenance and supply needs are now able to provide even more robust services thanks to a recent change that gives them broader, faster reach into the Army’s overall logistics network.

The U.S. Army Garrison Red Cloud and Area I’s Directorate of Logistics ran the Central Issue Facility at Camp Hovey and the transportation motor pools that provide buses and vehicle maintenance in Warrior Country.

They did that as part of the U.S. Army Installation Management Command, of which USAG Red Cloud and Area I is a part.

But, effective Oct. 1, all Army DOL assets shifted from IMCOM to the U.S. Army Materiel Command. AMC is a global command that supports Army logistics worldwide.

The shift plugs in the DOL to AMC’s global logistics network.

And in Warrior Country, DOL is now part of the 403rd Army Field Support Brigade Area I, said DOL director Dennis Williams.

For Warrior Country customers, that’ll mean that when one of the 403rd AFSB’s facilities in Warrior Country runs low on an item – helmets or vehicle parts – for example, they can be shipped from another facility that does have them, even one in, say, Japan, Williams said.

The transition will not pose any confusion or inconvenience for DOL customers, he said.

“For Area I it will be transparent,” he said. “The services we did yesterday are the same services that we’ll do today and tomorrow.”

The Area I DOL marked the shift to AMC with a low-key patch-and-pin ceremony Oct. 3 at Camp Casey’s Carey Fitness Center.

There, DOL’s Soldiers traded in their seven-sided IMCOM patch for the shield-shaped AMC patch, while civilians received an AMC lapel pin.

“On behalf of the Army Materiel Command I want to welcome you to the new AMC family,” Col. Michael Lopez, commander of the 403rd AFSB, said during the ceremony.

For the more than 300 DOL Soldiers, Department of the Army Civilians and Korean civilians in Warrior Country, the 403rd AFSB is now their higher headquarters. But, they’re not alone. On Oct. 1, the 403rd also took command and control of all DOLs in Korea, Japan and Okinawa.

The changeover process was set in motion in March 2005 when the leadership of IMCOM and AMC decided to develop a logistics partnership to improve support to the Army and the Army’s transformation plan.

This semi streamlined mountain type steam locomotive is part of the last class of steam locomotives ever built in Soviet Union, and one of the best passenger locomotives class ever built, the Победа (victory) class . It was built in 1956 and although withdrawn from regular service in the 1970's, the whole class was kept in working condition as reserve locomotives until the late 1980's and they often hauled train, as "maintaining runs", to make sure they were in proper state.

Virginia & Truckee Railroad McKeen Motor Car No. 22. This unique self-propelled train car was built in 1910 by the McKeen Motor Car Company of Omaha, Nebraska. It had a very sleek, streamlined look for it's day, including a wind resistant front nose. Sold for scrap in 1946, for many years the body was part of a local plumbing store in Carson City. It has recently been restored to its former glory.

Looking quite out of place, the streamlined twin funnels rise majestically above S. Columbus Boulevard, next to the IKEA store in Philadelphia.

After the TD, M.G. "streamlined" the T Series car yet again, giving it a racier swept-back radiator and headlights faired into the front wings (fenders). In this model, the TF still used the 1250cc XPAG engine as used in the TD, with twin carburettors and three main bearings. Later, the TF "1500" would increase the displacement to 1.5 liters, which engine would receive the designation XPEG.

Update: in the "small world" department, I stopped by my local DMV to get tags for my Alfa Spider. While affixing them in the parking lot, a gentleman walked up and started chatting with me about the car; his son had owned several Alfas and he also had an old classic sports car... "a 1955 M.G. TF," he told me. We started chatting about cars, and about the fun he'd been having with it, and something jogged my memory.

"Were you at the Portland Historics?" I asked. "And did you drive on the lunchtime club tour?" Yes to both. "And was your car a kind of brick-red or brownish red?" Yes a third time.

"I took a PICTURE of your car!" Sure enough, this is the fellow we talked to. Lovely car, and a very lovely fellow too.

Iowa Pacific (SLRG) former Nickel Plate Road (NKP) Pullman-built streamlined heavyweight diner-club lounge #125. Built in February 1930 by Pullman in Lot #6308 as a 36 seat coach-18 seat diner, 1 of 2 such cars (#125 and #126) built in that Lot. In 1940, both cars were rebuilt to a diner-club lounge configuration, with the coach section replaced by a 20 seat lounge (1 seat was at a writing desk), and the dining section was slightly moved from off-center (towards the kitchen) to almost dead-center; this allowed for the addition of 4 storage lockers, a crew locker, a conductor's desk and locker, and a refrigerator. Also, the vestibule at the former coach end was closed off, replaced by another locker and small restroom. In 1946-47, both cars were streamlined (#126 in '46, #125 in '47), and the number of dining seats was increased to 24, with the 3 2-seat tables on the kitchen passage side (seen in this photo) replaced by 3 4-seat tables. Following the 1964 NKP-Norfolk & Western Railway (N&W)-Wabash Railroad (WAB) merger, these 2 cars were planned to be renumbered as N&W #1025 and #1026, which may or may not have been applied. The #125 was retired and sold in December 1965 to John W. "Jack" Ferris' Private Railroad Cars, Incorporated, which named it WABASH VALLEY. The #126 is listed as retired in January 1966, but not sold until 1973. It is possible, however unconfirmed at this time, that along with Pullman sleepers GLEN FEE and WOODLAND, that the Oregon, Pacific & Eastern RR (OPE) in Roseburg, OR, acquired the WABASH VALLEY from Ferris. This would appear to be the case, as the #125, along with the 2 Pullmans, was later part of the collection of the Galveston RR Museum. Seen in Iowa Pacific's ex-Denver & Rio Grande Western (D&RGW) yard in Alamosa, CO.

I love the metallic materials uses in rounded corner repetition and the facade without ornamentation - details that make this type of art deco different than the ornate detailed type.

One of my favorite crappy cameras.

The FED-FLASH is a cool streamlined bakelite camera from the 1940s.

Made by Federal Manufacturing and Engineering Corp. in Brooklyn, NY.

I tape it shut if there’s film in it. You can jam a roll of 35mm in there, instead of the 127 film format it was made for. You have to press the shutter release about half an inch before it goes “sproinggggg” and takes the picture. I wouldn’t say it takes good pictures, but some of them have “character.”

A fun-to-use toy camera, it even has a pez holder.
